NFT: Mets vs. Yankees: AKA Judge vs. Conforto

bigbluewreckingcrew25 : 8/14/2017 12:48 pm
The cross town rivals go out for 4 games. Starting tonight at Yankee Stadium. The Mets are looking to play spoiler while the Yankees are looking to solidify their playoff chances. With Montero pitching tonight, I think the Mets should just forfeit the game and give it to the Yankees and save the hits for tomorrow.

Many other storylines to watch. Judge vs. Conforto and the battle for who is the best young player in NY. Right now Judge is ice cold while Conforto is red hot. Also, the Mets will have Rosario and Smith get their first taste of the Subway series. Finally, does Chapman turn it around after a rough outing (really one pitch) last night.

I was thinking, when is it time to retire the Judge's chambers. I think it is clear now the Yankees should not have started this as soon as they did. Judge may still be a great player, but this was unneeded pressure to put on him.

Yes, he's absolutely earned that spot, maybe til Florial starts knocking in a couple of years. Frazier-Hicks-Judge sounds pretty damn good, as much as I respect Gardy.

In any event, hell of a nice start from Montero.

What the hell do you mean you take it back? You didn't need a measuring tape to realize that it wasn't a cheapo home run. The ball was more than a few rows back in the stands in right center, under no circumstance is that a cheap home run. You just seem to enjoy saying dumb shit on baseball threads for whatever reason.

Once Hansel Robles is in a game, the Mets might as well forfeit.

I actually switched to Matthew Berry's 800 hour fantasy football special as soon as I saw him on the mound. Sounds like he delivered as usual!

The good news is that losing games like this stopped being frustrating about 50 games ago so we might as well just keep on losin'.
We needed that.

As a Yankee fan, I've been reading a lot about Dominic Smith for the Mets, but I have not actually looked at him until tonight.

Is he seriously a top prospect? I'm not trying to bash the Mets here but... he looks more like a dude playing beer league (in appearance only!) than a young up and comer. Does not pass the eye test that's for sure. Not like it matters, he might be a great player anyway but I was taken aback when I first saw him. I'd say he looks roughly 37 years old.
.
arcarsenal : 8/14/2017 10:23 pm : link
I don't know why people talk about Smith like he's 800 lbs. Schwarber doesn't look any more athletic than Smith and everyone was drooling over him when he came up.

Smith is never going to have the same body as Cespedes but it's not going to matter. He's not an elite prospect but some of the weight stuff is getting overblown. He's a 1B. I don't think anyone is expecting him to turn into Goldschmidt but he's a solid prospect.

Couldn't care less how he looks, but it is pretty funny to see him listed at 185 lbs
.
arcarsenal : 8/14/2017 10:27 pm : link
He's obviously not 185 lbs - BRef has him at like 240 and FanGraphs has him @ 250. I don't know who has him listed at 185 but obviously that's not accurate.

arcarsenal : 8/14/2017 10:32 pm : link
There's been a lot made over Smith's weight - it's a concern from the standpoint that he's got to really work to stay at a realistic playing weight. He's just a heavy kid. But he seems to be progressing as a hitter which is all that really matters. Now he'll have to grow accustomed to the MLB level, so I'm glad he's getting some work in this year. It'll help him prepare for next season.
Smith is definitely
pjcas18 : 8/14/2017 10:38 pm : link
pudgy but he was leading the entire minor leagues in hits at 22 years old (and he just turned 22 in May).

and he's a decent fielder.

His power also picked up this year as people expected it would as he matured.

He's a legit bona fide prospect.

he will need to keep his weight in check as he approaches his mid-20's and he's not beating out any infield hits, but his weight is fine for 1B.

he's more of a Mo Vaughn/Prince Fielder type than a Cody Bellinger, but should still thrive.

LOL. The one that I said that was perfectly built in the WS two whole years ago?? The one that was you know... making the WS? Get over yourself. You are beyond boring. Keyboard warrior with your goon squad sister. I said nothing antagonistic and I even took my comment back when I learned how far the ball was hit almost an hour before you two clowns felt the need to chime in and attack. I just assume anything hit into that right field shallow porch is a cheapo due to that tin can you play in. Apologies.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 8/14/2017 10:54 pm : link
1) I didn't think the ball was that low. I really think you guys continue to exaggerate the called strikes at the knees. To me, this looked like it crossed the knee. Even if it was a ball, it didn't miss by much. It was certainly close enough to be called a strike. He has taken too many of that same pitch for called strike 3. An adjustment has to come.

2) Ironically, the pitch he hit for a HR was lower and outside. Was this the adjustment mentioned above?

3) The weird thing is that he seems to be getting called out a lot on strikes at the knees. But, I saw a graphic yesterday looking at called strikes on Judge in the first half and the second half, claiming pitchers made adjustments. The 2 images shows a lot of low strikes called in the first half and a ton of high strikes against him in the second half. It sure seems to be the opposite.

Did Lagares got his hand on the bag before the tag?

The tag wasn't immediate.

I though he was safe and I'm very surprised the Mets didn't challenge.

The ball beat him by a year but it was a nice slide and not a real good tag.
The initial replay from the home plate view looked safe. But, the view from the 1st base side showed the tag applied to the chest before Lagares got his right hand on the base.

Not just an issue when Judge is in the box but certainly more regularly an issue - it's above the knee, not at or below it. I'd guess he has about 15-20 K's this season on pitches that are not technically strikes.

Sorry, the way I responded to that sounded snarky - wasn't intentional.

I actually weigh 185-190 so it's pretty funny that SNY had Smith listed as that. Smith is literally like.. two of me. He's a big boy.

Yeah and I immediately took it back and said I was wrong. Is it really necessary to attack not only the post, but the poster like a couple of children a full hour after the fact? If it wasn't the same two posters every single year in Mets/Yankees threads Im sure I would have had no issue but its tiresome. I certainly wasn't attacking anyone or provoking.

That's the actual debate. Not Judge vs Conforto.

I never saw Conforto before and honestly, I think the right debate for him will be Conforto vs Clint Frazier in two years as Judge is a unique player whose historical comparators are Kingman, Killebrew, Strawberry, Dunn, Winfield, Frank Thomas...some mix of big strikeout power hitters and guys with huge strike zones and long armed mechanics that can easily slide away the 3 inches they need

I don't follow the Mets at all ( they are in a different league) so I have no idea whatsoever what their next 5 years might look like. I was hoping to get a sense of that from the posts during the annual home and home series

Mets farm system is currently weak. That said they have Rosario, Conforto, Syndergaard, DeGrom, Matz, Smith all low to upper 20's. They have work to do. Farm systems also can fluctuate year to year. This happened to be a poor organizational year from top to bottom.
Conforto vs Judge is fan fodder,
Keith : 8/15/2017 10:17 am : link
it means nothing. Both look to be solid young players. I'd rather be Judge though because he's on a team built for long term success wheras Conforto is on a team that doesn't really have a direction or a plan.

It's exciting times to be a Yankee fan as the turnaround was fairly quick from the aging run that is just about over(CC looks to be the last of that group) and onto the youth movement that is showing signs of long term sustainability. The Yankees can essentially field a team of position players with all young high upside players. With the right decisions and growth, the Yankees could have another dynasty coming.
I'm trying to enjoy this playoff race
bceagle05 : 8/15/2017 10:35 am : link
but I can't help but look forward to next year. Having Frazier, Bird and Torres added into the mix on a daily basis with Sanchez and Judge is gonna be a lot of fun to watch. Keep getting younger.

This is what kills me about some of you guys. You "never saw Conforto before" but you have no problem comparing him to Clint Frazier. Frazier...I guy who has sucked since being called up and can't touch Conforto's numbers in the minors. Really? It's a laughable statement. Someone even said that his ceiling already was Adam Jones...a player that Conforto is already better than. At least Conforto has a track record of performing the way he has been this year...which has been outstanding.

Yet with Judge, after a third of a season of being hot, you have not problem comparing him with the likes of HOF players and project him to have a HOF career. Completely discounting that Judge was awful when he was called up last season and his numbers in the minors don't even come close to what he DID for a third of a season.

I have no doubt that Judge will be a beast. Not the beast he was the first third of the season, but a good player for a long time. So will Conforto. He won't have the glamour of the 500 foot HRs that Judge does, but he will hit plenty of HRs. And he's a year younger than Judge.
Judge/Conforto is the undercard.
bceagle05 : 8/15/2017 11:07 am : link
The main event comes next season when Rosario and Gleyber Torres both get rolling. Should be a bloodbath around here.
Eh
Keith : 8/15/2017 11:10 am : link
it won't matter. Yankee fans will be focused on winning a championship, we will let Mets fans care about who the better young players are(which are obviously teh Yankees).
