DX with heel HHH marrying Stephanie and then her siding with him was better than the nWo burying everyone, every single week, for ...3 fucking years. 1997 nWo, eh and then Sting looking like a bitch at Starrcade 97. Laughable. What's honestly worse than all of that is when they had to do that take over show right before the PPV.

What was there left for them to take over? They were fighting against the machine that...they were? Hogan had the belt and then Bischoff was in charge anyway apart of the nwo. Eh. Didn't get it.

DX started the Attitude Era.

DX is the greatest stable group of all time, main eventing arenas across the country.

DX shirts outsold all competitors during the attitude era.

Yes. I'm still a sucker for that New Age Outlaws intro. Crowd was jacked. Loved that tag team.

NWO got me to finally pay more attention to WCW
NYG27 : 8/11/2017 12:59 pm : link
DX got me to switch back to WWE, along with the Rock, Mick Foley and Stone Cold.

I watched more WCW with NWO for a few years but switched back to WWE when Foley won his first WWE Championship. If they didn't "spoil" it on the WCW broadcast, I would have never turn the channel to see it. LOL

That had to be the biggest turning point in the Monday Night Wars. I think I read that over 600,000 people switched the channel to USA to watch Mankind win the title and give WWE their first ratings win for Monday Night in almost 80 weeks. After that 2 year run with WCW dominating the ratings, they never won another ratings war against afterwords that huge mistake to announce the ending of that recorded match on live TV.
Was never a big DX guy

More pointing out the revisionist history that makes DX a much bigger deal than they were because of who is running the company. Austin and the nWo drove the wrestling boom.

Blasphemy!

NWO Sucked ass. DX was far superior. The DX vs. Nation feud was one of the greatest in wrestling history!
I also liked NWO much more
UConn4523 : 8/11/2017 1:12 pm : link
DX got corny for me, and the new age outlaws stunk as wrestlers, IMO. HHH and Sean Michaels were great, however.
I preferred nWo

That night Foley won the title over the Rock in early 1999 is my all time favorite moment in wrestling. It had everything. The Rock, Austin makes a showing to get under the skin of McMahon, the Corporation /Dx were the lumberjacks, and it was cool to finally see a fat ass guy with messed up hair running around with the big belt. Immediately the first thing I think of when I hear the words “Attitude Era”.

UConn, You didnt like DX but liked “middle of the road” guys like NOD, who DX had a feud with in the summer of 1998? DX was a good penultimate participant match to the main event (always Austin) after Michaels got hurt when HHH was the leader. One of my favorite PPVs was 1998 Summerslam.

Like it or not, in 1998 DX was hot. Everyone my age was doing that stupid crotch chop at the time. I even got in trouble for doing it for doing it in school, much like every other young male growing up in the world did in 1998.

Also, about the New Age Outlaws sucking, thats why I liked them in a weird way. They were just thrown together it seemed and had nothing going or them, it just somehow worked. Even when they were bad guys everyone still did the “Oh you didn’t know” “Tag team champions of the woorrrrld” Etc. Those guys were over.

Anakim, I thought the Corporate Ministry was one of the bigger duds in the Attitude Era. Everything after Vince was revealed to be the “Higher Power” in June or so of 1999 and with the addition of Smackdown in late 1999 (a bit of an over exposure of wrestling) kind of cooled my interest off. I watched but stopped for the first time in years a bit after Austin’s heel turn at WrestleMania X-17. Triple H’s heel run from 1999 until he got hurt in 2001 was BRILLIANT.

I think to be honest, even in late 2000 I got a bit bored with it, well because the Giants were kicking ass with Kerry Collins, Amani Toomer, and Hillard and I didn’t care about Vince trying to shove the XFL down our throats. 1998 and 1999 are seasons for the Giants I was a bit foggy about because my main interest was wrestling, at the time. I did watch here and there until 2004, and started watching the network this past year in February 2017. I just watch go to/PPVs out of bordem.

Exactly, this was such an underrated fuck up on WCW’s part making Sting look like such a bitch. Then, of course, it made it look like Hogan was the one “screwed”. I did like nWo red vs nWo white for some reason in 1998. Also, Goldbergs rise to stardom was what caught my attention. Him, being another one who wrestling fans are quite salty over these days, but can’t deny he was white hot in 1997-1998 when he was whipping everyones ass.

Either way, they fucked it up again with that finger poke bullshit, the same night Foley won the belt on RAW. Now wonder WWF won “The wars”… Why in the widest of earths would you after building up Nash vs Goldberg Part II/rematch (this is after Nash ended Goldberg’s streak, now, mind you) do that? After a week of waiting, it was Hogan….HOGAN….staring down Nash, and not Goldberg because of some stupid ass stalking storyline which got Goldberg out of the picture. Hogan wasn’t even on TV for a while at that point. nWo gets back together after all is said and done as this stupid as “Red Elite nWo” Faction. Awful. Even before the finger poke happened, it was ruined by Hogan once again. Just seeing him, in the middle of the ring, somehow…some way. Made it about him. What else was new? Thats why I flipped the channel. This wasn’t what I wanted to see (the same guy week and week out babbling on about his nWo-ites). Boring.

Thats when wrestling was kind of fun because I didn’t give a shit about “in ring ability”, I just wanted fun intense characters/storylines that kept me watching week after week. Something 2017 wrestling doesn’t do for me. No need to watch RAW. I don’t even think I knew what a “mark” was in 1998.

the HBK version the best...mainly because heel HBK was such a great character. NWO started out with so much momentum but they botched nearly every major angle they were involved in. I'll never forget watching Piper vs. Hogan in 96 with my buddies and getting all fired up when Piper won...only to find out the next night it was actually a non-title match - which WCW never said beforehand. They followed it up the next year by botching the finish of Sting-Hogan. Crap like that just didn't happen in WWF. At least not all that often.
^ Yep.

Hahahahah Starrcade 1996. Isn’t that when that fan jumped in the ring to get Hogan? Big Show had Piper midway through a chokeslam and they both had that WTF look on their faces. See, thats when people took it personal and wrestling was mainly watched by a bunch of redneck psychos who thought it was real, lol.

Now we get “this is awesome” chants by a bunch of hipsters and its just annoying. Arc, you’re a Ranger fan, thats all the ridiculousness you need in your life, I guess.

Also, in addition to this, how many times can you do the 1-2 “Lets go Cena/Cena Sucks” mixed chant? We get it. If the crowd’s reaction is more interesting during the match than the guy wrestling in the ring, doesn’t it mean that that guy does… actually suck?

Or is that “I’m causing a stir/getting a reaction and no one else is so thats why Im the best” dynamic?

Either way, good chat gang. Off to Bill Burr.

I think that was Havoc 97 when they recycled the same feud. After the match Savage jumped off the top of the cage...and it wasn't the tiny WWF blue cage...it was pretty damn high. Ridiculous bump for a guy that age.

Yeah, the Corporate Ministry was a bit of a dud, but the feud between the Corporation and the Ministry was amazing. Undertaker kidnapping Stephanie; Undertaker literally hanging Big Boss Man; Inferno matches; the Brood walking through the ring of fire and giving people bloodbaths; Undertaker burning a teddy bear and Vince breaking down...

The Rock in the Corporation and early on in his face run was untouchable. Greatest wrestling character of all-time. He was so fucking cool that no one then and since could rival him. In his first 'Mania match with SCSA in Philadelphia, it was a legit. 50/50 split between the red hot SCSA and the brash, young Rock. Couple that with Kane, who was also a favorite of mine (because he was the baby brother and I'm a baby brother) and the Corporation was awesome.

NWO Hollywood vs. the Wolfpac was decent and I loved the Wolfpac as a teen. But it always pissed me off that Hall was in NWO Hollywood and not the Wolfpac since Hall is a member of the real life Wolfpac with Nash and Sean Waltman. It pissed me off even more when I found the reason for that was Hogan, who had creative control, made Bischoff have Hall be in NWO Hollywood because he had "no one else that was cool" in his version of the NWO. That kind of turned me off, and it didn't last all that long, either since guys like Savage and Sting got injured and the Wolfpac just kind of disintegrated after that.

Didn't Hall eventually switch to the Wolfpack? Although I think he spent the majority of the time with the Black and White. I didn't know that story about Hogan. Very interesting, especially since it seemed like half the roster was in the NWO. And blasphemy! If Big Poppa Pump isn't cool, then cool has no meaning. Haha

He had promise when he debuted as Taker's wife Sarah's stalker, but after that, with that whole inspirational speaker gimmick...ugh. They never gave him a fair shake.

Hall joined the Wolfpac like a couple weeks before the fingerpoke of doom, which was then NWO Hollywood and the Wolfpac all reunited as one. So, he did eventually join after he feuded with Nash, but it was a very short period of time before the NWO reunited. I was a big Kliq fan, so I never bought the whole Nash/Hall feud in WCW, plus the matches sucked balls.

I didn't like DDP back then because I thought he looked like trailer trash. But as of a few years ago, going back and watching him during that era, he was great. So underrated.

And I laugh when people say 'Taker is one of the few guys who never played politics or screwed anyone over. That's exactly what he did to DDP in that feud. DDP should've never been a stalker to begin with, IMO. He should've been 1997 WCW face DDP. He was massively over and the fans loved his diamond hand signal and the Diamondcutter. A shame how he was treated.
Yeah, supposedly 'Taker never liked DDP
Anakim : 8/11/2017 9:10 pm : link
DDP originally wanted a "People's Champion" vs. "People's Champion" program with the Rock. 'Taker and Vince wanted to destroy anything WCW-related. That's why during the Invasion storyline, the WCW guys were buried for the most part. Later on, I think Vince became more accepting of the WCW and its big time characters like Goldberg and Sting. Guys who committed to the WWE, like Booker T, Rey Mysterio, Krispin Wah, Eddie Guerrero, Y2J...thrived.

If I could bring back one (alive) guy from the past (aside from the Rock. THE REAL Rock), it would be Scott Steiner. Of course Steiner would fail the drug tests and wouldn't really fit in with today's PG entertainment, but the guy was just hilarious. His promos were amazing.
And I'm back....
Route 9 : 8/11/2017 11:48 pm : link
Scott Hall had a drug problem during that early 1998 run didn’t he? Well, he had one the entire 1998 run or …the whole time, I think late 1998 was when they started to make into a storyline. Like it was “so serious” both nWo factions had to come out and help him out.

Either way in early 1998, when Hall was out sometime when Nash and Hogan were having their inter-nWo feud (and Nash eventually became leader of the red nWo wolf-pac) The Outsiders were still the WCW tag team champions. So Hall made his return at Slamboree 1998 with the RED nWo shirt for their match vs WCW Sting but nWo Giant, in that weird swerve where Nash and Hall split, with Hall hitting Nash with the title belt, yet Sting and Giant were WCW Tag Team Champions(???), with Hall drifting to nWo Hollywood. Sting just stood there stunned. Pretty weird.

I did like that time in WCW, with the nWo brands splitting, DDP and Goldberg’s rise. It was finally cool to see an nWo faction become a baby face. The bar brawls, battle royals and backstage brawls those two factions had made wrestling so fucking fun to watch at that time. Bret Hart kept trying to poke at nWo red Sitng saying he was his friend. Scott Steiner and Buff Bagwell kept trolling Rick and the audience into thinking they were good guys and then, nope. I think it was Fall Brawl 1998 where Buff faked an injury on his previously injured neck and they spent like 20 minutes chewing up time on a PPV just so Bagwell and Scott could jump his brother Rick. Kind of funny now that I think about it, WCW had a lot of sack to try things out of the box. I think thats what cost them in the long run though because they thought “way too out of the box” to keep people interested when I think WWF just took off keeping it simple, having HHH as the main heel and rolling with the Rock as the main good guy, with Foley’s retirement on the horizon and also, of course, Undertaker and Austin even more so, being put on the shelf for a good part of 2000.

Just go on WWE Network and watch Judgement Day 2000 when Taker comes back and Triple H is announced the winner. The crowd was so pumped and excited to see Undertaker finally back (dressed as a Lesbian biker) but then the reaction Triple H got that night for being announced as the winner and beating the Rock is pure, vintage, good old American HEAT. Thats what was made wrestling exciting, wanting to see guys like him LOSE and guys like Rock, WIN.

Whats funny about DDP in early 1999 when he started having his feud with Scott Steiner, he started getting booed because his character was so stale as “the superstar” and Steiner was the one getting cheered for throwing DDP’s wife out of the car. I did like him but thought they waited way too long to put the strap on him, and I’m not surprised that didn’t happen, because of well, you know, Hogan. WCW’s best feud of all time (or the time I watched) was that Savage/DDP feud from 1997.

Yeah Anakim, none of those former WCW guys sniffed the main belts in WWF after WCW was bought and buried in the invasion story line. Once there were two belts and WWF was the unanimous victors, Vince could start doing whatever the fuck he wanted, signing free agent WCW guys later on and giving the watered down “main championships” to guys like Benoit, Eddie, Rey, Booker T, Goldberg…when it of course the WWF Championship holder card didn’t mean as much (when Austin, Rock, Foley, Taker, HHH had it) of course. Forgot about Big Show having it but he just got for like a month (with that stupid Boss man dead dad storyline, lol) and put it back on HHH (with DX Stephanie). I could talk about this shit all day and night.
BTW, just saw on Twitter
