Dave Diehl: "Rhett Ellison the Best Blocking TE in the NFL."

BigBlueWhale : 8/6/2017 12:01 pm
Said it matter-of-factly with Paul Dottino on their 8/3 spot. Now, once a Giant always a Giant. I understand and love it. But is Diehl correct here? Ellison is obviously a good blocker but I had no idea he was considered the creme de la creme of the entire league. Could explain why the Giants gave him $18M over 4 years?

My ears also perked up listening to Bobby Hart's recent interview. One of my big concerns about last year's offense was McAdoo running the same inside hand-offs over and over again. I could believe we didn't run behind Flowers more.
Turns out, according to Hart, this was by design (a huge relief) due to subpar TE blocking. Quite frankly outside zones were suicide so we stuck to inside. Predicatable, but still better than the alternative.

It all adds up to an O that should look nothing like last year's. Not only with the added personnel groupings but the ability to run both inside and out. Perhaps a swing in performance that startles the outside world. On top of everything else we could have an annoying run game to play against.
Love Diehl,

but the BEST? That's a pretty tall order
Rhett Ellison is a pretty damn good blocker
gidiefor : Mod : 8/6/2017 12:18 pm : link
and has very smooth hands -- he's going to play a big role in the offense this year. A lot of you are going to be singing his praises.
Think Martellus Bennett plus hands wise -- but a lot savvier and less wacky -- and a much better and more disciplined and willing blocker

There are no wasted movements with this guy -- he's a surgeon

I still remember the days of Mark Bavaro single-handily taking out Dexter Manley or Charles Mann.
Diehl is certainly not lacking for enthusiasm for his old team
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/6/2017 12:24 pm : link
I'd take what he says with a pinch of salt.

Though given the state of TE blocking around the league, it's possible.
Well, the Giants paid him a lot of $$
ZogZerg : 8/6/2017 12:34 pm : link
and it wasn't from his flashy receiving skills.

I would imaging he is right up their with the top blocking TEs in the league.
So He's Not the Best
Samiam : 8/6/2017 12:47 pm : link
Are people going to quibble if he's one of the best,; would a top 3 or 5 blocking TE be a problem? We had horrible blocking from that position over the past few years. He's a huuuuuuge upgrade
Ellison is a huge addition to this team...
trueblueinpw : 8/6/2017 12:56 pm : link
TE was probably our weakest position on the entire team last year. Tye's a nice guy to have behind Ellison and Engram but he's a not a great starter. With our 1st round pick and our highest paid UFA (right?) being TE, it's clear the Giants thought this was a huge need. I can't wait to see some two TE sets with these guys b/c Engram can fly down the seam, he can shift into slot or out wide and run any route with Ellison's ability to block Eli can audible run or pass.
Let's just hope he stays healthy.

A torn patellar tendon is tough to fully come back from.
"best" does not mean most dominant
Vanzetti : 8/6/2017 2:22 pm : link
given his size, Ellison obviously is not going to dominate a guy like a TE who outweighs him by 20-30 lbs.

I think Diehl meant best overall, looking at all the blocks a TE has to make, moving laterally and blitz pick up, as well as taking on guys in the hole

Plenty of guys bigger than ellison that aren't as good at blocking...
It's kind of a silly question really
LakeGeorgeGiant : 8/6/2017 2:54 pm : link
Is here best, who's to say?

He is certainly a very good blocker.
That's all well and good, but that
barens : 8/6/2017 4:27 pm : link
Didn't help Bradford much last season. Still need guys up front who can give Eli some time.

Bavaro, who was one of the best, only weighed 245. Blocking is a stay of mind. You either want to d it or you don't.
Dave Meggett was a great blocker and was a small RB.

Your'e on BBI. Stay of mind was correct.

Btw, leave it to the Giants to go a little overboard in adding TE's just as a couple of the young guys are showing promise. Perhaps there should have been another LT in there somewhere. Too bad that trades for quality players are so rare in the NFL. I know that the reports on Flowers look a little better, but we still really need another hedge at OT.

Is that similar to stay of execution?
Rhett

is 250. Outweighed by 20 or 30 pounds? How many 280lb TE in the NFL?
Maybe the Best Blocking TE ever

Let's fire Reese, he brought in a terrific blocker at a position of great need just as Tye was preparing for the Pro bowl.
If he stays healthy
Bluesbreaker : 8/6/2017 7:41 pm : link
he will make a big difference in both the run and pass we
have the weapons to attack anywhere on the field give
Eli that extra second or two and the deeps passes will
be there .
Blocking Tight Ends
Scott in Seattle : 8/6/2017 10:45 pm : link
He didn't catch much, but Howard Cross may have been the best blocking tight end I've seen put on a Giants uniform.
If Howard Cross says it.....
NNJ Tom : 8/7/2017 10:28 am : link
then maybe I'll care.
I would be thrilled
Jay on the Island : 8/7/2017 12:39 pm : link
if Ellison is as good as Dan Campbell was in 2002.
Maain concern with Ellison is his durability...
Torrag : 8/7/2017 12:42 pm : link
...he's missed playing time to injuries that either flat out cost him games or limited his availability. Gotta stay healthy.
Even if he's a top 10 blocking TE
Mike in Long Beach : 8/7/2017 12:46 pm : link
It's a massive upgrade for an offense that, as a whole, couldn't block for shit last year.
It's funny and off topic,
Big Blue '56 : 8/7/2017 12:55 pm : link
not many people recall that Cross had 4 receptions in SB XXV
Even Zeke Mowatt
Bluesbreaker : 8/9/2017 3:14 pm : link
was a very good blocker HC was a load of a blocker and
I think he may have been the best Giants TE as a blocker
ever . No slight on Bavaro he was a beast in all phases .
Can he block as well as
mrvax : 8/9/2017 3:19 pm : link
Old Stone Hands (Howard Cross)?
He's an excellent blocker
annexOPR : 8/9/2017 3:38 pm : link
that can line up all over the formation and will look like an extra OL compared to what we had to see from TEs last year
