some observations from last night

A few observations from the game last night

LB Calvin Munson- he took a lot of snaps at MLB and played well. His reaction to plays was good and tackling was solid. He was on a large number of special teams and contributed. In the 2nd half he made a nice tackle and a Steeler lineman fell on his leg late on the play. He seemed hurt, but the D had stopped Pittsburgh on this 3rd down play and they punted. On the next defensive series, Munson was back out there. Munson got a huge amount of snaps last night

LB Deontae Skinner- he also got a ton of snaps last night including specials. His reaction to plays is fast, but his tackling could be better. He had one real nice tackle on a special teams play

OT Chad Wheeler- I have seen some comments this morning that he had a bad game, but I would strongly disagree. Did he get burnt twice? Yes. Once by Watt and once by Moats, but otherwise his pass blocking and run blocking were very good. He sets up well and controlled the man in front of him throughout plays. Comparing Wheeler to Bisnowaty-it’s one game, but hands down I would keep Wheeler over Bisnowaty.

CB Michael Hunter- he saw the most action of any DB. Like Wheeler, he had two plays with lapses, but overall looked good to me. He is a big corner.

C Jon Halapio- I was surprised at how much time Halapio got at center. Like his ability to anchor. With linemen, size matters, and I just can’t ever come away impressed with Jones or Gettis. I think Jones and Gettis both give great effort, but just lack the size needed for the position in today’s NFL. The QB pressure we saw in the 2nd half was from the edges and not up the middle. Halapio looked good at center.

DB Donte Deayon- I am still not there with Deayon. For a player that small, you need something really special- speed?, burst? quickness? I don’t see anything with Deayon that stands out to overcome his size issue

WR Travis Rudolph- he made a couple of nice plays, but his best chance to make the team would be as a punt returner, and his hesitation on returns was obvious. There is a special skill to returning punts, and I just didn’t see it.

WR Keeon Johnson- he impressed me the most of new receivers. What I liked best was what he does once he catches the ball. Instantly upfield and with natural quickness and elusive.

WR Jerome Lane- he didn’t get in until very late, but he is a big target that made a few plays. Worth seeing more

S- Eric Pinkins- I was surprised at how late in the game it was before he entered. He was at free safety when he got in.

DE Jordan Williams- we haven’t heard much about Williams, other than that he has been working as a backup long snapper. He impressed me that he played both inside and outside along the line and that he made plays at both.

DE Devin Taylor- On a 3rd down passing situation, he dropped back into coverage and made a nice interception. That’s the play people will talk about, but what I really liked was the effort. On a running player a Steeler back had room to run and after about a 15 yard gain, he was caught from behind by a hustling Taylor. Nice to see that effort.

DT Dalvin Tomlinson- he got a lot of snaps and impressed. Of all the 6 draft picks on the field last night, Tomlinson looked the best, especially clogging the middle on running plays.

QB Davis Webb- I was very unimpressed with Josh Johnson last night, so it was refreshing to see Webb get in with 7:32 left in the game. The Giants had 10 players on the field after a break and when play was about to resume, Webb ran from the sidelines and joined his teammates. I thought it was interesting that the first person to greet him was the Back Judge, who shook his hand and seemed to be welcoming him to the NFL. Webb showed a very strong arm, but also some nerves with some high throws, and one off his back leg. I really hope we see more Webb and less Johnson over the next 3 preseason games.

Really impressed with Tomlinson

That was great to see. I feel like he kind of gets overlooked between Engram and Webb, but the Giants may have hit on another second rounder.
Munson and/or Skinner

should be on this team in place of you know who...

Also glad someone else mentioned Jordan Williams and not just because of that gimme sack. That said, I don't see a path for him.
Anybody surprised at Deayon and that muffed punt

He looked kind of shaky on the first couple tries too but held on. I assume Harris has this job and they are just looking for backups?

Hunter probably wins the 4th CB by default as the other backups are kind of lost.

Nice work by both Bromley and Tomlinson...Hankins who?

Johnson needs a pink slip in his locker today...

Agree
ChicagoMarty : 8/12/2017 11:46 am : link
with your comments on Taylor and Tomlinson.

Bromley played well at DT also. I think the Jints are well stocked all along the DL starters and depth wise.

I don't feel the same about the OL but it is early and OL takes a bit longer to get their timing down.

Saw some nice TE blocking for the first time in a long time for Jints

PK looks solid.

Who is going to return kicks? Hopefully not Rudolf or Deayon
Good call on Keeon Johnson.

I said in another thread that I had him going to the PS in my initial roster projection, but that was due primarily to the numbers game. I honestly don't know much about him, but guys with his size and athleticism don't come around too often. I'd like to see him get more snaps, along with Darius Powe.
I disagree on Rudolph.

Fumbling was very bad. Looked explosive on every play though. I think we may have a player.
I didn't see the game last night

I was disappointed by all the comments about how Wheeler played. When I watched the game this morning I have to say that he played better than I expected from the comments. He did struggle for a couple of plays but other than than he was pretty solid in both phases of the game. He had some nice blocks while run blocking and he got to the second level with ease on a couple of them. He looks much farther along than Bisnowaty.
as the back up tackles go

i was unimpressed with bis and wheeler. Jones acctually looked better the I would have expected and impressed me most of the rookie lineman

Wheeler was slow of the ball and getting his hands up. ended up swinging his arms more then punching, he is gonna whiff or hold way too much.

Bis almost looked to jump the snap he stepped back so quickly, and he did real bad o his penalty. its almost like a tip off to it being a pass and then he stayed flat footed or got pushed back.
Wheeler needs a year in an NFL weiight room

He has the quickness to play LT I in the NFL based on last night. But when he had problems it was because he was outmuscled. Whether it's on the practice squad or the bench as a reserve he needs a year.

Agree, Johnson is taking up space and snaps that should go to Smith and Webb.

reports. Thanks for doing them. And While I disagree today I will still look forward to your posts.

Now I will disagree on a few:

1.) Wheeler - looked terrible. It wasn't two plays he was bad on, it was several. I see what Sy was saying. Bisnowaty was slightly better. No big deal they are "undersized" rookies and should get better when they get more adult muscle.

2.) Skinner - Skinner was awful. Missed tackles left and right. One of the few players I thought was bad.

3.)Thought Rudolph was better than you thought, but not by much. Yes the fumble was bad. Yes he was a bit hesitant early but got more instinctive later. I thought he was open more than shown as WR. Initially, he will not make the team. But he is destined to make it by next year. He has NFL talent, just needs some size.

But I agree with the rest pretty much.

I agree Bis looked much better then Wheeler. I focused on Tomlinson and Bisnowaty. Bis needs some development but he outplayed Wheeler by a lot. Tomlinson looked pretty damn good. With additional snaps he will be ready for the Cowboys.

I kept saying to myself, "Who the hell is number 53? This guy blows." Yup, it was Skinner.
Wheeler belongs, I think he sticks
JonC : 8/12/2017 5:25 pm : link
and develops into a plus LT in the NFL, the tools and awareness are there. He got better as the reps increased last night.
Randolph

It's obvious that they like him. They want him to make the team. But, he was "just running around out there," as Parcells was prone to say about clueless , young receivers . Wheeler will play in the NFL for some undetermined amount of time . There simply aren't that many guys his size walking around on this planet . How much and how well remains to be seen. My guess is he will eventually start.

Regarding the people whom they will need right away, I was really concerned with a couple of bad fills that Goodson had against pretty vanilla blocking schemes. Sheppard last season was actually very strong in that department . Tomlinson and Bromley both played well. They will need both to take substantial snaps each game.

If they take an injury at corner, and usually those guys will miss at least A portion of the season , they look to be screwed at four and five.

Something happens to Eli, it's Geno. Johnson plays like Gary Wood. Darkwa is probably the best composite back on the team. Gallman plays small. He's not running against Syracuse-sized defenders , anymore . To me that one is any easy call.

Nobody played for the Steelers last night to truly test the first unit D. Regardless should be a strong , deep defensive line .

Nugent's ball is lazier than it used to be. He's still prone to the hook so the PK choice should also be a breeze.

Favorite new player: Ellison .
Wheeler just needs to keep his feet moving
JonC : 8/12/2017 5:29 pm : link
when he does, he's fine. Remember he came from an OL factory at USC with the size and pedigree for the NFL.
Mostly agree...
Dan in the Springs : 8/13/2017 12:27 am : link
my first impression was that I was pleased with Wheeler given his pedigree as UDFA rookie, but he was beat both with speed at times and by the bull-rush. On the bad snap/sack he was bull-rushed and collapsed over Geno. I thought Bisnowaty looked better.

Was pleased with Skinner as well. He got a lot of playing time and had a very good bull rush on when Taylor got the INT.

Owa was invisible for the most part. He's got to be considered done, imo.

Really agreed with your take on almost everyone. I'm rooting for Deayon, even though he looks too small for a community college team. He got a ton of snaps and I never saw him out of place. I'm not sure if Game Pass will give an all-22 camera angle at some point this week, but if it does, I'm going to really key on Deayon.

I was also disappointed that Pinkins didn't get too many snaps as I've been hoping to see something from him. I'm not a fan of Berhe. He's a hard hitter, but he's one concussion away from early retirement imo, and also didn't seem too impressive from the little I could evaluate from my tv.
Really impressed with YANKEE28,
