superspynyg : 8/11/2017 4:38 pm
Jamie Garcia 5-8 (0-1 yank) 4.49 vs Eduardo Rodriguez 4-3 4.06

Yanks lineup
LF Hicks
DH Sanchez
RF Judge
SS Didi
3b Frazier
1b Cooper
CF Ellsbury
2b Torreyes
C. Romine

Red Sox lineup
2b Nunez
RF Betts
LF Benintendi
1b Ramirez
DH Young
SS Bogaerts
C Vazquez
CF Bradley Jr

We really need to win tonight. Can't make Rodriguez look like a CY Young candidate. We need hits and runs. Sox are in a tear. 9-1 in last 10 games including 8 in a row.

We have Severino on the mound tomorrow and he always gives us a chance to win.

Gardy's been struggling
bceagle05 : 8/11/2017 4:44 pm : link
but I'm surprised he's not in there for an important series like this. Maybe we'll see him late if there's a clutch hit needed in the late innings.

Ellsbury has struggled the last few years. I like my chances with Gardy. He's been a vital cog for this team.
Eduardo Nunez has been a huge pick up for them
RGhost : 8/11/2017 5:04 pm : link
especially with Pedrioa on the DL. Looks like they've also been playing him around the infield to give guys a rest.

Holy Smokes! 420/442/780/1.222 since the trade, just looked it up.

He was raking after coming back from the hamstring injury in July in SF, but that's nuts.

That's still a .400 OBP for a game. Considering that no one else in the lineup is likely to do that, I doubt he moves down.
Judge still gets on base.

If whoever was hitting behind him scared the pitcher, he wouldn't be carrying that line every game.

Sanchez probably has the second or third best OPS on the team the past few weeks. He's been good with no one on base and absolutely HORRENDOUS with anyone on. I guess moving him up to the 2 hole mitigates that problem... hopefully.

Garrett freakin' Cooper is the only guy on the team who's even made solid contact with RISP lately. Everyone else is striking out, popping up, or hitting a worthless fly ball with 2 outs. It's fucking ridiculous.
I really like Judge
mstyles22.0 : 8/11/2017 5:39 pm : link
he's been great and I want him to succeed. And yes, he doesn't get a lot of protection.

But man, he looks so lost up there.

mstyles22.0 : 8/11/2017 5:46 pm : link
if things got heated this series between the two teams this weekend.

It's mid-August, the Sox are red hot. The Yankees are fighting for their lives. There are a lot of young players new to this rivalry and sensitivities will be at a maximum.

I'm not predicting a Varitek - ARod situation, but a bench warning or two wouldn't surprise me.

Fights happen a lot less with young players who are new to a rivalry. It's the experienced players holding a grudge (on both sides) that usually cause the tension.

As for Chapman - Coney and Paulie are right. It's time to get creative at the end of these games. I have less faith in Chappy than anyone not named Shreve in our bullpen.

I didn't think so...still would be tying run on second with one out, and they all know Hicks has a laser for an arm. I can see the value of playing aggressively, but didn't think it was smart in that case

I definitely agree. It was deep, plus with Nunez speed which is probly in the top 5% of MLB speed. Plus Hicks momentum was going backward a bit, just made a monster hgh like throw

Ron from Ninerland : 8/11/2017 11:03 pm : link
1. There are three certainties in life. Death, Taxes and Boston relief pitchers getting lit up by the Yanks.

2. I wish Girardi would manage to win at this stage in the season. True, they pulled this out of their ass but it should be obvious by now that Chapman is not Mariano fucking Rivera. Normally you'd let him pitch through it but this series needs to be treated like the post season. If the Yankees get swept here, the season is probably done. Betances and Robertson should have been up in the bullpen as soon as Chapman went 3-0 on the first batter and he should have been pulled after the second walk. If not for some bone headed base running, who knows how this would have turned out.

It is a mistake, Nunez has plenty of speed he scores on a single. He has to know the arm he is running on, the ball is in front of him. It is a mistake. If he makes it you say great but you know by him going it is not the right baseball move.

It's a mistake for sure. But I'm curious if the 3bc tagged him up and they gambled. It's not without precedent for Farrell. First place. Chance to completely demoralize the Yanks with the closer really struggling. The guy in LF hasn't played in months. I don't hate it. But it's not something I'd teach. Perhaps in the situation it's warranted though. I get it to some extent.

Different approaches. Baseball purists say youre right. But I think the situation dictates you go for 3rd there with the guy who was running from 2nd. Looks like I was wrong. But I think you test a guy who hasnt made that throw in a LONGGGGG time, one of the best closers in baseball on the hill and down by a run in the 9th.

That Nunez got thrown out on. Fly ball caugh makes 1.

With Nunez's speed, getting the tying run to third with one out is worth testing the arm. Its going to take a bang-bang play every time to get a guy who runs like Nunez. They Yanks got him by the skin of their teeth thanks to a fantastic play by Frazier.

That's a matter of good execution by the Yanks. I don't think Nunez or the coaches have any remorse about the decision.

Come up small when pressure is on.
Lack of clutch hitting, baserunning blunders(omitting the Nunez pro/con from this), a fading bullpen, plus a mgr that also comes up small, will do them in. Isn't this one the 3rd or 4th game they blew to the Yanks this season(and at least 1 they almost blew)?

A perfect throw does not have to be right on the bag. If I am the fielder I am throwing a foot and a half off the base to the playing side. Anywhere the third baseman can just tag down on the runner is better than a throw to the middle or foul line side of the bag.

Glad we agree on at least one thing. 😉
It was a dumb decision and Eduardo Scissorhands remains an idiot

Taking third on a fly ball to left isn t a high percentage play in general. When Hicks is the left fielder, it's that much more of a low percentage play.
here's how the Boston Globe saw it -

"Benintendis sacrifice fly to left field scored Bradley. But in a mind-numbing bit of base running, Nunez tagged up and was thrown out at third by Hicks.

Farrell called it a hell of a throw. But it actually was well in front of the base and bounced. Nunez was easily out.

Nunez has a history of erratic base running, but this was particularly egregious. Not only does Hicks have one of the best outfield arms in baseball, he played with Nunez in 2015 when they were with the Twins.

Hicks caught the ball moving toward the line, but it was not a risk worth taking given his arm strength."
Here's what I don't get

I was reading through the SoSH thread as I am wont to do following a big NYY victory, and more than once I came across reference to "the joke Yankee Stadium HR by Hicks." Isn't that exact shot 12-15 rows back at Fenway, where Pesky Pole is the shortest RF homer in all of ball? I generally don't understand how anyone who calls Fenway home can make light of any other ballpark's dimensions...
Hicks has a cannon..

but even on the gamecast Smoltz was saying it is a play you have to try because it forces the Yanks to make a great throw and tag.

The only problem is it wasn't a great throw - it was a great tag, but if Hicks sends it on a line, Nunez isn't even sliding before Frazier has the ball.

It is a risk a first place team can make, but it wasn't a smart play.
