NFT: Golf Courses in Long Island

McNally's_Nuts : 8/14/2017 9:53 am
Morning,

Me and my buddy are looking to play somewhere in Long Island that isn't Bethpage. Great facility, but getting tired of it. I play the Black and the Red often, I'm a 5 handicap.

I played Harbor Links and thought it was nice, but would never pay 130 dollars to play it again...it isn't worth that much.

So I'm asking my BBI brethren to help a brother out. Outside of Bethpage and Eisenhower, what are some other nice courses at reasonable prices. 50-80 bucks is what we are looking for.
Maybe this will help

Although I moved away from LI many years ago,

I grew up caddying at Shinnecock & The National and was lucky enough to play them frequently. But we did play some public courses out in Manorville (a hike from where you've indicated, but worth it): Swan Lake and Rock Hill. Both were enjoyable, decent layouts and relatively inexpensive and in your price range. May be too far out if you're looking to stay in Nassau or close to Nassau/Suffolk border. In central Suffolk, Smithtown Landing wasn't a bad option, either.

Caveat: I haven't played any of these in many years, so current opinions may vary.

I always liked Timber Point

How far are you looking to travel?

There are some real nice courses out east (National, the Woods at Cherry Creek, etc...). As someone mentioned above, Smithtown Landing.
I'd say

2 hours.

one of LI's nicest public courses closed down some years ago. The Links at Shirley was very nice. It was only open 8-10 years but the recession took it's toll.
I loved Tallgrass

but sadly that has closed too. The National is a good course. Cheery Creek and the Woods in Riverhead. I like Spring Lake too.

I played that course in an IJGT event in 2005, it was fun. Sad to see it closed, I really liked it from what I remembered it.
Montauk Downs, maybe?

Not sure if that's too far for you, but otherwise it fits the bill.
Middle Bay in Oceanside

isn't a bad course in the area.

Great track. Have played it many times. Tee times use to be screwy if I recall.
Trump Links

...right over Whitestone Bridge on Bronx side.
I just saw the "reasonable price" reference...

... I've heard that Trump Links might not exactly be "reasonably priced"
Glen Cove...

Nice course, its short and maybe too easy for you but its a nice course, its close to the city and it doesn't cost too much. Harbor Links fees are such a freaking joke - its not enough I pay the taxes around here?
My friend had to

bail and he drives, I don't.

Looks like I'll just tackle Bethpage Black!

That's 227 and it's a real PITA to get there without a car.

Courses I like within the $40-$70 range:

Timber Point
Hamlet Willow Creek
Mill Pond
West Sayville
Pine Ridge

I'm in Ronkonkoma so I generally play the Suffolk courses. I'm also partial to Holbrook because it's cheap and 2 miles from my house. Not the greatest course but fun to play and is rarely crowded.
