I thought the exact same thing.

I think he might have good numbers against Sale. He also went yard off a lefty yesterday. But I agree with you, unless his numbers against Sale are really good.
How/why does Frazier bat 5th?
Matt M. : 8/13/2017 7:28 pm : link
Not only is he hitting .200, but Didi is hitting over .300, one of the best hitters in baseball for the last month, and breaks up the righties in the middle of the lineup. With lineups like this, it is no surprise they aren't scoring runs.

I don't know if I should respond, B. I got called out by some dude on the other thread for daring to respond to adamg's post.

But no, it actually wasn't him. Just Met fans in general comparing Conforto and Judge again since Judge is now struggling. Par for the course. Why compare the two to begin with, who knows?

No. Apparently, we have 'superiority complexes' because our first comparison for Judge isn't Conforto, a guy who Judge leads in just about every statistical average that exists, outside of BA.

Unreal.

He's given Sale at least 12-15 strikes on sliders curving around the plate, and then rings up Frazier inside.

They are mostly all strikes. But I agree Sales plate is a little wider than Montgomery's was.

But the point is it is all pitchers with Judge. He is constantly 0-2. He either looks at a ball down the middle or swings at shit outside.
Both Judge and Romine..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/13/2017 10:07 pm : link
had had their at-bats start off with two sliders off the plate that get called strikes.

A disadvantage against any pitcher - against Sale -forget about it.

He doesn't even lead in BA this season.

They're virtually the same player... except Judge could be a 300/40+ home run/100 RBI/100 walk per year guy and Conforto's ceiling is Adam Jones with a few more walks and a worse glove.

shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/13/2017 11:55 pm : link
that still holds a playoff spot. This or Betances blown save in Chicago had to be the worst loss of the season. IDGAF what Devers did... Chapman shit the bed and damn near shitted us into being swept.
Just think about it,
Dave in Hoboken : 8/13/2017 11:59 pm : link
we went thru a significant period of time of Betances struggling mightily. Now, Chapman is doing the same. Tough to win when your 8th and 9th inning guys struggle for months at a time, and at different times of the season. Then, if that's not enough, the offense has been shit for awhile. Not to mention some of the brutal injuries that have kept some guys out for months at a time (Hicks, Castro, CC, Holiday with whatever he's going through because he was hot in the first half).

Yeah. That's way too much to overcome. It's a miracle they're still in the playoff hunt at this point.

Chapman is not a closer right now. The evidence is right there, we saw it Friday night. He needed a rest and to come back in a low pressure situation against a lefty or two.

Shame of it is at 1-2 on Devers, after making Hanley look silly, I'm thinking it's the best Chap's looked all season and he's back. Devers looks special. That sucks.

It's hindsight but if he throws a slider there Devers would have been a mile ahead of it.

Yeah, he looked really good before the HR. Then, walking the first 2 batters in the 10th was just the icing on the cake. Might've gotten in his head. Not good.
Oddly enough, I think Chapman's issues were the same as Betances...
shockeyisthebest8056 : 8/14/2017 12:15 am : link
Chappy looked the best he looked all season, then only pitched once in 10 days prior to Friday night. While I'm royally fucking pissed about tonight, it's difficult to have guys sit in the 'pen for over a week, then expect them to be at their best. Can't have guys sitting around waiting for save opportunities that never come.

my takes:
Stu11 : 8/14/2017 12:39 am : link
1. all of you that have already cemented our dynasty starting next year or the year after better put the brakes on. This team strikes out way way way too much. 15 more tonight. They just don't make contact enough. When you can't make contact you can scratch and claw your way to runs off guys like Sale. That's one thing I've totally underestimated about the Sox. They are way better at taking pitches and making contact.
2. 2 positions that can absolutely rip the heart out of a team are placekicker and closer. Since the all star Break Chappy has killed us. blew 2 games vs. the Sox and did everything he could to blow a 3rd Friday. How in god's name can Girardi bring him out for the 10th with Kahnle and Green in the pen? Especially once he drilled Bradley. I don't care how many strikes he's thrown, once a pitcher with control problems drills a guy he's done.
Oh and they can't bring automated HP umps in quick enough. How can he call the same exact pitch he called a ball the whole top of the 10th (4 times to Betts!) a strike to Judge in the bottom half???
Kahnle is another that has been hit a bit lately
xman : 8/14/2017 2:33 am : link
He has given up some hard hit outs . Is he one trick pony 100MPH ?

Did we trot Chappy out for the 10th because of the lefty hitter leading off guy or for Chappy to pitch 2 innings? I think he hit the lead off batter? When lefty swinging Devers hit game tying homer earlier, maybe you think twice about bringing Chappy out for the 10th.

On Saturday deciding to pitch to Benintendy rather then walking him with first base open and men on second and third with one out blew up. Was that call a gut call or is that the way one plays that situation?

Joe seems to be off: not pushing the right button .

Minor adjustments could go a long way

Headley and Frazier on the field at the same time is ugly. Headley from the left side and Frazier platoon against lefties. Why isn't that kid Cooper playing more? Is Joe Dimaggio blocking his way?

Anyone think Judge is on the way to be put in the 5 hole? Is that 2 weeks too late ?

Its been a fun year to date with plenty more to come . Tough to swallow those 21 one run losses

All true. But a blown save can't help but discourage the team and have a negative impact on the manager's judgement for the remainder of the game. That is, blown saves are not good things.

Chapman has had serious control problems this year. Rotor cuff issues? I don't know, but whatever it is probably can't be fixed this year.

Apparently I have an insidious character flaw. Sorry to bring down this thread by being me fellas.

And just some optimism, we're still only 5.5 back with all our problems, bad luck, and unclutchness. So if Chapman and the rest of the pen start performing at their level, teams better hope to score early.

I questioned earlier in the thread before game time why Headley was in there instead of Cooper. Headley againsy lefties is batting like 220. I think it's time to move Judge out of the 3 spot. Keeep him in the lineup. But, I would move him down. Heard this morning that after going 38-22 the Yanks are 9 games under 500.
I was at the game
mavric : 8/15/2017 9:12 am : link
My first time at the new stadium. Looks the same on the inside for all practical purposes, but the game is different. It's turned into a combo rock concert/baseball game with all the new techno-visual/audio stuff. Still trying to figure out in my head if all the crazy music and lights are a distraction to the game or if it enhances the game. It's no longer the old "buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks" while lazily watching the game in the sun.

My grandson is 16 and absolutely loved it....especially when Chapman came in and the lights dimmed and suddenly it looks like the whole building is on fire and add that crazy entry song at volumes good for 20 blocks away complete with sirens and Zeppelin-like guitar riffs blasting and everyone standing up and screaming and dancing.

Anyway, I was disappointed in the loss, but it was a great game to watch and my grandson (whose other grandfather has worked to make him a Mets fan since his birth) has converted to a Yankee fan. He even insisted on buying a Yankee hat. Said it was the best time he's ever had in his life.

Regardless, baseball is a funny game of hitting slumps, pitching slumps, and hot streaks. A season is a ride through the hills and valleys. In the end, the ONLY thing that matters is 1) making the playoffs and 2) be on a hot streak when the time comes. If Judge gets back on track, Hicks continues to find out he's a superstar in the making, Sanchez refinds his groove, and Didi continues to be Didi (love that guy) - and two or three of our starters are at the top of their game in October and Chapman is the Chapman of old - this team can go all the way this year even though this really isn't their year.

I'm pinning my hopes on the idea that they are rolling through the valleys right now and next month they start up the hill and hit their peak at just the right time. They have the talent - they just have to make the playoffs and stay healthy and get hot at the right time.

Back to the Corner
