Goodson versus play-action in the preseason...

Milton : 8/9/2017 4:28 am
I'm not sure how much play-action Goodson will be seeing in the preseason, but that's something to follow, because I know that if I'm calling the plays against the Giants defense, that's the first place I'd go looking for as far as a weak link is concerned.

When everyone is healthy, the strength of the Giants defense is their nickel package (and the strength of the Giants base defense is their run defense). And given that Goodson's strength appears to be downhill versus the run, offenses are probably going to test him in pass coverage a lot on first down when they have the Giants in their base defense. That's what I would do. Make him prove he won't bite on play-action, make him prove he can shadow running backs or tight ends crossing through his zone.

More than the new starter at DT, it will be the new starter at MLB that offenses will first look to exploit. And it will be through the air.

A point, I really think it comes down to down and distance. 3rd and 4-6 might open that up, but this is assuming that Goodson is playing as a Nickel LB in that scenario. Casillas covers well as a LB and Robinson is our best cover LB. Plus Collins and his ability to diagnose plays really takes a ton of the burden off of a Mike LB who might be on the field in that scenario.

You raise a valid concern, but the Giants have a nice set of supporting pieces to offset any deficiencies Goodson might have in coverage. Lets just hope that we have the talent on the line that is being speculated and that the pass rush is so good that all he has to do is knock the shit out of the RB/TE as soon as he catches it.

I'm assuming Goodson comes off the field in the nickel (and the back seven is Casillas and Robinson at LB, Collins and Thompson at safety, and Jenkins, Apple, and DRC at corner). So the time to exploit any deficiencies in Goodson's game will be when the base defense is on the field, which is mainly first down and sometimes second down. And since the strength of the base defense is its run defense, which is also Goodson's likely strength, the best way to attack that defense is via the short pass.

If everyone is healthy, the Giants will be very hard to throw against on second and long and third and long. And with Snacks on the field on 1st down and manageable 2nd downs, they will be tough to run against. Throwing on 1st down gives an offense its highest probability of success against the Giants defense. I think the Giants will see a lot of that this year. That will be Goodson's greatest test.

I would go a bit further:

There's been a lot of positive camp ink spent on Goodson--we all hope it plays out. But for a guy who saw action in 2016 few plays from scrimmage, there is a lot of uncertainty playing down hill, let alone on pass d/play action. Further, the strength of the Giants' d was their run defense in 2016. Until further notice, we can't be sure than JB/Thomas is going to be as stout as Hank, as DT (the Dalvin one) seems to be progressing at a modest pace.
Exactly..good post...

I think your right about coverage ability but good luck
with the dink and dunk because this defense is gonna
punish people . I am excited to see Thompson I expect some
hickups here and there but if he can be the ball hawk we
have needed in the back end 20 points by the offense will
win quite a few games but I also expect the offense to
flourish this year . I think were loaded for bear I do
wonder about the kicker many crucial games come down to the
last second FG

But again, its rare that the Mike will have a serious coverage responsibility on first or second down. Generally, Goodson will have a curl responsibility and will only need to cover a section of the field
