that developed around the All-Star game. He lost a small but essential part of his capacity to stay closed long enough. Flying open by a tiny 3-6 extra inches is apparently a very big deal for him. He also has to get back to laying off the pitches that break down and away, to outside the strike zone, from right-handed pitchers. If they succeed, then Judge. I believe this stuff is fixable.
came up at the same time and were compared ad nauseam.
"Here’s one: The day before Jeter’s fabled first Opening Day in Cleveland, 1996, when he made a stunning catch and hit a key home run by way of introduction, the Mets unveiled their own shortstop of the future, and Rey Ordonez made an immediate impact, a relay throw that nailed a Cardinals runner at the plate, a spectacular play you still see on scoreboard videos 18 years later.
Joe Torre was moved to say, laughing: “It could be really special. I can see them doing a commercial together. Only in New York.” Jeter himself admitted, “Rey and I are good friends and I saw his play on ‘SportsCenter.’ But I didn’t say, ‘OK, Rey had a good game so I have to have a good game.”"
"PORT ST. LUCIE — The best time to hold this debate might very well be now, when we can envision Subway Series and Big Apple-centric All-Star Games pitting Amed Rosario against Gleyber Torres. Reality tends to bite into these fantasies.
Anyone remember when we sincerely wondered whether Derek Jeter or Rey Ordonez would have the better career?"
Worse then Dunn. Judge may become the next Shane Spencer at this rate. He s about to break Dunns record for most consecutive games with a strikeout...All rise for Adam Dunn??? A little too much too soon for the strikeout king.

Adam Dunn was one of the most consistent hitters in MLB history (my opinion), I'm not saying great hitters, but consistent, look up Dunn's stats, it's uncanny.
I know Yankees fans have higher hopes for Judge, but if Judge lasts 14 years like Dunn did and puts up those stats, that's a win IMO.
When Judge first game up Adam Dunn was who I envisioned Â
He would be. Tall players (sans frank Thomas) generally end up with holes in their swing simply as a result of their size. That being said adam Dunn never had a half a season like judge.
That being said I will say that judges best year will be better than confortos but I think conforto will be more stable.
Surprised this thread didn't turn into a fight already. I think both are going to be absolute studs. Judge will probably be the better power bat but Conforto looks like a guy who has a shot at being a .300/30 type of player which I'd be absolutely thrilled with.
I could see Conforto being a lot like prime David Wright.
Both players are hopefully going to be great. I wouldn't trade Judge for very many players in baseball. We've seen what he's capable of. He's in a bad funk right now. Now it's just a matter of if and when he can find it again.

Yep. And when Judge is hot, I don't think there are many players in the league that can touch him. I think he's the bigger star, as well.
I'm a Yankee fan, but my honest view is Conforto. I think k he has a more natural swing and talent. I really like Judge, but I recognized even when he was white hot earlier that he was striking out nearly every game. He has a bit of a hole in his swing.
I love that he plays so hard. I dont think he's as bad as he looked last year or the last month. But, I also don't think he will be as simple of as he looked in the first half. He should fall somewhere in the middle, which can be a very good player.
Conforto is a year younger and seems to have a better approach so Ill at least list those.
Judge is still having the better year by a hair although those numbers are on the precipice of converging. (OPS)
It will be interesting to see how quickly Judge can come out of his current slump.
Another benefit with Conforto is the league adjusted and he adjusted back already..something Judge is still yet to experience.
Pitchers didn't adjust to Judge. He's missing balls in the middle of the plate that he was destroying earlier. He's also chasing pitches out of the zone that he was being praised for laying off in the first half. He's opening up his hips and got pull happy. This is all on Judge, pitchers aren't pitching him any differently. They were talking about it during yesterday's game, I missed some of it but the numbers were something like, in the fist half, fastballs that were in a certain location in the zone (I missed exactly which part) Judge had an OPS over 1.100. In the second half, those same pitches he's under .700.

I wasn't necessarily referring to what is happening now. Im saying the league DID adjust to Conforto and he had to adjust back. This at one point will happen to every player. So maybe it hasn't happened yet with Judge but I still think he will have to go through it eventually. It comes with experience.
thing but it was more when they were still prospects. I don't think anyone legitimately compared them when they were in the majors.
Maybe not where you lived but everybody my me did whether it was home or at college. The argument was always that Jeter makes a couple of spectacular plays but would fuck up the routine plays whereas Ordonez was a much better field. It was just typical Mets Yankees banter where the Mets fans were just defending their guy.
Said it wasn't possible. It just didn't happen in my circles. I actually think there was a "future SS prospect card at one point that had Jeter, A Rod, Nomar, and Ordonez on it... maybe I'm mis remembering though.
ever expected to hit? From what I remember he was always viewed as a slick fielding light hitting SS.
and it's exactly what he was, I can name on one hand the better fielding SS's I've seen in my life than Ordonez.
So my comment about not remember Ordonez vs Jeter was simply my recollection, I wasn't disputing those arguments happened, especially then when there was less known about prospects as they came up to the majors.
But I feel as though he will peak around age 28 then quickly fade to a Dunn like hitter DHing a lot.
Once Judge gets a chronic Hammy, or a Knee it's downhill for him in RF.
Hate to say that.
Conforto might age much better. But best case for Conforto is another Jay Bruce in a few years once he fills out more and gets a few years of wear and tear on him. He could lose his above average range. I'll admit I've only seen maybe 100 Conforto ABs/Plays all season though.
Both are good players, both will be fading by age 30 imo.
What hype? Conforto is already performing at a higher level than any "hype" that surrounded him
Comparing him to Judge is kind of hyping him up. So that's what i mean by hype.
Wasn't Judge the 32nd pick in his draft? Conforto was top 10 and cited by some as the best bat in the whole draft... certainly the most polished. Don't really see how comparing him to Judge is "hyping him up".
I don't remember Ordonez vs Jeter, but I do remember in 2006 arguing with my father, a diehard Yankees fan, about Reyes vs Jeter.
I didn't even really think it was close and that Reyes was going to be among the best ever.
So, I'll stay out of this one.
Give me Judge. You can't teach what he brings.

...until he fucked up his swing at the All-Star break.

It would be really good for NY baseball
100%. This absolutely was a debate and a very annoying one.
I could see Conforto being a lot like prime David Wright.
Hard not to be excited about both of these guys.
And a fat 400+ obp with 35 hrs and 78 rbis.

The comparison has actually been brought up many times this year.

But I find it somewhat fascinating that this thread wasn't started when Judge was mashing.

Not in a thread specifically dedicated to it when Judge was going crazy and it was much more of a gap between the two.
