NFT: Mets Chat: Another day another drama?

A few days back, Sandy Alderson said Robert Gsellman needed to pitch better during his rehab. Gsellman replied: I dont really care."

Now I don't know the context but Carig 100% seems to imply it was a prickly/negative response from Gsellman with the follow-up

There's no "if." He did say that.

I'd like to hear more about this

-Thompson HR/Double

-Ryder Ryan 2 innings 2 hits 0 runs 1 walk 1 k

-Bautista 1 perfect 2 k's. 98-99

-Callahan 6 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 9 K (nice K rate, 12 baserunners not good but it's LV... they almost "have to" call him up in Sept.)

Asked about Sandy Alderson's comment that he needed to pitch better to return to Mets, Robert Gsellman replied: "I don't really care." #Mets
Maybe this lights a fire
Metnut : 8/16/2017 9:31 am : link
under Gsellmen and he'll pitch well tonight and look like the 2016 version of himself down the stretch. He's definitely one of the biggest disappointments of this miserable season.
Rosario
DanMetroMan : 8/16/2017 9:32 am : link
is going to have to tighten up his approach as we go along. He's shown some VERY exciting flashes but he's swinging at everything. It's not a sustainable approach long term. He wasn't THIS much of a free swinger previously so I'd be patient 100% BUT his swinging strike % would lead baseball if he qualified.
I'm
DanMetroMan : 8/16/2017 9:36 am : link
NOT at all worried about Rosario long term so save me impassioned defenses but his 0-Swing% (swinging at balls out of the zone is a staggering 50%) for context Joey Gallo 33.6, Aaron Judge 25.6. I think it's just nerves being overly excited. Just wild numbers so far.
The sample size
Metnut : 8/16/2017 9:38 am : link
is still really small and he's still really young to be in MLB. Yea, he's swinging at everything and it's not pretty to see but that's why a lot of us wanted him up sooner because he's going to need these ABs to get through the adjustment to MLB pitching. On the bright side, the ball really explodes off of his bat.

Like I said I'm not at all concerned right now. Just saw the stat and it was eyepopping (not that you needed a stat to tell you that).

I think he's just excited and trying to be a sparkplug - he'll learn better plate discipline as he gets more comfortable. I noticed it too, though - he's definitely free-swinging big time right now.

He's fun to watch though. Kid is going to be a stud.
I give Sandy credit for the BP guys he got
Eric on Li : 8/16/2017 9:47 am : link
they all seem somewhat interesting. Whether they pan out or not who knows - that's why they still need to spend on a veteran this offseason - but he took a thin area of the system and added some talent.

Re Rosario/Smith, realistically i'm just hoping they continue to flash their talents (especially on D) and not look overwhelmed. Don't want them to have to go back down at any point.
It would be nice
Metnut : 8/16/2017 9:49 am : link
if Terry didn't sit these kids at key ABs during the games.

He's got a much bigger frame than I realized and his power is pretty impressive. His swing on the homers the other way kind of remind me of skinny a-rod way back (I am not saying he is going to be a-rod, just that his swing is similar).
What a mess.
PhiPsi125 : 8/16/2017 9:50 am : link
This is an issue with the players but it's also an issue with the leadership of this organization. I mean, if fans can see the dysfunction, then I'm sure the players can as well.

I don't know if other teams have similar issues with players (I'm sure they do to some degree) but it just seems like nobody is ever on the same page in this organization.

I really don't know how to fix it but this team lost me with the Robles "pinched genitals" tweet. Why on earth would you give that as a reason for the nation to see? It's just a microcosm of how poorly run and out of touch this Front Office is.

pjcas18 : 8/16/2017 9:59 am : link
you have to hit rock bottom or get closer to it sometimes to get anyone to act and while I think the Mets need a major overhaul in the leadership dept they were in the WS two years ago and the WC last year there isn't enough impetus for change for patient owners.

He's going to retire, they aren't going to pay him for not managing. Now they can go through the "process" (of seeing who will take the least amount of money to manage this team).

1. No reason to pay 2 managers in a "lost" season
2. No real upside to embarrassing him right now. He's gone in 6 weeks.

Won't say it is being taken out of context. Or defend him. But he was asked what he thought about Aldersons comments. Basically he was saying he hadn't heard his comments until then, the comments don't bother him ('don't care') and that he needs to finish the season strong to build towards next year. Bad choice of words, no doubt. But this isn't "dysfunction"

I agree, it isn't a sign of organizational dysfunction. Alderson has every right and obligation to put pressure on Gsellman to pitch better. And even if he was responding to a question, he is a professional athlete, and has to respond better. Not a big deal, and I'm sure he'll learn from it.

bruce in wny : 8/16/2017 12:20 pm : link
While I do think its a bad idea to piss off your boss, I don't blame Gsellman for being annoyed. The GM should be conveying his thoughts to the pitcher directly, not through the media - that would be the professional approach. I really would like to see Sandy retire after this season. he did some good work; let someone else take it from here.

If that's how it really happened then it's really a gross misrepresentation from writers. Getting tired of writers doing this.
I listened to Gammons with Francesa yesterday
Go Terps : 8/16/2017 1:02 pm : link
Gammons talked a bit about the Cardinals and how that team has, for lack of a better term, a culture that has permeated it for a long time and resulted in a great deal of success.

What's the Mets' culture been? Shitty owners, incompetent medical staff, and dumb players that act like they own the town before they accomplish anything.

Being a Mets fan is a trying existence.

I'm absolutely not a fan who says the team has to spend, especially not for the sake of spending, and I've said multiple times the 2018 off-season makes more sense to spend than the upcoming 2017 off-season, but this is some bullshit right here.

Sandy should be free to set payroll where he feels it should be in order to field a competitive team IMO.

Now think about whether or not you'd say to a reporter or reporters that an athlete on your team has to do better.

Is it an issue of them not thinking Gsellman isn't trying?

I have to imaging just about any young athlete is TRYING, and maybe sometimes TOO MUCH, especially if frustrated by injury.

Just don't understand how such a statement is productive at all as a GM.

have at least considered deGrom there, but no sense risking your best pitcher.

Now I realize getting someone from even Albany or Binghamton (for example) for tonight's game is unlikely (though certainly not impossible), but this is one reason Vegas sucks. Someone will need to be on a cross country flight (Cecchini?) if these injuries are not minor.
