NFT: So, I'm coming off my anxiety meds

GMAN4LIFE : 7/25/2017 1:02 pm
Its well known here that I had my fight with anxiety over 3 years ago. Well this past January , I made the decision to lower my dose to begin the process of coming off. Started with 20 and went down to 10 mg for 3 months. Now been on 5mg since april. Now my doctor has me taking the 5mg pill once every other day.

I know the withdrawals and the side effects are different for everyone. Also my doctor is monitoring my progress.

What I’m asking is a general question. What worked for you all when you came off of the meds? Maybe supplements or activities.
I took celexa

for 2 years after a lot of tragic events in my personal life. Went off them about a year ago and trying to be healthy overall was what really got me through it. Working out, eating right, being active, spending as little time as possible sitting around and stewing is what got me through that initial "withdrawal" Good luck to you man it's not easy but it's worth it to live un-medicated.
Meditation and exercise are excellent.

Maintain a routine that includes good diet, exercise and sunshine
Torrag : 7/25/2017 1:18 pm : link
Seriously don't underestimate good ole sunshine in your life. Incorporate some breathing and meditation exercises. Good luck you'll do fine and won't miss the pharma soon enough. Take care.
Get outside. Get movement.

We are animals, and as such rely on endorphins to keep us calm. Get a decent pair of supportive shoes and get walking, if anything more strenuous hasn't been done in awhile. Don't over do it. Have a goal for the future. Reward yourself.

Sitting down for extended amounts of time and hunching is bad for posture and illicit a cortisol response.

Good luck!

If it's a Benzo like xanax it's brutal
DennyInDenville : 7/25/2017 1:49 pm : link
But sounds like your on a lighter benzo like Valium. You seem to be doing very well so far and are at the final stages of withdrawal.

Seems like your in good shape man. Best of luck.

I've been going thru hell cutting my prescription xanax dose down even just a little bit.
the med is ecitalophram... the generic version of celexa

Just afraid of the unknown when it comes with withdrawals.

GMAN - sounds like Lexapro.

(Celexa is probably more or less the same thing, though)

Anyway - congrats! It's a good step forward. No one wants to take meds their entire lives for this, so if you feel you're in a place now where you can move forward without it - great!

My best advice is to just stay active, do things you enjoy, and don't put unfair expectations on yourself.

Anxiety is a normal part of living - those without disorders still experience anxiety from time to time. So it's important to remember that your goal shouldn't be to never feel anxious again because it's simply not realistic.

Don't get discouraged if you have a rough day here or there. It's part of the process. It's how you respond that matters most.

When you feel yourself tensing up or feeling anxious, just loosen your body up and use the 4, 7, 8 breathing method. When you feel relaxed physically, you're much more likely to feel relaxed mentally. When we get anxious, we tend to tense up. We clench our muscles, fidget around, pace, grind our teeth, etc. Just let all of your limbs loose and breathe.

The more you try to "fight" anxiety, the more you fuel it.

The key is always to swim with the current rather than against it. You'll find you have a much easier time.

Best of luck.

Also - as far as withdrawal symptoms. Given the way you've very gradually weened yourself off, I'd expect very, very minor effects (if any at all)

It's unlikely that you'll have much of a withdrawal period. I wouldn't worry about it.
Massage
jpennyva : 7/25/2017 2:44 pm : link
There are SO many benefits to massage, including to help manage stress and reduce anxiety. My husband is a massage therapist and I was a proponent of massage therapy for overall increased well being even before I met him. Rates differ in different geographical areas of course but you may be able to find discounts in a variety of places, such as with Groupon or Living Social. A lot of places offer discounts for new customers as well. One of the things I love about massage is that, most times, during a massage, I am simply incapable of thinking about anything and it is wonderful!

Good luck!
Wishing you the best

I find that if I do not get enough sleep, it really throws me off and increases my anxiety. I'll reiterate what many have said, healthy diet, exercise and meditate.

I've done it before
DomerGiant2008 : 7/25/2017 2:59 pm : link
going straight cold turkey off of fairly high dose of Prozac i'd been taking for a while ... felt like dog shit for about 2 weeks ... disoriented, lethargic, head rushes (this is why you are supposed to taper off). But after that I was fine.

But anyways - you did it the right way so you shouldn't have too many side effects. Try to be active. Go outside. Worst thing you can do is just sit around and dwell.

But if you start feeling the anxiety creep back into your life - don't be afraid to try a different medication. I didn't like the side effects of Prozac (dick didn't work), so eventually i switched to Zoloft and i've had almost no side effects.

As someone who has battled anxiety my entire life, it's a bitch and props to you for not being ashamed of talking about it. I waa for a while.
These are the kind of threads that remind you

That all is not lost here. A lot of the battle of beating down the crazy is knowing the crazy is there in the first place. Some days are better than others.
thanks peeps

one day at a time but i feel that i (and my doc)made the progress to come off the meds.

and to anyone else in the same boat, you can do it as well. You too can fight this thing and i know you can do it. Why? because i did it. You are strong and capable of fighting it and getting back to a normal life. Just work at it.
I'm on a 20mg prescription for anxiety now
