Weston Richburg...

M.S. : 8/9/2017 7:48 pm
...check out this video at about the 40-second mark.

Giants are strong right against a 3-4 Redskins defense, with Ziggy Hood (#90) shading to the right of Center.

Richburg, then a 3-year young vet, commits a cardinal sin --
he assumes Ziggy Hood is going to be in the perfect spot to be power blocked, but one problem.

Ziggy takes a quick step to the left, and in a space of 12 inches, Weston Richburg lets Ziggy Hood cross his face and completely fans on a 300+ pound man.

A complete swing and a miss that lets Ziggy Hood waltz into our backfield untouched.

The good news: A lot of running backs would have taken it in the grill, but Paul Perkins showed tremendous instincts that turned a disaster into positive yardage.

The bottom line: Every one is wondering whether or not the light goes on for Ereck Flowers in 2017. (Most likely, it will flicker from game to game.) But that's a secondary consideration to how well our second round pick out of Colorado State holds up!

The O-line begins with the Center, and when he gets it wrong, nothing works. Weston Richburg needs to perform at a consistently "decent" level all year long for this offense to realize its full potential.

Define "massively". You may be reading a different board.

No, I'm reading BBI. Too many people excuse his issues for various reasons (injuries, "Jerry stinks", etc) yet all I see is Richburg getting manhandled against top tier DTs. He gets beat at the point of attack far too often.

I'm not saying he's awful, but he's nowhere near the talent that a lot of people here think he is. He's an average Center.

Please tell us more. I'm sure your Golf Pro knowledge translates directly to NFL scouting.
He played all year with a broken hand
Milton : 8/10/2017 6:52 am : link
He was much better in 2015 and that's when the Giants offense finished in the top ten. And if that offense could finish in the top ten, imagine how good the 2017 version can be if their key players have a healthy year.

On both offense and defense, this is a Super Bowl quality team health permitting. But injuries will happen, that much we know, it's just a matter of who and how many. And it is the "who" and "how many" which will determine the team's ultimate fate, because there isn't a team in the NFC with a better roster at this point in time.
My problem with Richburg
Simms11 : 8/10/2017 7:06 am : link
is his lack of strength. He seems to get pushed back an awful lot. Saying that, however, I do think he's a decent Center and is well above average out in space, at the second level. I hope he's worked on building his strength in the off-season. He's certainly not out biggest concern on this line.

I'm not a golf pro. But it doesn't take much to watch a Center get pushed backwards against DTs. Literally just need to look at the line play, and focus on the Center.

Your snarky response is exhibit A of my point. How dare I say Richburg is not a good Center????

We need better play from him this year.
I think it s the pretty common opinion
joeinpa : 8/10/2017 7:43 am : link
That the jury is still out on the Giants offensive line including the center.

Even with Pugh and his injury issues.

The Giants have two 1 s and a 2 invested in that line, that s a big investment, one that if they missed on has huge consequences.

Let s hope this is the year they come together as a unit and play consistent good football. But there is no history of success with this line so that any of it s members are overvalued.
Weston Richburg was PFF's highest-graded Center in 2015...
Klaatu : 8/10/2017 7:51 am : link
And was one of their 10 biggest Pro Bowl snubs for that year.

Last year, playing with torn ligaments in his snapping hand, his run-blocking grade took a nosedive, but his pass-blocking grade remained pretty high. PFF noted that Richburg's "pass-blocking efficiency was tied for third in the NFL among centers, he only allowed 11 total pressures (one sack) on 611 pass-blocking snaps."

Now, you can buy what PFF is selling or not, but, frankly, much of the criticism of Richburg reminds me of what was said about Shaun O'Hara throughout his career. Baseless, no foundation, and in Richburg's case, most likely coming from the same people who thought he was a "reach" in the second round.

So I, like the rest of us, was disappointed in the lack of progression last year. Whatever the reason, be it the injury to his hand, different guys playing next to him, etc., he needs to get back on track this year. He has the talent and the attitude, so I believe he will do it.

While I disagree with the premise of the OP picking out one play to show Richburg not playing up to a high level, I do think that he needs to show hes a top center this year in order to get paid. Same goes for Pugh. They are talented players, but need to be consistent throughout the whole year and take that next step to carry this line.

A few comments, observations about last night's game...

M.S. : 12/23/2016 6:50 am

(1) With the score at 21-6, I was certain this was just going to be one more humiliation suffered by the Giants down at the Linc. The fact that it became a very competitive game is why this year's version of the Giants is far superior to what we've been treated to over the past three years;

(2) There were some bullshit penalties against the Giants, especially the Eli Apple one when Carson Wentz slid into him as much as Apple slid into Wentz. And what the F*CK is Olivier Vernon supposed to do when he's chasing one of the most mobile QBs in the NFL and finally gets a hold of him on the attempted screen play? Is he supposed to wrap him up, but lay him down very gently? Just a bunch of bullshit.

(3) And no penalty called on the 4th down pass to Sterling Sheppard late in the game??? Guess I don't know what pass interference is!

(4) Long after Eli Manning takes to his rocking chair, are we gonna have to put up with watching Carson Wentz avoid 11 defenders on a single play? We can't tackle this son of a bitch and how he ducked away from our entire D-line in the 4th Qtr. is beyond my comprehension;

(5) Speaking of Eli Manning, I don't give a fuck how many yards he threw for last night. That pick 6 was a killer and -- when it counted most -- he overthrew OBJ at the very end when our star receiver ran an amazing route to get open against triple coverage;

(6) And speaking of yardage. I wouldn't take any solace in our gaudy 450+ yards gained last night. Fucking meaningless. For one thing, the Eagles played just a little softer once they went up 21-6. But more to the point -- the Giants lost this game because the offense got worse and worse as it got closer and closer to the Eagles' end zone. Too many FGs for us; too many TDs for them. The math is quite simple: 24-19 = L

(7) What isn't meaningless is that the Giants didn't fold at the Linc like teams of the past. The Giants fought to the end, and if we HAVE to beat the Redskins next week to make the playoffs, that's exactly what this team will do.

Definitely Richburg played better the year before... I thought he did fine. And I know his hand was messed up last season, but that ole on Ziggy Hood was not his only swing-and-a-miss in 2016, which isn't about a bad hand. Just lunging and not looking. I'm sure hoping for a bounce back in 2017. Our line really needs a leader and I'm looking at Richburg to be that guy!

No offense, GiantGolfer, but your statement is a joke.

When healthy, Richburg has proven to be one of the best Centers in the game, as he showed in 2015.

Rather than being "massively overrated," by some here, I'd say he's been "massively underrated" by many more.
I am a fan of Richburg and Pugh
Johnny5 : 8/10/2017 11:41 am : link
Richburg had a down year no question, both he and Pugh NEED to stay more (relatively) healthy. Is Richburg the best center in the league? Definitely no... but when he is fully healthy he is pretty good. I am expecting a rebound for these guys, the thing is we need consistency. Additions of weapons are going to help, a LOT. We don't need a complete 180 degree turn here, just better play from Flowers/Hart (which you have to think will improve this year even a little bit) more consistency overall, better health (MOST IMPORTANT), and these guys being able to get more and more reps TOGETHER. I think that happens this year, and couple that with better weapons I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised this year.

Shhh, you'll burst their bubble. Last year in the Washington game, everyone wanted to crucify Jerry for what seemed like a blown assignment that led to the sack of Eli. After review of the film, it was clear that it was Richburg's fault. Yet, the myth of Jerry persisted throughout the season and into the off-season.

Coming from the poster who openly suggested Eli should hold out and get more guaranteed money because the Giants drafted Davis Webb.

But by all means, play the "we" vs. "they" game. Because you're definitely not an intentional contrarian or anything.

but yes, he did play the entire year through torn ligaments in his hand that happened in preseason. http://giantswire.usatoday.com/2017/06/25/new-york-giants-weston-richburg-best-pass-blocking-center-2016/[/img]

And he still graded out well in pass blocking. Good offensive line plays don't stand out to be seen by tv-watching fans.

It is ridiculous that players that haven't accomplished what he has are being paid more than him. This off-season there was a large contingent that was penciling Webb in as the future. Where I would counter that the history of mid-to-late round prospects that the Giants have drafted in Eli's tenure haven't amounted to anything.

I don't think people like GiantGolfer realize how difficult it probably was for Richburg to play his position with the injuries he had last year.

He was very good in 2015 and I expect him to be very good again this year if he's healthy.

Is he the best OC in the NFL? No, I don't think anyone's saying that. But he was above average 2 seasons ago and should be again if he can actually use both of his hands. You know, that's kind of important for a lineman to be able to do. Especially right in the middle.
The responses in this thread are only proving my point.

Saying Richburg had a good year in 2015 and noting his injuries in 2016 as the likely culprit behind his dropoff is "massively overrating" the player?

I would go on to assume that your definition of massively overrating someone isn't quite in line with most other people.

Bullshit narrative? I watched with my own eyes Richburg get pushed back by multiple DTs. Everyone excuses this poor play because of injuries. I don't agree with that "bullshit" excuse. Aren't I allowed to disagree?

Why are you being so nasty?
It's not a bullshit narrative.
Diver_Down : 8/10/2017 9:07 pm : link
As Giants fans, we are so used to seeing a center get pushed back that it is expected play for a player who is supposed to anchor the middle. Now, to compensate for this soft play, we have a head coach criticize our 2 time superbowl winning MVP QB that he has to get used to a dirty pocket. Instead of focusing where to lay the blame, it is easier to shift the blame to Eli.
.
arcarsenal : 8/10/2017 9:19 pm : link
Everyone is free to have their own opinion - it is mine that claiming Richburg to be massively overrated or not a good center is a crappy one.

There was a legitimate reason for his struggles last year. Don't you think a center having torn tendons in his snapping hand would make it quite difficult to anchor his spot and keep DT's from pushing him backwards?

He was pretty widely regarded as one of the better up and coming OC's in football 2 years ago and his play warranted it.

If he's 100% this season, I feel very confident in saying that he'll have a good campaign.

Last year - torn tendons. Year before? He still got pushed back. Sy had mentioned that Weston needs to hit the weight room. I hope his tendons are fully healed, but I suspect the recovery prevented him from getting stronger. So I expect a fully healed center that will still get pushed back. We are used to it. Eli will take the blame for the dirty pocket. And all will be right in BBI-land.

Frankly, Richburg really hasn't even been a conversation around here all offseason. It's been Pugh, who has made no secret of the fact that he can't wait to get a free agent contract, that everyone has tried to debate the merits of.

I didn't create the topic. All I did was offer my opinion. I never expected everyone to agree with me. In fact, I made it clear that my opinion was in the minority by saying Richburg is massively overrated on BBI. I just don't understand why my opinion has to be "crazy" or "a joke", when the proof is right there on tape. I keep getting told "he was injured!!!" I'm not buying it. Other players played through injuries and performed well (Vernon, for instance).

Again, I hope I'm proven wrong this year and Richburg adds the necessary strength and anchors our line to success.

Actually, you did exactly that - you hid from it as soon as I pointed out that at the end of his current contract, Eli will be the highest paid player in NFL history.

Players that haven't accomplished what he has are for the most part younger. And you still haven't answered why he doesn't take one for the team like Brady does in order to benefit the team. He's on pace for $200M+ even before endorsements. Shouldn't he give the Giants a hometown discount to build his supporting cast the way Brady has and pave his way into Canton in the process?

You're a joke.

on 1 single play, it's just a small sample of Richburg's issues. He is massively overrated on BBI.

And I won't hide from statement regarding Eli and his contract status. He missed an opportunity this training camp to get more money. It is ridiculous that players that haven't accomplished what he has are being paid more than him. This off-season there was a large contingent that was penciling Webb in as the future. Where I would counter that the history of mid-to-late round prospects that the Giants have drafted in Eli's tenure haven't amounted to anything.

Well, you could have responded to it, but you didn't. Because you hid from your comments. But I don't consider it derailing a thread to point out that your credibility is suspect at best.

Sorry, I don't wait on your beckon call. I know this might hurt, but I don't wait around and constantly check to see if someone responds so I can respond back. You just aren't that important. But if you need to stroke your ego, start your thread. I'll dance. I might not respond right away, because I won't be hitting refresh in eagerness for your thread.

You made a topic on a discussion board that people disagree with a portion of. If you go with a sweeping generalization and put words in people's mouths, you're gonna get some disagreement, especially when it's accusing other people of being wrong.

You're not buying what? You think the injury was made up or you think it shouldn't effect the play of an OC?

A DE has the luxury of the edge and unless he's stunting, he's only going to have a player to his inside. It's not that difficult to see how Vernon and JPP were able to overcome playing with less than 2 hands.

When you're dead center on the interior, you need to anchor yourself upright. Try to imagine yourself attempting to brace the impact of a 300lb DT with torn tendons in one of your hands and stay grounded. You don't think it would be exponentially more difficult to do if you could only really grab and push with one hand?

Jesus you are exhausting. You're right, I'm wrong. Okay? Can you sleep better now? Wow.

I hope he proves me wrong and plays better this year and earns the "one of the top Centers" in the NFL designation that so many want to give him.

LOL, you're making these claims and then when someone refutes them, you get all flustered and don't want to discuss it.

I just thought it was strange to claim that you "don't buy it" when the injury has been well-documented at this point. I don't know how anyone in their right mind could assume that torn tendons in a snapping hand wouldn't have any effect on the play of a center.

Sorry for being "exhausting" - I thought this was a message board.

I guess people aren't allowed to disagree with you. I understand now. Excuses trump all. Got it.

It actually seems like the reverse is true. You're throwing a borderline tantrum because people disagreed with you.

I didn't say no one could disagree with me or that I had to be right, I simply backed up my opinion. You haven't done anything other than claim that Richburg is massively overrated and that torn tendons in his hand are somehow an excuse and that you "don't buy it."

Alrighty!

I wasn't the one who called your opinion "crazy" or "a joke". I've been completely civil in the discussion. All I've done is disagree with the excuses. All you have to do is read the thread. It's all right here in black and white.

Again, I hope Richburg proves me wrong becomes a top Center. I think we all can agree with that.

I actually don't think I used either of those words... you seem to be confusing me with other posters in this thread.

I was a bit of an asshole, though. So I apologize. I do think I made it mostly about football rather than personal attacks, though. And most of my comments were more civil than not.

Anyway, yes - we all agree that we'd like to see Weston have his strongest year this year and hope that he's 100% healthy.
Thank you.

last year or the year before Hart and Flowers need to show
improvement and consistency , Richberg and Pugh need to
up there game and I suspect they will as they are playing
for not just contracts but a shot at another trophy .
Jerry is a decent pass blocker and we have Fluker who
has not played all that great but he should be a decent
back up .

For what it's worth, I agree with you. So far it's been a mixed bag with Richburg. He's an OK athlete who's undersized. Certainly nothing he does ever makes you say wow. Had 1 good year out of 3. Yes he played G as a rookie, but not well. That's a bad thing, not a good thing. Played poorly through injury last year. Bad thing, not good thing. Harsh? Maybe. But it's a harsh business.

We can definitely all agree this is a big year and obviously as Giants fans we hope he dominates. Would think that goes without saying. He plays well, he validates himself. He struggles again....that's 3 out of 4.

Claiming, to this date, that he's at any point been the best C in the NFL falls into the pom pom waving category. IMO. I'm not going to rattle off names but there are some next level C's in this league and 1 of them is in the division.

Not really. Richburg is 6'4", 300. Average starting C is 6'4, 306.

That's all well and good, except I'm pretty sure no one did that.
