We had better scan the waiver wire at safety.

Landon Collins is a STUD. Darian Thompson - if he stays healthy - will be the other starter.

Andrew Adams might be serviceable.

But Nat Berhe just sucks. He was terrible last night.

You are probably right.

What about Pinkins? How did he look?
Berhe's coming back after some shitty injuries
jcn56 : 8/12/2017 10:08 am : link
I wasn't too happy with his performance last night either, but he's shown enough in the past to warrant giving him a pass for that game.
There is still Pinkins
BillT : 8/12/2017 10:09 am : link
And Berhe has been getting good notices in camp. Just a off night?
Berhe
Mike in NY : 8/12/2017 10:09 am : link
Awful in coverage and looks to make the big hit tackling rather than using proper technique. His first stop he played under control and stoned the opposing player. If he would do that more consistently I would be okay with him as 4th S because his style does work on special teams

I agree. He fell once and went high once. He also flew up and made a nice tackle for a minimal gain. I am not worried about his performance. I am concerned about his head with all thkse concussion. Once you get one concussion the likelihood of getting a second increases. I don't know how many he had bjt the one I remember lingered forever.

How did Pinkins play?

He can't afford any off nights.

On a lighter note, I still need to rely on roster sheets every preseason. As usual, I kept murmuring at the TV, "Who the hell is #??!" (Like #43...DaShaun Amos...who sucked rocks last night).

Scan the waiver wire

for Safeties because in limited snaps in his first pre-season game coming off injury, he sucked? Silly
Spags also seems to make the safety position work.
robbieballs2003 : 8/12/2017 10:18 am : link
Who were his safeties his first go 'round? He got Adams ready to play last year. The most talented player he ever had at safety was/is Collins and he was a legit defensive player of the year candidate.

I still think our backup slot corner is more of a concern since DRC does get banged up. You cannot just plug your 4th or 5th corner in at that spot. It is so unique. Don't get me wrong, our top 3 corners are arguably the best in the league and I am a huge DRC fan. Still, if DRC misses some snaps, a game, or more then that is a big hole that needs to be filled. Nothing I saw last night gives me any confidence.

No, because this is his THIRD season and now entering his third season, he was one of the worst players on the field last night.

If Nat Berhe has to start for us this year, hold your breath.

fifth CB and 4th S may not be on the roster, but remember a lot of bad plays are actually the result of miscommunications. We saw that a lot with the backup OL, and I think also in the secondary. Duke I. left the game with a hamstring injury. He might be a viable 4th S.
Not for nothing, both our other two Safeties
Jimmy Googs : 8/12/2017 10:31 am : link
weren't exactly helpful defenders on the Steelers' touchdowns.

I think that was Thompson in the middle of field not offering any help for a deep throw into the end zone.

And Andrew Adams looked like he was running in quicksand to get to the sideline to stop the touchdown run.

Sounds like our practice sessions need to have some more deep throws to OBJ, Marshall and Co. to get these guys to wake up...

It is his 4th season.

will say that the Giants seem less hesitant about cutting draft picks. Reese still gives them every chance to fail, but we are letting them go sooner than we did in the past. Everybody thought Geremy Davis was a lock at WR last year, and he was cut instead. There are also surprise cuts every year. I wouldn't be surprised if Berhe was cut for a veteran.
But he was injured for 2015
robbieballs2003 : 8/12/2017 10:35 am : link
So I understand what you are saying.
When Berhe was drafted
shyster : 8/12/2017 10:36 am : link
this was the commentary at giants.com:

"1. NFL.com scouting report: Compactly built, highly competitive strong safety who flies around the field, though he lacks ideal speed. Has the look of a solid backup and core special-teams player with potential to compete for a more prominent role down the line.

2. A team captain, Berhe led San Diego State in tackles in 2013, starting 13 times at "Aztec" (hybrid safety-linebacker) . . ."

Berhe has been pushed into the cover "free" safety role because the Giants have Collins and, with D Thompson hurt all last year, had a hole at that position. But he has never been suited to that role as an NFL starter.

My recollection is that whenever Tavarres King was making a big play in training camp last year, he was blowing past Berhe.

David B. : 8/12/2017 10:39 am : link
When he wasn't tripping over his own feet, he looked totally lost.

As with Cooper Taylor and "can't-spell-Michael" Thompson, this experiment looks over.
Even when he was drafted
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/12/2017 10:40 am : link
the rap on Berhe was that he was a hitter and a strong safety. Doubt he was ever going to be a cover guy to begin with.

Sure, but he tripped over his own feet on the longest play of the night. His other botched tackle led to another score. If he can't cover or tackle...
Valentino Blake
ChicagoMarty : 8/12/2017 10:46 am : link
did not impress at corner last night. And the little guy Deyon can't hold on to a punt so he needs to go.

Check out the corner battle in Seattle for a waiver claim for out 5th corner if an experienced cb is too expensive
The depth in the secondary is horrible
larryflower37 : 8/12/2017 10:50 am : link
At this point and no one stood out.
I think Adams makes this team and the 4th safety is a late cut veteran.

I was not a big fan of drafting another corner but looking at our depth, we should have.
I think we will sign a vet or 2 before the season starts.
CB is a position that comes off the field often with little injuries.
If I was play this team, I would be drooling as soon as DRC puts his hand up to come off the field
Berhe is another one of those guys who has grown (groan?) as a Giant
Marty in Albany : 8/12/2017 10:58 am : link
At the NFL combine he was 5-10. But as a Giant, he grew and our roster now lists him as a full six feet tall. Is it something in the NJ water?
Berhe is useless and will get hurt
5BowlsSoon : 8/12/2017 10:59 am : link
But we also need to scan the WW for OL guys......of course we already know that.
I thought Pinkins looked dopey

Same as last year. I think he'll be good for a dumb penalty every other week.

I noticed him...when he got flagged for blocking in the back on a return. Other than that, I can't recall.

As for the rest of the Secondary...I thought Hunter looked fine. Not so with Blake or Deayon or Amos.

Collins is awesome, Thompson was okay, and I thought Adams played okay, too, but Berhe looked...I don't know...like he was playing in a fog.
The Giants are too far down the waiver claim pecking order...
Big Blue Blogger : 8/12/2017 11:23 am : link
...to expect much help from that direction. They might fare better with released vets, who are effectively free agents as soon as they are cut.

I'd like to see Ryan Murphy get some more snaps. He has the measurables, and looks like a guy Quinn could use on specials if he's a halfway viable backup at safety.
I wonder
jpennyva : 8/12/2017 11:37 am : link
how crazy the single cut-down day will be this year since all teams are going from 90 to 53 at the same time. The Giants will be cutting some decent players in some positions (TE - who would have thought?) only because there simply isn't room for them on the roster, though hopefully some will stick on the practice squad. Other teams will be doing the same so it's possible the Giants could pick up some serviceable players from other teams. The complicating factor will be whether to have vets on the roster for game one since, IIRC, their contracts are guaranteed if they're on the roster week 1.
What about Duke I. at safety?
No Where Man : 8/12/2017 11:37 am : link

Leon Hall will be back imo after cuts
DennyInDenville : 8/12/2017 11:44 am : link
He played well late last year at safety and even hurt Jordy Nelson on a hard semi clean hit.

I think they save $850,000 in cap room next year if they sign him after Camp.

Imo it's a no brainer to sign a vet with ball skills and talent like Hall, despite his age he got better and better at FS last season. Even took Adams job.
Right Eat a Nacho might be ahead of him
DavidinBMNY : 8/12/2017 12:20 pm : link
There definitely aren't 4 safety locks to make this roster. For more then one reason Behre is on the outside looking in. They'd be best served getting some else who play Free if the get another guy
......
CoughlinHandsonHips : 8/12/2017 12:52 pm : link
Behre also came in a little late with a receiver that was already down. Wouldn't of been surprised if it had been called a PF. Not to mention he continues to unnecessarily throw his body around.

Injuries are hard to get up to par if so many..so 3rd season may seem like 1 or 2 season..Now Bromelynin 3rd season is thank goodness coming around..contractvyear? Maybe why? But still

This + playing a position he is ill-suited for in the NFL and probably college ranks as well = agree with your conclusion.

It will be doing him a favor health and life wise. He had a long time recovery from his last, never a good sign.
Can't rely on Behre either way .
Bluesbreaker : 8/12/2017 5:25 pm : link
Pinkins I think had one tackle don't think he played all that much . I won't doubt they add another vet .
I didn't see Thompson do too much and he needs to stay healthy as well . So Adams is probably 3rd man on the depth chart . Have to see more of Pinkins to see what he can do .

Unlike you to post something like this after just one pre-season game, especially regarding a veteran. I believe Behre is service-able in a pure SS role where he is inside the box and covering short areas. He will likely be exposed in coverage if the QB has any time.

I'm worried about Behre's concussion history moreso than his limitations as a player.
