NFT: Baton Rouge, LA recommandations

NYG27 : 7/25/2017 12:00 pm
I just found out that I'll be on a work assignment in Baton Rouge at the end of August that will last a few months. Never been anywhere near that area and was looking for recommendations.

I'll be working 50-60 hours Monday to Friday but will have the weekends free. What are some cool places to check out in either Baton Rouge area? Anyone know of some good restaurant recommendations?

I also just saw that New Orleans is an hour and a half drive and Houston is a 4 hour drive, so I might take some weekend trips to either location once in a while but mostly will be in Baton Rouge majority of the time.

Stay at either the Hampton Inn or Hilton right down by the

state capital. The Hampton Inn might have a balcony overlooking the Mississippi which is pretty cool.

There's a little section of bars, clubs, restaurants right down town that is pretty fun.

If you're in town at the beginning of September, it's worth checking out an LSU game at Tiger Stadium. And of course, getting down to the college bars and whatnot can be fun.

New Orleans is literally 50 miles away and is totally worth the trip if you've never been. I'd recommend staying over and enjoying the food, drink and culture.
Thanks B for those recommendations

I was looking that that Hampton Inn in downtown with views of the Mississippi and looking to rack up Hilton Honor points for those 6 months to use on a family vacation next year.

Great ideal to check out a LSU game, I'll be in area for the majority of their season and home game vs Syracuse in September sounds interesting. Never gone to a college football game before, so it'll be interesting to experience that.

Never been to New Orleans before but will definitely make a few weekend trips there.

If you're there for a couple of months in the fall, you gotta go to Death Valley & catch a LSU game.

Also, go to NOLA. Just go.

Houston...meh. I'm not a big fan. If you want to visit a city in TX, just tack on 2 plus hours & go to Austin. Austin's a helluva lot more fun.

Both Dallas and Austin are about 6 hours from Baton Rouge and I'll likely visit both locations once but since Houston is a shorter 4 hour drive, I might visit there more.

Although majority of my time there, I will most likely spend time in Baton Rouge area and looking for things to do there.
If it's a few months,

I wouldn't waste my time and money on the touristy stuff...you're sure to meet and get to know the locals. South of BR from Plaquemine to Houma is alot of back water stuff. Going west to Breaux Bridge/Lafayette is more of the same. And further west is Lake Charles then the Horse track just before the Texas border, by that time the thorobreds will be in action. And the casinos are also in that area.

an LSU game. There is nothing like Death Valley on a Saturday Night. What an incredible college football experience. If they have a home game, and it isn't the SEC game of the week, it'll be a night game (around a 6:30pm start).

Also, while you're there, it's a very easy drive to NOLA and there are some tremendous food spots to check out there.

It's like nothing else in sports. Nothing I've ever seen, anyway. The only event I've ever been to that was louder was a monster truck show.
I'd go to New Orleans twice rather than drive 4 hours to Houston.

Also consider exploring the bayou area south of New Orleans. It's like another world there.
Just looking @ the Tigers home schedule...

LSU vs. Auburn on 10/14 would be a good game to catch.
Thanks for all the advice

Looks like I'll be there for 6 months on a work assignment. So should have plenty of time to go exploring.

Stay at the Royal Sonesta. It's right on Bourbon Street. Also go to Café du Monde for beignets and coffee. Great city with lots to do
I think there is a K-Paul's Kitchen in Baton Rouge

I've only eaten at the one in New Orleans, but there is a sister restaurant in Baton Rouge. The restaurant was run by famous chef Paul Prudhomme before his untimely death a little over a year ago. Food is ridiculously good
Did my Grad work at LSU

If you're going to be in Baton Rouge during an LSU game, you either go, or you are stuck. They shut down roads leading out of Baton Rouge near campus before the game and all roads lead out after. But definitely go to a game. It's a great experience. And the campus is very beautiful.

The most famous college bar/restaurant is The Chimes. They have decent food and a good beer selection. Worth going to and very close to campus.

Other restaurants that I used to like, but that don't really do cajun was The Little Village and Bistro Byronz. I miss it from time to time, but ultimately I was glad to leave. It's a smallish city and is utterly dead when school is not in session, but I met some wonderful people there.

Halfway decent Italian food. Their bread is really good.

And if you stay at the Hampton Inn, they deliver.
