The Yankees have a long-standing tradition of not having names on the back of their jerseys. But due to a special event in baseball, that's going to change. MLB announced Wednesday that from Aug. 25-27 it will be celebrating Players Weekend across the league. What does that mean? It means players get to have creative names on the back of their jerseys, such as nicknames or anything creative they want. As part of the announcement, the league made sure to mention the Yankees. Yes, even the Yankees will have names on the back of their pinstripe jerseys, throughout that weekend series against the Mariners. Just imagine if this happened years ago, with the sight of Bambino, Joltin' Joe and the Mick over their numbers. |

Always about the cash money
Weird.
I look at it like Gardner thinking it's stupid and if he has to put a name on his jersey it might as well be his actual name.
Yeah, I thought that was the one silver lining. I thought when I read the headline that the players would look like they were wearing those knockoff pinstripes with the names on them, as if they bought their jerseys from a street vendor.
Still awful, but it could have been worse. 115 years with no names, and now this crap?
Nope Levine is precisely one of the guys George would have kept around 15 years and called one of his "baseball guys". Levine is just the type of low life sycophant ass kissers George would have loved.
Anything to make a buck.
fyi, I wont buy a jersey with names, tshirt yes jersey never. If someone chose not to wear a name he would be the next jersey I buy.
Nicknames are fun. We've all had them. If you didnt, sorry, but you probably didn't have friends or were a jerk.
In general, everyone needs relax with the holier than thou attitude.
I think the Yankees actually picked a few good ones. They obviously had fun with it. Good for them. They deserve to have some fun.
Mets have to be the worst in all of baseball. Which makes sense considering playing for the Mets and the Wilpons (and Sandy) is likely a completely miserable experience (relatively speaking).

You can enjoy watching teams wear these ugly softball uniforms & the money grab that MLB will reap from it. I understand that the younger generation might like them. But,actually, many of the players DIDN"T want to do this & were cajoled into doing it by management. This really is the XFL revisited & even the NFL,who does almost anything for money, hasn't sunk to this level! Yeah, I'm an old fart, holier than thou fan who doesn't see this as anything but a money grab by MLB. But then again,I believe in the hit & run,the bunt, the stolen base, putting the ball in play, moving runners over, making contact, you know, all the things that are now considered negative baseball so just ignore me & move along!
If I was a player on the Yankees, I would refuse to put a nickname on a jersey. I would rather both keep with tradition and not have a name on a Yankee uniform and also not put a stupid nickname on a professional uniform. Hell, I don't even like seeing the replica jerseys with the names on them? Who buys that knowing the Yankees don't do it?

As a softball player and guy who played sports his entire life, I fully support this idea.

Yeah, they call him BIG SCHOTT on the local high school diamond. It's the best, man! He even has it on his jersey!
I still think they should play naked for international Nude Day July 14th. I mean, i'm sure people would pay to see that right?

Only if they play all the games in Canada that day. I'm sure you crazy Canucks would eat that shit up. We here in the States would gladly listen on the old radio for that showing, no need for television crews to give us their feeds. Save some cash.

And I didn't even make the softball team.

Clearly didn't have any friends or nicknames while growing up.

Don't hang you head. I don't think anyone realizes the work and raw talent required to play 3B for a co-ed slow pitch softball team.
You have to give up Thursday evenings AND Saturday mornings. Sometimes there are double-headers and shit. Grueling.
Thanks for proving my point.

Totally. I already said I don't play softball anymore.
Try not to take your self so seriously.
But I gotta run, I have a softball game in an hour. I'll crack one open for you after the game. :)
Shame on me!
But now you're trying too hard...
Just relax, jokes should come naturally. Don't force them or you seem desperate for attention. FYI
Asking for a friend.
Who knew beer league softball players were so versatile.

bigschott is a five-tool softballer, bro. Dude can do it all. Hit tape measure HRs, run the bases like a freight train, scoop it a third, pick nicknames for the cool guys, and drive home successfully, semi-drunk from Coors Lights after the game.
Not following the previous post Re: demarini and worth...?
Also never really said I was a good player. Just play for fun to get away from the family for a couple of hours.

All good. I used to use a nasty Worth and hit fuckin moon shots. Won the league HR derby multiple times. Then I got old and quit like a pussy.
One of the leagues I played in wouldn't allow certain bats. Most of the Demarinis weren't allowed.
South Philly has a semi decent league filled with a bunch of (you guessed it) washed up high school baseball players from DV still trying to live out their fantasy of hitting a game winning home run...

Played in some tournaments against ex-MLB players. The last guy was Mel Hall of all people. Dude was hitting absolutely ridiculous bombs. Despite his checkered past, dude was killing the ball. Jerry Curl and all.
There's a Dominican team from the City that is pretty absurd. Those guys can do everything. Hit, field, talk shit, run, you name it. We beat them in the last Tourney. Barely.
