NFT: USAA Members - Large Auto Insurance Premiums?

section125 : 8/9/2017 9:54 am
To my fellow USAA members, have you experienced large increases to your premiums in the last year on Auto insurance? We are in FL in a low crime county.

Mine increased 16% this year - no claims and aside from a new car, no changes to the policy.

My son is dropping USAA after a 35% increase(total) the last two years (he's 28) also with no fault on his part. He's switching to GEICO or Progressive which could never touch USAA in the past - both about 30% less.

USAA could offer no reasonable explanation about my increase. In fact when I called, the rep said the FL Insurance Commissioner mandated the increase. When I called the Insurance Commissioner's office, I was told in no uncertain terms that they do not mandate rate increases, merely approve or deny requests. (Did I mis-hear the rep?)

Did any non USAA people experience large premium increases without cause?
been with USAA for over 30 years

I have not seen a jump in premiums like you outlined. Sorry to hear about that increase for you and others.

This is correct. If USAA told you otherwise, they're mistaken/lying.
you know, people always told me USAA was very affordable

But when I got quotes from them in the past, I thought they were really high. So this doesn't surprise me.

I will say, however, that their service is first rate. In a past work life, I dealt with them frequently as a vendor and the homeowners we worked with never had anything but praise for their claims process, and we always got our checks in a timely manner. Definitely couldn't say that about a lot of the insurers we dealt with.
I dropped USAA

a few years ago, so much is state based, and in MA USAA has no pricing authority and they have to sell through independent agents. Most of the other companies can offer better discounts that USAA does not or will not offer.

so there was no benefit to using them other than the annual dividend (if they outperformed the estimates and they usually did).

Liberty Mutual offered me a discount through my employer and then when they jacked up their rates I switched to Arbella, but all through an independent agent.
I went shopping for Auto Insurance

when my independent insurance agent wouldn't respond to any of my messages to review my account to see if I could get a lower premium from another insurer.

I checked out USAA, Progressive, GEICO and a few others. GEICO saved us 40% over the premium we had been paying. The others offered some savings, but couldn't even come close to GEICO.
BTW

I'm in NC if that matters.

Their service is first rate. No quibbling or nit picking.

Just find this increase unwarranted.

I checked GEICO for myself and they were more expensive.

I have Geico too. They were the most affordable - roughly half what we had been paying with Nationwide, and when we had a claim recently the service wasn't bad. Wasn't perfect, but decent.
I was with USAA for many years ...

When I started they had the best rates, so I stayed with them. Then one year I decided to start shopping around again, and found a number of Insurance providers with better premiums. I have shopped them for several years now, and found I can always beat USAA rates.
I always thought USAA had the best rates

But to be honest, never shopped around. I got in through my dad and have been with USAA for about twenty five years.
I guess I better do some due diligence.
I've had USAA forever

Their service is incredible. I have not seen large increases in auto insurance premiums (I'm in MD).
I suspect that USAA has competitive prices depending on your State
Marty in Albany : 8/9/2017 1:25 pm : link
I don't USAA is competitive in NY. One thing is well known: USAA has superb customer service. Probably the best in the industry.
I've had USAA for over 30 years

I use them for auto and home owners. I've kept them because their service is incredible. I haven't seen sharp increases recently but I have seen gradual increases over the years. In California you can get other auto insurance for close to the same and you can get crap homeowners insurance for less.

Again their service is great. 3 months after we moved into our house, we had a homeowners claim. We had a serious underground gas leak which necessitated PG&E shutting off our gas. USAA stepped in, put us up in a hotel and authorized repairs. No paperwork, no inspection, no bullshit. Auto claims have been handled similarly. One phone call, then I can take my car to one of their authorized repair shops or get a cash settlement. I've always opted to use their repair shops. No delays, no paperwork and no nonsense.
We use a fair

amount of their banking products due to my wife's dad having been a member. They offered us car insurance years ago when we lived in NY and it was like double what we were paying with Geico.

This is true of almost all insurance quotes I have ever gotten when I have tried to shop around.

Needless to say, been a Geico auto insurance customer for 16 years or so.
