with Eli.
I don't think we are going to surprise anyone running him down the seam.
It will be more of "you know it's coming now try and stop it" attitude
If he is any good, he will learn to defeat the defenses used to stop him.
Just as wolves improve the deer population, good defensive opponents will winnow out our poorer offensive players. Having the Cowboys know what they are up against in Engram is (long term) as good for us as it is for them.
Once Eli steps on the field, I think it would be useful
Dallas can watch film 24/7 ... Film study doesn't change the fact that the Giants now have someone running up the seam who is athletically superior to some of the best WRs in football
oh, and we have 1 of the best WRs in football too. I'm sure last night's "game plan" was about as vanilla as it gets and just about getting guys reps/into football shape.
i expect a more diverse set of play cals - especially with Eli in the game - but maybe they don't show their full bag o' tricks with Engram. i expect him lined up all over the field once the games matter.
Regardless of what they show, I'm sure Dallas is preparing to see Engram go downfield when they play
The best thing to happen is for Dallas and everyone else on our schedule worrying about Engram blowing past everyone in the middle of the field.
Let the FS hesitate for a second and Beckham and Marshall will crush single coverage on the outside
Whitten over the years. Especially the Giants. If he's as advertised he will be running that pattern for years. Teams will certainly be on the lookout for
It. Issue is a OBJ Marshall and Sheppard with just average OL play good luck stopping him. This offense could be very dominant. They mix
In some better running and play action w that route will be awesome
If I'm gameplanning to defend EE in his first career game
I'm ideally being as physical with him as possible. Not that he can't take it but of course let him prove it. Hit him hard when he's inline, physical off the line for 5 yds, physical when he's trying to block etc
Of course on routes after 5 yds the rules all lean to our guy and to this point that's been his strength - receptions over the middle & down the seam. That with his big size/speed over LBs/CBs/Ss. Anything can happen but he looks to be a tough cover even before looking at the other weapons in the mix
but NYG/Eli counter by getting the ball out quick. So you still have to defend receivers off the line. That aside from plays you don't end up getting to the QB quickly
I was thinking about this the other day. I have no problem no problem taking a vanilla approach with Engram in the preseason. No point giving the opposition something to prepare for when the real bullets fly.
Honestly what purpose would it serve? Who cares if Engram lights up the preseason? Just stay healthy.
They didn't "plan" anything for him in that Texans game, either. It was a basic play and he just had some blocking and used his speed to get past them and bowl over that small DB. I'm not sure Engram had any more than two targets.
Engram needs some in game experience I agree somewhat with
the Witten philosophy . Give Dallas something to think about playing there safeties up in stopping the run which
is another show me item on the list .
I'd blitz early and often to try to take advantage of the Giants biggest weakness - the o-line.
it's a no brainer when you think about it ... not only is this OL a weakness, but it's going to be tough (if not impossible) to actually cover the Giants weapons.
Rush 5+ defenders and pray for a sack or tipped ball/INT - otherwise who is actually covering Marshall 1 on 1, Shepard in the slot, Odell/Engram wherever they line up? No one.
Many of the advantages to hiding Engram have been listed in this thread. But on the other hand, a big reason for bringing in Marshall and drafting Engram was to break the cover-2 defense and double teams of OBJ. If teams see Engram and Marshall as big threats now, it puts them into match-up nightmare scenarios that most teams probably don't have an answer for.
I don't think we are going to surprise anyone running him down the seam.

Exactly. McAdoo needs to be able to counter that.

Eli in the shotgun and quick-hit slants to OBJ or Shepard.
