Looking for past experiences with children having wisdom teeth extracted. Dentist recommended extraction of all 4 teeth for my 16 y/o son. Fairly straight forward...the teeth are coming in straight. Dentist recommended an oral surgeon.
Looks like the total will come to about $500/tooth and $600 for anesthesia (general). Do these costs seem reasonable? Is general anesthesia necessary? I don't recall being put under for either a root canal or wisdom tooth extraction.
Some people never have any problem with their wisdom teeth, but mine were impacted.
Best wishes to your kid.
Before insurance, the cost you mention seems reasonable.
Both my kids had the anesthesia. Tons of pain for about the next week.
Also make sure you have them follow all the recommended procedures for the next week. My niece ended up going back in for surgery due to a pretty bad infection.
I still have mine as well, but I think it is supposed to be more dangerous to have removed once older, so I guess it is a precaution to get it done early
My daughter may need this done and I am a bit worried about them prescribing (and it being bad enough for her to need) opiates.
Or do they get by with the max level ibuprofin or similar ?
Thanks !
I'm pretty sure the recommendation to remove them early is a money thing
As for necessity, it's impossible for anyone here to make that determination without seeing xrays or clinical photos. I will say this, it's much easier getting them out at a young age before other issues arise. It's also much easier to keep the other more important molars clean and healthy with wisdom teeth out of the way.
I'd say my first day was probably worse than most experiences. Felt throbbing pain all day. But my next 3-to-5 days was probably better than most experiences. I recovered as far as pain goes very, very quickly. Was basically fine after 1 night's sleep.
Best of luck.
Worst part was when my dad rented Bill Cosby Himself that day. Remember this was 1987, I had never seen it and wanted to watch it. I had my dad shut it off after 5mins because I was laughing so hard and started bleeding again.
I was fine after about 3-4 days.
Anyway, why are you doing it just because one doctor recommended it? Dude, doctors always recommend whatever procedure they can justify at the ti.e to get their daughter's tuition paid, or that new deck built....
What metro area do you live in? Look up the TOP rated professionals in your area and ask for a second opinion.
I was told I needed to schedule an emergency surgery TOMORROW to get ALL 4 of my wisdom teeth probably around 18 to 21 years ago. Pretty much the halfway point between my birth and now. No problems with any of the teeth I,"had to have out that minute!!!!!🤢🤕😷!!!, or else I would die on the spot"!
Since then, like an idiot, I allowed a dentist to pull one of my wisdom teeth for no reason, and have regretted it ever since! It reduced how quickly I can complete mastercating a meal 😕. Worst of all, I never even went to the doctor about my wisdom teeth.... I was worried about one of my front teeth after just going through my first time ever being mugged/assaulted. Thank god they did not get my wallet that i should have had in my pocket to begin with, but who ever punched me from behind sent my designer corrective eye wear to the abiss, where i never found them again, and rocked my front toot straight out the socket (Was able to slip back into proper place.)
Long story short, dude, always get second opinions, especially for those you love. The pros do not care about you. Sometimes you are no more than a potential dollar sign. It is an unfortunate side effect of our very poorly unstructured healthcare system.
My good friend is a dentist, he wouldn't recommend it unless a patient needed it. Can't speak to the ethics of all dentists but there are medical professionals out there who give a shit, in fact I think most do.
