NFL got it right this time
Okay, but what does that mean?
BlackLight : 8/9/2017 3:32 pm : link
Are they going to have salary and benefits enough that they can make officiating their career, rather than just a side-gig?
I assume they'll have some guidelines around this part?

Also, the full-time officials will be permitted to have outside employment.

Also, and this is important -- Full-time officials will be able to have outside employment. It's just that this will be their full-time job.

Probably to allow this to be a more palatable option for officials who have their own business or are capable of setting a flexible schedule with other position
part time gigs

o n da Jerry Bus!

the NFL taking the criticism for not having full time Refs
Gross Blau Oberst : 8/9/2017 3:54 pm : link
But the NFL can't get the union of referee's to agree to full time refs until this year. Now the league has 21-24 full time refs out of a group of 124 NFL referee's.

Ooooooo Pardon my lack of excitement over this. 79% of the leagues referee's are still part timers. Overall reffing performance and quality will change with that low a number.

The referee's union is not interested in full time refs, and hinders any real chance to make full time refs a reality. Quality will not be improved under this plan.

Please continue to bash the league front office though, don't let the facts and union obstructionism get in your way.
Does this mean that Gene Steratore

Doesn't appear these full timers will be allowed to be a part of the union anymore.
Goodell mentioned this on Monday

I thought maybe I had missed the news this offseason, but it seems he may have been providing some asshat information.
The union is stopping them? Please
Vanzetti : 8/9/2017 4:46 pm : link
The NFL could break the refs union in two seconds. A union of 125 guys with a skill set that literally thousands have in the collegiate ranks has very little leverage.

The NFL does not have fulltime refs because they don't want to pay them.

Yeah, that worked out so well for the league ~5 years ago. Ask Packers fans. For a league that generates billions (that they admit to), i find it hard to believe this has been entirely about saving ~$40K year x 125 refs = $5MM. Hell, take it out of Goodell's salary... one of these days i'll understand how his market value is $30MM/year.
