I would give the slight edge to Judge. Sure he is in a slump but I am sure he will get through it as Conforto has gone through a few slumps of his own. Conforto is going to be an excellent outfield and he will be in several all-star games but Judge's power is just incredible.
At all. "Prime David Wright" is a much better example. In fact, Conforto might top Wright's best year this year offensively with a little luck.
I'll take your word for it man. You watch the games and follow the Mets.
I'd still pick Judge. They are both very good young players. Can't go wrong with either but I LOVE Judge. Just hope he doesn't flame out a young age like I'm thinking. He's needs an Ichiro like stretching regime.
RE: As a Mets fan, I don't really think Conforto had much hype coming up
Certainly nowhere near as brightly as Rosario's star has shined.
Hell, I remember when he was first promoted in 2015, we were all told he was a defensive butcher. Apparently nobody even scouted him correctly.
That's what everyone got wrong. Go back to the draft reports and almost everyone was unanimously calling him at least the best "college bat in the draft". Where everyone got it wrong was his defense. He was expected to be awful. Law said he would only be able to stick in LF. Not only has he been excellent defensively in both corners, he's only a hair below average in CF. He's also exceeded his power projections. Most thought 20-25. He's more 30-35.
I've been supremely impressed with the adjustments that Conforto made. In May, he had a slump and it looked as if this year could take the same turn as last year -- when a huge slump after a hot start sent him back to AAA.
But he really found the answers to his issues and has become an all-fields threat (9 of 25 HR to the left of CF).
That being said, I think Judge obviously has the higher ceiling as a once in a generation talent.
The "knock" on Judge vs Conforto that I would have in taking one or the other is that Judge is 280 lbs. I think he's going to take a beating playing RF everyday year after year. So I think I'd stick with Conforto if I had to choose one for the NL.
Think Judge is massively entertaining as well as being a great player. Really hope that both kids have long, healthy careers.
Judge is having a sick year by any standard but this certainly isn't the norm for him. If he can get his Ks under control then he could be one of the most dominant power hitters in the game. But high Ks has always been his wart.
I do think that Conforto is the more polished hitter and his track record backs that up. He doesn't have the dominant power that Judge has but is still powerful in his own right. Conforto was pretty dominant and consistent in the minors. Less consistent when he started off his pro career (and he had to deal with the idiot Terry Collins screwing him up) but he's rounding into a damn good player.
It's way too early to answer the question of who will have the better career. The media did the same thing with Sanchez last season. Let's wait a while to see exactly what Judge is before this discussion can hold any weight. Either way, both are/should be corner stones for each franchise if we are lucky.
No it's not a good comparison. Conforto is better than a young Jay Bruce.
Yes, Conforto can strike out too. Conforto has 101 Ks in 98 games versus Judge with 152 Ks in 111 games. But I guess Conforto can improve on that too, right?

Look at the start of Bruce's career, and if you remember, he was thought of a hitter that was going to take next step into a great all around hitter. Didn't happen. And it is not a knock on Conforto to be compared to a young Jay Bruce. Career arc, long term, I am not comparing. I am saying it's a valid current comparison.
their maximum potential I would say Judge has the better career. However that is a big if and Conforto could easily end up having the better career.
It would be great for both teams if we are still asking this question five years out, or better yet debating the answer ten years from now.
But see, my point is that we are basing Judge's potential off a hot first half. That's it. And it's nothing to sneeze at either. But It's not close to what he did in the minors nor what he did when he was called up last season (which is normal). You'd think everyone would have learned after anointing Sanchez as the next Babe Ruth after his first 50+ games last season.
I do agree and have been saying that it's way too early to have this conversation. Hopefully both live up to expectations.
since the last time Judge slumped and disappeared when he was tearing the cover off the ball. I look forward to these threads completely disappearing once Judge bounces back..which will happen..again.
threads about the absolute awesomeness that is Aaron Judge and the comparison comes up a lot. And almost always when Judge is mashing. Not sure I understand your point. The OP doesn't even state an opinion on either player. Just a question. Weird to be so defensive about it.
first half of his first full major league season he could only be compared with players like Babe Ruth or Barry Bonds.
because he's slumped in the 2nd half (which is only 27 games old) people maybe realize that pace was ridiculous to expect to continue and maybe now it's a more realistic discussion about who will have the better career when before it was a one-sided conversation.
At least not on Yankees' threads. I recall seeing one other Conforto/Judge thread, and it was also started by a Mets fan when Judge was in a slump. I mean, nothing wrong with preferring the player on your team at all. The timing is just quite funny. Anyway, the last time this thread was created Judge happened to snap out of it somewhat quickly after that, so let's hope that happens again.
Where are all of these comparison threads between the Mets and Yankees? I must be missing them.
Not sure if this was directed at me but it's been discussed in threads (normally threads started about Judge) multiple times this season. By fans of both teams. Really though, don't know why some get so defensive about it. It can be a fun conversation if people are realistic and don't get all butthurt about it.
I honestly haven't seen it discussed 'multiple times'
in Judge threads. 99% of Judge threads are posted in by Yankees fans. And it certainly isn't Yankee fans comparing Conforto to Judge. We don't even think about him until a Mets fan, for some odd reason, decides to compare the two. *shrug*

No, no - supposedly it's always Mets fans who are starting comparisons according to Dave. I'm just struggling to even remember a whole lot of comparing going on between the teams. I guess I just don't care enough.
But yeah, the two players have been compared a ton - for good reason. Obviously Yankee fans can't be bothered to think about anything Mets related though (but suddenly care about the comparison if it's not happening in the midst of Judge being on a hot streak).
to call Judge a perennial MVP candidate or expect that level. He already has seriously damaged his chance at this year's MVP. How could anyone expect a career like the first half of the season, when he has no resume to back that up yet?

Yankee fans are weird.
I responded to someone else's post. Believe me, if this thread wasn't started, there would be zero mention of it.
I would say the fanbase that is always trying to compare their team/players to the other team is the more odd one, but whatever.
Oh god. Get over yourself with this whole "us Yankee fans can't be bothered to think about anything Mets related" nonsense. If you follow NY baseball even casually, you know who both players are regardless of allegiance and it's a comparison that people are going to make.
Just odd that fans of a certain team feel the need to compare their player to a player on another team.
Like even when Judge was mashing; was my first thought to start a comparison thread between Judge and Coforto? Um...no. When Judge was mashing, Mets players were the last thing on my mind. Just...odd. Those comparisons were mostly dead when Judge was mashing.
Just odd that fans of a certain team feel the need to compare their player to a player on another team.
How long have you been following sports? Player comps have been made by fans for about 100 years now. It's actually the complete opposite of "odd" - it's something fans, analysts, and scouts all do and have been doing forever.
How hard would it have been to say "both players look like they're going to have very good careers.. I'd prefer Judge long-term" ?
Instead, you'd rather keep wearing that superiority complex like a badge around here.
made comparisons with players from other teams. Probably a lot, like every baseball fan. So it's best to just leave this deluded fan to himself. It's not even worth debating with such hypocrisy.
Actually, there's nothing "odd" about comparing two young players in the midst of breakout seasons in the same city who play the same position.
If the Giants and Jets both had 1st/2nd year QB's having great seasons, you'd find it strange for people to compare the two? You'd pretty much be on your own there.
to a Mets player. The funny thing is, even with Judge's huge slump since the All Star Break, he still leads Conforto in every statistical average outside of BA. They're not even extremely similar players. If they were mirror images (or at least near mirror images of one another), I'd get it more. Meh. Whatever.
He was incredible before the all star break and now he's in a horrible slump. We'll have a better idea of what kind of hitter he really is after this season or next season and then the comparisons will make sense.
Apparently Judge is already an annual .300/40+ HR/100 RBI/100 walk player (even though he's yet to even play a full season and came nowhere close to that last season or in the minors) and Conforto's ceiling is Adam Jones with a worse glove. Never mind that Conforto is a fantastic defensive player and he's already better than Adam Jones ever was. Really riveting stuff from these guys.
Yeesh, hope the meds are good over there in Yankee land. Now they will probably just cry that I'm stalking Yankee threads, blah blah blah. They can't be bothered with talking about Conforto/Judge comparisons and then promplty continue to discuss Conforto/Judge through their entire game thread. Huh. *shrug*

Lol. Still stalking me in another thread, psycho?
I said Judge COULD be that kind of player. He's still a rookie, you goddamned nut.
Let's compare Cody Bellinger and Mike Stanton while we're at it... who's going to have the better career?
thread either, right psycho? I mean, it only took you four minutes to check, read and write a response.
Anyway, it's a relevant question and comparison between to young, exciting players that look to be bigtime players in the same market. And regardless of a Yankee fan's ASSUMPTION of the intent of the opening post, it was a cordial conversation until a Yankee fan had to piss in everyone's cheerios because Mets fans dared to compare another player to the mighty Aaron Judge. Lol, Mets fans were even praising the guy. But this is usually how it goes all the time. Went through it last year with Sanchez. Same thing this year with Judge.
Seriously, who the fuck cares if Mets fans compare the two and have a completely realistic and cordial conversation with other rational Mets and Yankee fans. Does it really eat you up that much? Good lord, you have issues if it does.
Oh, okay - I guess you're the authority here. Judge's stats count when he's white hot but not when he's marred in a slump. Obviously the real player is just the one that's on fire.

You've really participated in this thread...good story.
Now you can go back to consuming your game thread talking about a player you guys couldn't care less to ever talk about while you obsessively checking back to this one to see what people post. You sound well rounded.

Yawn...you bitch and whine like a 12 year old girl on this and
every other thread you "participate" in. Go to bed youngster and let the adults talk. At least you'll be able to stare up at the Aaron Judge hall of fame poster taped to your ceiling.
What hype? Conforto is already performing at a higher level than any "hype" that surrounded him
Comparing him to Judge is kind of hyping him up. So that's what i mean by hype.
Wasn't Judge the 32nd pick in his draft? Conforto was top 10 and cited by some as the best bat in the whole draft... certainly the most polished. Don't really see how comparing him to Judge is "hyping him up".
Why would you even entertain the brain droppings of Denny? He's a teen troll.
I'll take your word for it man. You watch the games and follow the Mets.
