Eric Pinkins

Andy in Boston : 8/8/2017 11:06 am
I like what I've read on this kid.

I know he's listed as a safety, but does anyone know (people that have been at camp) if he gets looks as a cover LB? Seems like he could be a good hybrid safety/LB type. Has the speed to cover back and tight ends. I would think that would be his best chance to make the roster....as a backup to Casillas, etc. Thoughts?

think he's got an excellent chance to make the team as a hybrid LB/S who can cover. A lack of coverage LBs has killed us for years. Anyone who can fill that role has a good chance of sticking.

Eric Pinkins, whom we talked to after practice, is a physical gem. Tall, long, strong, and fast. He is high hipped and struggles to make quick breaks and change direction laterally, but I think this kid has to make the team. He may be one of the more versatile defenders on the team. Experience at S, LB, and CB in addition to a defensive weapon on special teams. He is pumped to start his endeavor to make the roster Friday night. Look for him.

If Pinkins Can Make it as the 6th Linebacker,
OntheRoad : 8/8/2017 11:11 am : link
he can also be the 5th safety and 6th corner. That might save a roster spot.

You have to be a little intrigued by the combination of CB and LB.
If he can shine on special teams, then he has an excellent shot

He can play all over the field

He can Blitz as well. We are fortunate he can produce anywhere on the field defensively. I say he could be the 3rd Safety behind Collins and Thompson. If Thompson is not ready he could be a Starter, along with Collins.

He played with Kam in Seattle, it would be great if he could take on the role of destroyer as Kam does for the Seahawks.
So... Pinkins over
ZGiants98 : 8/8/2017 11:17 am : link
JT Thomas then?
I am sure Spags has
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/8/2017 11:19 am : link
room for a Rover type Safety. His defense would excel with the ability to deploy 1 when needed.

I think we need them both.
Thomas, Robinson, Kennard, Goodson and Casillas are our 5 best LB's.(in no specific order). Pinkins probably 6th....I don't think we keep 6...unless Herzlich scrapes by, but I think his days are numbered. That's why I like Pinkins as a LB/S hybrid.
If Sy's assessments are on the mark or even close,

I don't see how he doesn't make it..I try not to assume anything, but a guy that versatile should have no problem on STs, imv

.

They don't need Thomas when the season starts, if he wasn't
on IR to end the season, I think he would have been gone.
Now, Robinson is in concussion protocol, they need him for the time being.
Interesting toolset. Could be a nice addition if he excels on specials

Before we get too excited, keep in mind that Pinkins wasn't even the standout of the SDSU secondary. He was overshadowed by our own Nat Berhe.

If there's an NFL team qualified to identify the next Kam Chancellor, it should be Seattle. They moved Pinkins all over the defense in two+ seasons, and never found a position for him. I'll be rooting hard for him in pre-season - I love versatility at the bottom of the roster. For now, though, he's just a project that looks great in shorts.

if he is anything close to Chancellor ... this defense will go down as 1 of the best in NFL history. Pinkins is near the top of my watch list this weekend.
Seahawks let him go
Rudy5757 : 8/8/2017 12:20 pm : link
so I have some Questions about him. From Sy it sounds like he is a beast. Something to keep an eye on. Rooting for him to make the team because of his versatility but a little cautious because he has been cut by the Seahawks and didnt get much time while playing with the Giants last year.
To all those saying
gmen9892 : 8/8/2017 1:27 pm : link
He was cut by the Seahawks, and that is a bad thing, why? They have a loaded LB and S corps, which seems to be where Pinkins excels. They have lost their DC in Quinn, and dont seem to be AS dominant because of that. Who knows if they keep him if Quinn was still there, and who knows how good their current DC is.

Could it be that the Seahawks simply misplayed the guy or couldnt find a spot in their loaded LB or S corps to fit him in?
Hmmmmm.....

Pinkins or Herz?

I think it's no contest....
Herz..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/8/2017 1:34 pm : link
should be considered a LB about as much as DeOssie should be, so why do so many people fuck that concept up?
He has 2 things going for him
Biteymax22 : 8/8/2017 2:04 pm : link
First is that he is supposed to be a beast on special teams. When it comes to depth players this is essential.

Second is the trend of the hybrid linebacker/safety position starting to become prevalent in the NFL, like Deion Jones or Deone Buchanon.

His versatility allows him to sneak in at either an extra LB spot or S spot, but his special teams play will dictate whether that happens.
I understand the infactuation with Pinkins
gidiefor : Mod : 8/8/2017 2:05 pm : link
But i want to caution you. While he does have power and speed, he has a fatal flaw. His hips don't move the way you want a safety's hips to move.
...
Eric from BBI : Admin : 8/8/2017 2:07 pm : link
He's clearly a hybrid and Spags will use him similar to Landon Collins if he makes the team.

What I like about him (which I didn't know before Sy's interview with him) is he sounds like a smart guy.

OK - bad hips.

But the question on everyone's mind is - how are his thumbs? Need to see those puppies during game time ;)
