Is that Webb starts getting more of these reps that Jordan says he is missing out on. Josh Johnson is not an NFL QB and should not get reps ahead of Webb.
RE: My hope after they dissected the film from last week...
Josh Johnson is not an NFL QB and should not get reps ahead of Webb.
For someone who's not an NFL QB, he sure has played for a lot of NFL teams. What's the record for that btw? Eight should put him in the running (although he only made the 53-man roster for six of the eight).
That is kind of my point. Why is this guy taking away reps from Webb? We all know that Webb will be the 3, but he should not taking a back seat to a journeyman who looked completely lost against the Steelers.
TO develop Webb properly. They do not want him to play this year. So they are giving Smith and Johnson a lot of reps so they pick the best backup.
I am unsure if that is the right approach, especially if we are going to carry 3 QB's on the 53. Look at what the Jets did with Hackenburg last year. You don't think he could have benefitted from meaningful snaps in training camp as a rookie or helped him develop? I know it's not the same situation (thank god), but I am always a believer of getting rookies as much work as possible to aid in their development. From the article, McAdoo has to find ways to work him in.

We all know that Webb will be the 3, but it's still undecided as to who will be the 2. If/when they reach the conclusion that Smith is the winner, Johnson's snaps will be reduced, but the extra snaps will go to Smith, not Webb. The worst thing you can do for a QB working on his mechanics is put him in a competitive game (simulated or not) behind an OL with pass-protection issues.
Except that I don't. If you know what I mean.
The theory presupposes that we know more than the coaches and that they haven't thought of it.
Mac makes what ? A few million a year? When they pay me a few million for football advice then I'll feel I can disagree with him. Until then.....

Webb is not in the picture for any starts. Pretty certain that he has flaws they wanted corrected or needs to further develop fundamentals that he is weak on, so lots of reps without pressure to develop good muscle memory. He needs to learn to read and know the playbook - quite difficult for a rookie, even with a history of being well taught. We don't need David Carr II - a good QB ruined by being sent to the wolves too soon.
Why is Johnson still here? Geno is 10 months removed from ACL surgery. If he tweaks that thing in camp and Johnson is gone, they are up shit's creek. To my eye, Geno is the better QB and actually looks like he can win games. In the end Geno is likely to win the competition, but the Giants need to hedge their bets until the last preseason game is over.
section 125 with a great post that gets to the essence of why Webb is not Dak Prescott.
All QBs start from different starting places. Webb may be better than Prescott some day! But for Webb, this year, it starts with mechanics that have to be burned in
If Eli goes down(g-d forbid) we still have a top D that can carry us and enough weapons where a capable backup can win games. Having a legit backup is not a waste of a roster spot. we are setup to be a top tier team. We went 11-5 with a shit offense last year. It isn't like Eli carried us so a capable backup is crucial
that he might be in the running to compete for the backup QB slot. However, if that was NEVER the Giants' intention and they think that he is more of a project, who would:
1. NEVER play this year, and
2. would force us to keep three QBs,
then I'm thinking that the Giants have blundered and should have drafted a good Tackle, or bruising HB, or speedy LB with their third pick. Plus an extra slot on the 53 man roster would be available with only two QBs.
I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but we won't know for at least another year. And if we don't win another SB this year or next, we might always wonder.
will be the difference between us winning a SB or not. We need to eventually find Eli's replacement and that's what they are hoping for with Webb. With that comes risk, but he was a 3rd rounder where the bust rate is high for any other position anyway.
We do need a legit backup. If Eli goes down for the season it likely won't matter but if he gets dinged for a game or two, we need someone who gives us a chance. It isn't a wasted roster spot at all, especially when there's talk on here of keeping 4 TE's. Give me the surefire backup QB all day...
QBs this year. (Eli/Smith/Webb). Also, hanging onto Johnson until the end of camp is a smart insurance move.
I do believe Webb needs more reps in practice games. Why? Because if he gets reps, both Webb and the coaches will find out what Webb needs to work on (besides the basics) while he warms the bench this year.

I'm amazed at the number of BBIers who would potentially sacrifice the Giants' season (by not having a quality backup QB) just so we could fit that uber-talented 53rd player on the roster.
The Giants obviously feel that Webb is NOT ready for the backup QB role and they are not going to hinder his development by throwing him into the fire.
They've apparently already decided that they're going with 3 QBs this year...and if all goes as expected, Webb will be the backup QB in 2018.
they'd just give Webb the backup job now and forget about these other QBs not named Eli.
Me too. Waste of a roster spot.
An if the Giants are the middle of a playoff run and Eli goes out in the middle of a game, do you want a veteran like Geno Smith who's been exposed to that atmosphere before or a rookie QB?

If the Giants don't win another Super Bowl this year or next, I guarantee you I won't be wondering if a different 3rd round pick would've made the difference. On the other hand, if they win a Super Bowl with Davis Webb in 2020, we'll all be saying what a smart pick it was regardless of how the team did in 2017 and 2018.
The next Giant's starting QB not named Manning to win a SB

Johnson and Smith are fighting for the #2 spot. The other will be cut.

Johnson's reps should be kept to a minimum.

3 QB's makes sense

will almost certainly not be named Webb.
What name is it more likely to be?
I guess Johnson or Smith are more common names. But the issue there is you actually have to know how to play QB...

Statistically speaking, he's likely to be a first round pick who hasn't been born yet.
