RIP Coach MacPherson

B in ALB : 8/8/2017 3:54 pm
Today is a very sad day in the Syracuse University community as Coach Mac has passed away at the age of 86. He had some great success at SU including beating the #1 Nebraska juggernaut and leading the Cuse to an undefeated season. After coaching he used to come to practice and talk to the team with his grandkids in tow. I would give the kids a couple bottles of Poweraid on our way to the locker room - they ended up playing for Cuse as well. Coach was a fun listen at practice and later on the radio. A total homer and die hard Orangeman. RIP Coach.
RIP coach

As an SU fan growing up, I will remember him fondly.
RIP.

I really enjoyed watching his McPherson-era teams... wishbone formations, yet still throwing the rock.
B what Cuse teams did you play for

ball boy'd the 2002 3-OT game against Va Tech. Did you play for Coach P? Seemed like a good dude in my limited interactions
P is a great guy

and fun to listen to on the radio. '87 - '01 were good times for 'Cuse Football. Had season tickets from '85-'96. Still get to a few games each year. I hope they get around to the renovation sooner rather than later.

Coach P was in a bad spot. The "fans" had turned on him. I said if they get rid of him they better bring in a real name coach. They brought in Greg Robinson! The downward spiral began... Hopefully Dino can turn it around and stay long enough to leave a decent program in place

RIP Coach Mac

My fear is that Babers brand of football isn't sustainable in the ACC. The big, physical teams murder the smaller skill guys loaded in Babers system. The Clemson game last year is a prime example. It becomes dangerous after a while. That flight home was a medical flight.

Back in the day, we were big, fast and physical as hell. I remember in 96, Army came into the Dome with the longest winning streak in the country. They were confident, cocky, and talked so much shit pregame and in the first half. We absolutely demolished them and demoralized them. Physically. We made it a point to beat them up. The VaTech game that year, Houston, Clemson the year before, Wisconsin in 97, etc all stand out as physically dominant performances against good teams.

This current team won't do that often - VT being the exception last year. You can get away with this brand of football in the Mac. Not so much in a Power 5. That's my fear.
To this day

when I think about Syracuse football, I think Coach Mac.

It wasn't the same after he left.

And that Nebraska team wasn't just #1...they were beating teams like 62-7 on a regular basis.

I was such a coward that day. I didn't want to see Syracuse get crushed so I did something else. When someone told me the Orange had pulled of the upset, I thought they were lying to me.

I was a Freshman at SU that year, and after they lost to Rutgers the week prior, we were convinced they were going to get killed vs. Nebraska. That team/game was amazing to attend, no less sit in the 5th row (albeit on the 10 yard line).

Coach Mac was among the nicest people I've ever met. He spoke to every student who introduced themselves as if he knew us, and was interested in us.

Good man...Great coach...Great advocate for SU.
Coach was indeed a really nice guy

But he could lay the wood too. He'd rip you a new ass if it was warranted. The funeral and visits will be crazy. He was a universally loved man in Syracuse.
Good article

terrible loss. I am an SU alum. Coach Mac was all about the university. A great coach, and an even better person. RIP. God bless.
It's really sad

I still can't believe it. He was an institution. And he was such a nice man. Genuine and always approachable. I'd see him in Grimaldis from time to time and he'd always say hello to my mom and dad. Such a loss for us Orangemen.
Awesome finish
