Rock: At 6-8, Giants’ Devin Taylor brings new height, depth

FYI...
At 6-8, Giants’ Devin Taylor brings new height, depth at defensive end - ( New Window )
Taylor, Okwara, Moore
annexOPR : 8/7/2017 11:03 am : link
i love the DE depth this year ... should make OV/JPP even more effective
How about we bring him in on 3rd down to spy QB....
Crispino : 8/7/2017 11:27 am : link
along the line and swat down passes. Then he can do the Mutuombo finger wave after each block.
5 DEs are pretty much certain and 6 is possible
BillT : 8/7/2017 11:28 am : link
JPP, OV, Okwara, Ross and Wynn. I guess Taylor could beat out Wynn but I don't see it. Taylor and OO for the 6th spot if there is one.

PaulN : 8/7/2017 11:47 am : link
Into the equation that we get a healthy JPP that I think will be back to being dominant and sky is the limit for this crew.
Don't forget about Avery Moss.....
Simms11 : 8/7/2017 12:28 pm : link
he could help in pass rush situations this year.
Really hoping we see 2 guys
gmen9892 : 8/7/2017 12:39 pm : link
Emerge from the group of Moss, OO (not likely), Okwara, Taylor as a pass rusher. That and the 4th CB spot are the biggest question marks on defense right now and it would make this defense even better to have a pass rush specialist on the 2nd team defense.
I really don't know how they are going to fit all these guys
allstarjim : 8/7/2017 1:21 pm : link
Unless you carry only 3 true DT's.

I'm guessing that Vernon, JPP, Okwara, and Moss are virtual locks. If you assume there's room for only one more DE, then it's either Taylor or Wynn. That's a tough call. I'd lean Wynn. If you keep 6, then you have to cut a group somewhere else. Let's assume 25 players on defense.

I'll give you the 6 DE's above.

So then you have 19 left for (my projected cuts in italics):

Safeties: Collins, D. Thompson, Adams (locks) and two more out of Berhe, Pinkins, Ihenacho, Murphy, Robinson.

Corners: Jenkins, DRC, Apple (locks), and three more of Hunter, M. Thompson, Blake Deayon, Amos, Tribune

Linebackers (have to go with only 5 here): Casillas, Goodson, Kennard, Herzlich (locks), 1 more out of Robinson, J.T. Thomas, Skinner, Grant, Munson, Maponga.

That leaves only 3 for DTs: Harrison, Tomlinson (locks) with one spot left for Robert Thomas, Bromley, Bryant, and Banks.

If you say we must have 4 DTs, which I don't think we really need because of the versatility of our DE's being able to move inside, then I would assume Bromley makes it, and then you perhaps carry only 5 corners cutting either M. Thompson or Valentino Blake. Or you keep 6 corners and go with only 4 safeties, cutting Berhe or Pinkins (I like Pinkins to make the team in that scenario).

It should be noted in the above scenario with 6 DE's that Odighizuwa is an obvious cut, along with Jordan Williams and Evan Schwan.
I don't think there is no way they keep only 3 DTs.
fredgbrown : 8/7/2017 1:32 pm : link
You get 1 injury and you now have no backups to spell the starters. You can move DE inside on long distance downs but I wouldn't want a DE in there on run downs especially against Dallas.
Can't keep 6 defensive ends
Marty866b : 8/7/2017 1:50 pm : link
You have to have at least 4 defensive tackles. I think we have to keep the better pass rushers over the better run defenders. Wynn is a mediocre player who plays hard and is good against the run but unless he has improved his pass rush I hope we now have better talent then him to replace him.
Whatever Taylor brings,
81_Great_Dane : 8/7/2017 1:53 pm : link
he's not assured of a roster spot.
I agree with you guys
allstarjim : 8/7/2017 2:06 pm : link
And because of that I would guess Wynn and Taylor are fighting for one spot on this team.
*Moss - not Moore
annexOPR : 8/7/2017 2:33 pm : link
oops.

Re: Taylor, he excelled in 2015 as a reserve with 7 sacks before struggling as a full time starter ... I think he'll end up being a solid rotational piece - and push OO off the roster unless he dominates in camp
Boy I understand the pick of Webb
grizz299 : 8/7/2017 2:38 pm : link
but right now that means a very good player is going to be cut.
Is there anyway, Webb can be put on injured reserve, hold on to the guy but get his roster spot?
In addition to being 6-7 or 8, he has 36 inch arms.

.
25 on defense
BillT : 8/7/2017 3:22 pm : link
6 de, 4 dt, 6 lb, 4 s, 5 cb. That's certainly possible.
Yeah ----his size in enticing
gidiefor : Mod : 8/7/2017 3:31 pm : link
but he hasn't really shown up very well so far in camp --

we'll see what he's got during preseason games

I hate to keep going back to my "money talks, bullshit walks" mantra, but just think of how bad he had to be last year for his best offer to be the absolute minimum and for him to sign that deal with a team already stacked at the DE position.

Did no other team offer him the minimum one year deal? Why choose the Giants over a team like Dallas if both teams were offering him the same minimum deal? Dallas has nothing but question marks at the position and even the question marks are suspended to start the year. Of all the teams that play a 4-3 defense, he couldn't've picked a place with a steeper hill to climb if a roster spot and playing time are his goals.

It just doesn't make sense. Unless he sucks. Then it starts to make more sense. Then you can begin to see why the Giants may have been one of the only teams to make him the minimum offer. The Giants are set at the starting position, but behind them they have a 5th round pick, a 22-year old 2nd year man, and a veteran career-backup that's a little on the pricey side ($1.8M) for a backup, so it makes sense to add a former starter with years of experience who can be cut at no cost at the end of camp and will only cost the minimum if he makes his way up the depth chart via injury. At least you can depend on him not to make rookie mistakes.

I just don't understand why the Cowboys wouldn't be offering him the same minimum risk-free contract and if they had, why wouldn't he accept that offer over the one he received by the Giants? And I'm sure there are several other teams that would offer him a better shot at playing time if they offered him a contract at all (so the same questions apply).
We will most likely have to keep
SomeFan : 8/8/2017 8:55 am : link
3 QBs this year which is unfortunate when we are having trounle deciding who to cut.
I think we're better off with 4 DTs and 5 DEs
