In all seriousness, he looked really good - but its a tiny sample. Just as I don't want to put too much stock in some of the OL play, I don't want to go nuts about a quarter from Bromley either - but if he's really turning the corner now we're going to have one hell of a defensive line.
In the East-West Shrine Game several years ago to finally show up. As arc says, you don't want to go nuts, but it was still a good sign, and hopefully a harbinger of things to come.
he moves bodies in there, very active, fundamental, and instinctive. Bugs me that Bromley seems to be waking up in a contract year too.
Very convenient, isn't it? Bromley has also talked about getting paid big bucks. But if he can help in 2017...I suppose it's more than I would have expected.
He was one of my biggest takeaways last night.
That and...
I always worry if "emerging" players are really going to be consistent... and Landon Collins was the best player on the field last night. He actually may get better this year.
Kerry Wynn isn't going to go quietly.
B.J. Goodson looks much improved, but I think he was a bit over-excited last night. I spotted him running himself out of position on at least one play.
Josh Johnson isn't good. Geno Smith started off well, but seemed to fade pretty quickly. That interception was just awful and can't happen. (That said, Smith looks like the much better QB).
As I've said all offseason, I'm not sure we have a running game.
Rhett Ellison is a much better receiver than many of us thought. Jerell Adams did more than I expected based on camp reports.
Nat Berhe is a coach killer. So is Valentino Blake.
I would not complain if Bromley has indeed woken up and become
When he was drafted everybody said he needed time to develop, especially at the point of attack. Had he been a 5th Round pick like he was projected we would have been pleased with the result. However we reached and took him in 3rd Round.
Rhett Ellison is a much better receiver than many of us thought.
Rhett Ellison is going to be a stud for us -- he's a terrific 2 way TE -- he and Engram are going to be a huge two hammered punch -- but of the two of them Ellison will have the biggest impact this year
He's going to contribute to the pick your poison on the Giants offense
but if you are a solid pro playing on a line w Snacks JPP and Vernon should be a joy. It's why IMO they let Hankins go. He was good last year but w those three that DT will almost never see a double team.

Ellison has 51 catches in 5 years. I'd put a pin in projecting production from him.

Sure Jon, but would you rather he didn't wake up at all? Getting one good season and a nice 2019 comp pick out of Jay Bromley wouldn't be the end of the world. JB's first three years are history. He's still a Giant, and the better he plays this year, the better off the team will be.

Sometimes you just don't know. He was on a team that simply isn't a passing offense, had an unsettled QB situation, and also playing behind a much better player in Kyle Rudolph. There is only so much production you could have expected by a backup TE on a run-first team.
The argument of "well if he was that good they would find ways to use him" doesn't always apply. Martellus Bennett, for example.
RE: suspect it's more likely he drops off after being paid
that's what often happens with players who suddenly show up in a contract year. If he's legit, he's gone in March but we'll take it for 2017.
Exactly. Hope he plays like Charles Jefferson from FT@RH. When is the last time the Giants re-upped a DT after their rookie contract? Get what they can in 2017.
When Bromley was drafted he was disgusted . Said he will be an absolute bust.
He may not be all world but he certainly won't be a bust.
Again playing w three All Pros helps. Hope he looks all world. Snacks played to many snaps last year as did both DEs. Hope Thomas and Tomlinson look great too because it will be fresher guys down the stretch. The division title was in play before Elliot's suspension. Now the Giants should grab it.
I think Bromley and Goodson are the keys this year
If they struggle the D should be alright but will have some holes. If both are serviceable the D shouldn't miss a beat. If they both end up as plus type players then the defense could be ridiculous.
kind of odd. If it were going to happen you'd expect it sooner. And the Giants obviously didn't see it coming because they went a long ways to sign Hankins and then spent a 2nd round pick on a DT.
Heck, even Snacks only played 5 games his rookie year and didn't record a single stat. His second year was considered inconsistent, then he was a monster starting year 3.
they had a price for his services, and Hankins went shopping. I also think we still take a hard look at Tomlinson even if Bromley was good last year. They do well drafting DTs and if you can keep that up it allows money to be spent elsewhere.
for Hankins for a long time. They had a long term offer out there for him even though they were real tight up against the cap. If they thought there was a good chance that Bromley would step up they wouldn't have been so interested. Nor would they have spent a 2nd round pick on Tomlinson - they could have gotten a DT further down but they were looking for a starter not a project or a back up.

Bromley and Tomlinson are not mutually exclusive since the Giants like to rotate DL and if Bromley developed as hoped he may price himself out of what the Giants want to pay in 2018 and going forward and that would have left them without much at DT

The Giants made a long-term offer to Hankins that was nowhere near what he was asking for. They left it out there because there was really no reason to rescind it, but clearly their attitude was, "This is the offer. Take it or leave it." Luckily for Hankins, although the free agent market had dried up considerably, circumstances beyond their control forced the Colts to go DT shopping late in the game, and they were more than will to meet his price.
What with Bromley and Thomas both entering free agency in 2018, the odds were that the Giants were going to draft another DT anyway (I said as much in several posts prior to the draft). And they weren't going to wait long to draft one, since their pattern has been to get them early, 2nd or 3rd round. Nor were they necessarily looking for a starter - no rookie DT has started for them since Barry Cofield in 2006. It appeared to me that they were looking for a DT who could potentially start down the road, say, in a year or two, and who might be able to contribute in their rotation this year.
If he can make some noise in the pass rush it will put this
defense over the top .
I don't think Kerry Wynn is going anywhere he seems to be developing into a two way player . If he can add some pass rush take all we can get , we all saw what happened when JPP went down . Great to finally see Bromeley possibly coming to age we can't afford more 3rd round busts .
Owa looks like he is not gonna make it at this point either .
Of course I'll take it, just find it annoying the draft resources they invest in DT and none of them are panning out past their rookie deal, except LJ a year too late.
You could say my expectations are probably a bit too high in this regard.

Jon this mentality has been going on since the early 2000s with Cornelius Griffin. Then signing free agent DTs (Fred Robbins, Chris Canty, Snacks). The only real time this mentality bombed was Marvin Austin. They haven't resigned any of those home grown DTs as they look to put the wealth elsewhere
Bromley didn't need a supporting cast last night. He played his best game as a Giant, both physically & mentally. Jay set the tone & made his peers look better, on a number of plays. It was the first time I've seen him rely on his knowledge of the game, as opposed to his physicality.
In a limited role. He played behind two house hold names who were clearly entrenched and established. Bromley has done absolutely nothing wrong his first 2 years and change. You do realize that most 3rd round picks never even pan out at all right? So you're gonna kill bromley and label him as a money hungry player who was lazy early on a guy that can't be counted on long term? Wow. That's fair. Are all these 3rd year wonder boys the same? Glad fatman brought up snacks. You could also bring up dozens of former Giants who peaked year 3 and stayed there for years after. That's usually how good NFL players progress.
Giants might not be able to re-sign an expensive bromley if it should come to that but there are some interesting assumptions and judgments being thrown around here.
I think fans had a hard time understanding Bromley's contributions...
last year. With Hankins locked in as a starter on run downs, Bromley was competing for snaps in a rotation behind him or in obvious passing situations. No surprise that he didn't get a lot of snaps. In his limited snaps (he had ~22% of all defensive snaps) he didn't flash much, but most DT's getting a couple handful of snaps per game don't tend to rack up a bunch of stats.
I think most fans soured on him in his sophomore season when Kuhn seemed to be starting over him, but many probably didn't realize that he led all DT's with over 41% of snaps, and not all the problems with the run defense were his fault. Not starting last year shouldn't be a big problem.
Giants like Bromley, and the announcers seemed to imply that last night's play was not a surprise given the strong camp he's had. This is his year to compete for a starting position.
My point is the same. Bromley could have just needed time to develop and a chance.
I'd still like to see bromley play well before I even worry about signing him long term. My feeling is he emerges as a serviceable decent player and ends up leaving as a FA.
If he steps up this year as a solid contributor then we have a really solid rotation at Defensive Tackle.
God forbid, we have some depth that keeps guys fresh and protects the team should an injury occur to an impact player like Snacks.
Should Bromley reach his potential in a contract year and we lose him to higher market value...oh well. We will enjoy whatever he brings to the table now and the compensatory pick we get when he leaves.
If the other view is we would have never drafted Dalvin Tomlinson and wasted the pick (versus another position of need), well then my answer is WELCOME TO THE NFL....

"Not wise to make sweeping judgements based on a quarter of preseason footbal.."
Yet it's ok to make sweeping statements about a coming off injury Berhe?
And Berhe has not been good now for three years.
And Berhe has not been good now for three years.
It could be 6 years. The point is, it's silly to make ANY sweeping judgements based on a few plays in an initial preseason game

contract year. What a coincidence.
Jay Bromley, raw player when drafted, has possibly made the improvements to be a NFL player.
But I'm sure he's just sat on his ass waiting for that rookie contract to expire.....
Heck, even Snacks only played 5 games his rookie year and didn't record a single stat. His second year was considered inconsistent, then he was a monster starting year 3.
It happens.
Plus, Hankins was drafted a year before Bromley.

In these days of caps, a 4th starting DL making big $$ just isn't in the cards.
I'll take serviceable.

Barry Cofield (who did nothing) for a long time, then he woke up, had one outstanding year and went on to the Redskins, where he did very well.
Plays like Cam Chancellor (6'3", 234); the bad news - he's not.
