I focused on the TEs last night

Here are my thoughts:

Ellison - Head and shoulders the most effective blocker of the group, particularly with respect to consistency. Actually pushed the DE off the LOS on more than one occasion. Solid route runner, but does not excel. Based on last night the clear #1.

Engram - Runs patterns like a WR, though he had some problems breaking away from tight coverage. A willing blocker, but right now he's more getting in someone's way rather than driving him back. I could see him being the best receiver in the group by midseason by will not get close to Ellison's blocking.

Adams- The most inconsistent blocker in the group, which is both good and bad. Only one besides Ellison that drove a defender back from the line but was also the only one who actually missed a block completely.

Tye and Lacosse - Thought they were about the same. Tye a slightly better blocker nd LaCosse a slightly better route runner. Neither is in Ellison or Engrams class.
Really excited about Engram

I think his 'floor' is a lot higher than draft reports made him out to be. He did not look out of place out there when asked to block.
Adams shows more promise than Tye or LaCosse

He is a willing blocker and even when he doesn't make his block perfectly his size works for him and helps him get the job done (even when not pretty).

Not pretty? That's just not accurate -- he absolutely wiffed on a block and our back was hit in the backfield for a loss last night.

was the first real action these guys have seen in months. There's going to be some whiffs. Preseason 1, it's to be expected. Why do you think most coaches don't play their starting qbs? Many on these boards need to relax with the over analysis. Let the preseason play out. Build off the positive plays, and start eliminating the mistakes.
Engram
Mr. Nickels : 8/12/2017 4:40 pm : link
looked a lot bigger than I thought he would look especially lower body

Quit on the route that Geno threw an interception or ran the wrong route. I know it's just the first pre-season game, and agree unless LaCosse becomes unbreakable he's not making this team over Tye if they keep 4 TE's
I never said he didn't wiff on that block.

He is a willing blocker, will get better, and his size helps.
I think we might end up keeping
Phil in LA : 8/12/2017 5:19 pm : link
the FB instead of a 4th TE.
Tye has a FB fight on his hands

.
We've seen this story from our te's

last year -- and Adams was one of the culprits, so I refuse to give them much slack (tye) -- Ellison, who is brand new to this offense, was outstanding so the first game stuff is overblown.
Good points Phil in LA & JonC re: the 4th TE and FB
Optimus-NY : 8/12/2017 5:30 pm : link
The FB, Shane Smith, looked better than the Giants' options for the 4th TE slot (e.g., Tye and LaCosse). Smith looked good catching th ball out of the backfield too.
