Patriots buy 767s for travel

B in ALB : 8/8/2017 4:54 pm
I have to admit. This thing is pretty damned sweet. The tail is awesome.

You just know Jerrah is on the horn trying to buy a couple 747s or a fuckin spaceship or something.

Just ordered a couple of these badboys for their trips.

Be cool to see inside

I have no concept what it's like for football teams to fly.

I am just over 6' and I know comparing an NFL team travel to coach seats on my flights is silly, but I can barely fit in most airplane seats, even the extended space seats.

So what does it look like inside an NFL plane, especially one custom made like this, to fit like 60+ extremely large men and keep them comfortable?

For what, 15 round trips per season?
Deej : 8/8/2017 5:18 pm : link
Seems wasteful unless they're going to lease them out on the side.
Soon to be seen over the practice facilities....

with all first class seats according to that article. there will definitely be some copycats as that is a great perk to attract and retain players.
surprised to hear
jestersdead : 8/8/2017 5:35 pm : link
no other team has done this already. Why wouldn't you want to customize a plane for all the needs a top tier team needs.

How much money do they spend on charter flights?

An entity associated with the Pats likely bought the assets and will
regulator : 8/8/2017 6:48 pm : link
lease them back to an existing 767 charter operator (no way Pats will actually operate in-house) and open the airplanes up to other charter operations in the off-season and for home games.

It's an interesting play and great for marketing. The airplanes themselves are 26-year-old ex-American Airlines 767-300ERs and will likely be fitted out with a club-style interior, but nothing too extravagant as NFL charters still move a lot of people.
I mean... is this really cool?
ZGiants98 : 8/8/2017 7:05 pm : link
Which team doesn't have a charter plane? So the story is that it's a 767 instead of maybe a 757? SWEET! Go Pats! More luggage room.
Never mind...
ZGiants98 : 8/8/2017 7:06 pm : link
Most teams "charter planes", not own them. Mis-read the article.

Nothing like private air travel
trueblueinpw : 8/8/2017 8:18 pm : link
I was lucky enough to fly on the MSG plane that the Knicks and Rangers use. It was a seriously fun trip! Aside from all the comfort in the air, we left from a private air terminal at NWK. Great way to fly.

Like some others have mentioned, I'm surprised no one else has thought of this sooner. Probably give a bit of an edge to the team flying cross country and even recruiting UFAs.
this is the only way to fly

I don't know if they owned it
bhill410 : 8/9/2017 7:47 am : link
But the jets used to have a plane (not sure model) with their logo on it that you could see from turnpike at Newark airport. Once again not sure if it was a marketing deal or they owned the sucker
Dodgers (baseball) had a plane about 20 years ago

Even with all their travel, it was ultimately determined not to be economical.

Leasing is the answer for such limited use.

Now, if it had a Mets logo slapped onto it, Baghdad Z would be talking about it as if it were a chariot send down by Zeus himself.
No doubt about that
B in ALB : 8/9/2017 1:18 pm : link
It'd be the most glorious airplane to ever grace the friendly skies and the Mets are genius for having their very own charter - another championship move.
I had read this elsewhere and I believe the pair cost $10m
glowrider : 8/9/2017 5:05 pm : link
And will be leased out when not used. I believe they have been spending around $4m annually on charters, so maybe it is sensible.

Plus, the toilets are designed to measure the players' health. No shit.

I don't know enough about planes, but could the atmosphere inside be tweaked as well to promote recovery and reduce jet lag?

They only have two games this season west of the Mississippi.

I don't know if they owned their own planes, but I remember SI doing a story on the way they traveled and how much more lavish and comfortable it was than any other team in the league.
Wait a second....
