This is the first step if they want to IR him, right?

He has to clear waivers first?
That's somewhat disappointing. I was hoping we hit on a good one

Could see him on practice squad when

Too conspiracy theory?

nope -- speculation from the beats is that if he clears waivers -which is likely - he will be placed on IR

year on IR. Of course, my understanding is that they could waive him from IR after he's healed. But many people were surprised he wasn't drafted. Right now, they need bodies. And teams have little patience for rookie UDFAs who get hurt. Their best case scenario in that instance is to clear waivers and go to IR.

Permian Basin, good. Sounds a lot more rugged than Pebble Beach.

If the injury is not bad, then why IR him, I'd wait and put him on the PS.
According to Vacchiano ...

Dunker has a foot injury. He didn't provide specifics. Dunker was always a project anyways, and needs to improve his strength if he is ever to be seriously considered for a roster spot.
I guess I'm just never surprised
BigBlueWhale : 8/9/2017 12:32 pm : link
when a guy who is almost universally panned as someone who needs a year of development ends up on I.R. during camp.

You I.R. him because you don't want to expose him to the PS. And you have to make it look real so an early camp foot injury will fly under the radar.

Just throwing out the possibility, certainly not stating as fact.

You just answered your own question with regards to IR vs. practice squad. He can spend the IR year in the weight room improving his strength without using one of the practice squad spots, which are finite. The Giants have a lot of promising young players that are still projects - doesn't really hurt to try to stash a couple if the opportunity presents itself.

But I don't believe a player on the IR is allowed to practice with the team. He needs practice as much as he needs to work on his strength.

He can't practice but he can work out in an NFL strength and conditioning program. I was expecting wither Dunker or Wheeler to be stashed on IR with a minor injury because I didn't think either would last on the practice squad. So far Wheeler looks like a lock for a spot on the 53 man roster while Dunker will spend the season working out in order to earn a roster spot next season. I was hoping that if they went this route it would have happened towards the end of the preseason.

He wasn't likely to make the team

It's a way to stash, he gets an injury in camp, it's an opportunity to hold his rights for another year without taking up a PS spot, as mentioned.

Practice isn't as important because if he gets himself physically ready by the time next year starts he will have OTAs, training camp, and the whole preseason to practice, and he probably will still just be depth at that point, anyway. Cue Allen Iverson, "we talkin' 'bout practice."

It's fine. Smart move.
He needs a year in the weight room
Sy'56 : 8/9/2017 4:09 pm : link
as much as anyone...he has a lot to work with otherwise.
Curious about the salary scale. Does he get
Lurts : 8/9/2017 8:41 pm : link
The rookie scale, the much lower practice squad number, or it negotiable?
Let's add some reality to the discussion, at least
Bob in Newburgh : 8/10/2017 9:41 am : link
Undrafted free agent offensive linemen who do nothing in camp to create a positive buzz easily clear waivers if they are waived in the final round of cuts.

Because of teams getting no real info on him during the season it is highly unlikely he would be claimed during the season.
a few positive comments about him
bc4life : 8/10/2017 10:03 am : link
but he would have to have been setting camp on fire to make the team.
