Snap Counts for Giants players in last night's game

FYI...
Heavy workload for Giants rookie TE Evan Engram in preseason opener | Snap count analysis - ( New Window )
I understand that there are only so many snaps to go around

especially at QB but I don't like the fact that Webb has basically been holding his jock strap in practice. Josh Johnson looked horrendous. Geno Smith showed some good stuff in his first game action in a new offense.

But did either of those guys look that much better than Webb? I will give Geno the edge over Webb but Johnson was horrible. I wish there were more snaps to go around for Webb to truly compete for that backup QB spot. Webb had some jitters early on but started to settle down. He started making better throws. You can tell this kid just needs reps which he isn't really getting. That makes it all the more impressive cor how he is progressing.
Johnson was absolutely terrible
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/12/2017 10:45 am : link
But at least now that he's played against live competition, they can know that. Certainly nobody here had any understanding of what Johnson is before last night. It probably answered some questions for the coaches.

There's plenty of time for Webb to get work going forward.

Couldn't agree more. I've said as much, myself.
Webb with not be #2
AnnapolisMike : 8/12/2017 10:50 am : link
The Giants will make due with the better of Johnson/Smith as #2. They have said as much and Webb is not getting the practice reps. If Eli were to go down...you want someone with NFL experience to be able to step in and fill in the void temporarily. That's it. McAdoo is doing the right thing and essentially redshirting Webb.
I think anyone who has watched johnson over last 7
bhill410 : 8/12/2017 10:50 am : link
Years knew he was horrible. Not entirely sure why that would be a shocker to fans or coaches. Fact is they are keeping 3 qbs based on the snap counts and the amount of practice time they are giving geno/johnson compared to Davis. And I am fine with that, I would rather have Geno out there if all hell breaks loose than Davis. This team is talented enough to win with Geno (heck the Jets managed a couple Ws with him).
Imo, there is zero reason for Johnson to be getting as many reps
robbieballs2003 : 8/12/2017 11:10 am : link
as he is getting. He has not gotten better. Those reps would be better served for Webb.

The whole vet thing is old school. This is a different NFL. Wentz was raw coming in not having played against gokd competition amd succeeds. Trubisky, Kizer, Watson all had flaws entering the NFL and all looked pretty damn good in their first game. Mariota and Winston played well as rookies. This is a different NFL. If Eli misses time Josh Johnson has provem time and time again that he is not up to the challenge.

Let Geno and Webb battle it out. There is upside with Geno. So, if he looks the part then keep him and Webb. But, god forbid that Webb actually looks good then why not go with him? Other teams are going with rookie QBs starting but we are automatically writing off Webb because of some theoretical perception that backup QBs need to have experience? That is silly, imo. Rookie, no rookie, if a guy proves to win the job then let him have it. Webb looked much better than Johnson last night. I am not saying to cut Johnson right now. All I am saying is that Webb earned more snaps in practice and Johnson didn't.
Carr is another example of a rookie with question marks
robbieballs2003 : 8/12/2017 11:12 am : link
coming from an air raid system that played extremely well as a rookie.
What was foolish from the start were the comments
Jimmy Googs : 8/12/2017 11:16 am : link
that Webb was the de facto #3 and the other guys were fighting for the back up job.

Now lets take it easy on how good Webb looked like last night as he has plenty of growing pains ahead of him.

But it makes no sense to have him standing around when he clearly seems to be "getting" the position. Johnson is a waste of time and Geno isn't so far ahead of Webb based on last night...

I don't think anybody is saying Webb looked like Aaron Rodgers out there. All I did was compare Webb tl the other Giants QBs. He looked much better than Johnson and Johnson has been getting a ton of reps in practice whereas we keep reading that Webb is barely mixing in. If Webb is looking better than Johnson with barely any reps in camp then how good would he look if he was getting more reps? That was all that I said.
I said the same thing
Jimmy Googs : 8/12/2017 11:36 am : link
as in i agree with you robbie

I was just saying that I didn't see anybody write anything that said Webb looked great last night.

I know. I wrote the line to cover myself from those who would point to Webb played 1/2 of a 4th qtr in one preseason game :-)
Gotcha.
robbieballs2003 : 8/12/2017 11:47 am : link
Lol.
Did Webb take any snaps from
Simms11 : 8/12/2017 3:44 pm : link
under Center last night? He might be still a work in progress coming from the offense he did in college. That is where Smith would have a leg up on him.
I don't have a problem saying Webb was de facto #3
Mike in NY : 8/12/2017 3:46 pm : link
No need to pressure him to be an NFL back-up as a rookie. If he performed at that level great, but don't make it a requirement
Well, I have a problem with it. There is no secret sauce to develop
Jimmy Googs : 8/12/2017 5:49 pm : link
a QB. Sometimes guys with great pedigrees and plenty of time to acclimate still never develop, even at all. Other times, guys with lesser resumes step in and show they have the right makeup. And plenty of examples in between.

My point isn't to rush him needlessly. Its that I don't believe at all in Johnson and Geno to make a bit of difference if they had to play. And if the backups are going to struggle (within reason), I would much rather it be Webb learning the trade versus two guys that likely look to be out of the NFL fairly soon.

Mostly, I want Webb to have summer with a "bountiful number of reps" even if he doesn't play a down in the regular season. That way he is that much further along next year.

The extra roster spot is just gravy...
We all agree
Dave on the UWS : 8/12/2017 6:20 pm : link
It was obvious last night. But giving Webb a "shot" to earn the #2 spot would be a MAJOR change in plans for Mac and I don't see him being that flexible.
This is not my area of expertise at all...
Milton : 8/12/2017 7:01 pm : link
But Webb looked to me to have very poor mechanics. Most of his passes seemed to be off his back foot and he was inaccurate by a wide margin with his first throw (an intermediate range, over the middle throw, in which that kind of inaccuracy can result in an easy INT, not to mention a bone-crushing hit on the receiver).

That being said, Johnson was awful and Smith was inconsistent at best. I'll give Smith a "pass" because the system is new to him and he is coming off an ACL which has limited his reps.

Johnson has been around while but I'd hardly call him
Experienced. Smith if you go w a vet Guy But If it was between Johnson and Webb I'd roll The dice w Webb after watching the game
