NFT: Best flea prevention/treatment for dog

WillVAB : 8/16/2017 10:11 am
I have an Australian cattle/Corgi mix and have used Front line with her since I've had her. Lately it doesn't seem to be as effective as it was before.

Any BBI'ers have any favorites/recommendations regarding flea prevention for dogs?

Thanks.
Nexguard has been our go to

for our 4 year old Portuguese water dog (that doesn't like the water btw). It is a chewable that he loves the taste of.
I use Frontline

We've been using
jv : 8/16/2017 10:30 am : link
Bayer Advantix on our Bernese Mountain since we got her over a year and a half ago. Haven't found a flea or tick on her since. Prior to starting it (when we first got her as an 8 week old puppy) we pulled 3 ticks off her within a week.
they have these pills now that your dog
gidiefor : Mod : 8/16/2017 10:41 am : link
can take once a month that are terriffic -- I too found that Frontline was not enough -- the pills are called Trifexis
Sentinal
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/16/2017 10:47 am : link
is what am using. Petco no longer will give out Trifexis.
Thanks guys

What's the cost on the pills?
Nexguard here too - cost is ridiculous
jcn56 : 8/16/2017 11:01 am : link
but they're extremely effective. I'm in an area with a lot of ticks over the summer, so I also added a dedicated tick collar (Preventic) and so far, so good.
You might want to think twice before using Trifexis

Grieving animal lovers across the country are coming forward blaming a popular pet drug for killing their dogs.

“It’s like a piece of your heart is being torn out,” said dog owner Beth Timms from Gainesville.

Her dog, Gizmo, died after taking Trifexis. The once-a-month pill made by Elanco is a combination pill for heartworm, parasites and flea prevention. (Elanco is the animal health division of pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly.)

Timms emailed consumer investigator Jim Strickland after finding a Facebook page titled “Trifexis Kills Dogs.”

Owners from all over the country have posted on the page, blaming the drug for their dogs’ deaths.

never had a flea or tick issue with it.

My brother's field dog used to get ticks all the time with Frontline, and ticks have no been an issue since switching to Advantix
Comfortis use to be a go to pill for ONLY fleas for the month
xman : 8/16/2017 11:23 am : link
then people wanted a pill that does more then just fleas.

I see advertisements for Brevada that is good for 3 months.

I use comfortis but I have cats so heart worms aren't an issue. I also pill split to bring the cost way down. I buy the size for a much bigger animal and cut it in quarters to the correct dose

That's why Petco doesn't provide it anymore. Sentinel is the same, but more cost effective.

(the chewable) and feel like it's working we see no ticks or fleas.

However, we just got back from the vet and our old vet retired and he was replaced by a vet probably 50 years younger.

the new vet tested our dogs stool for multiple tick related ailments (vs the couple our old vet did) and the new vet found a rare tick related ailment in our dog.

No clue how long she's had it, it's not lyme disease but something else tick related and she's not on antibiotics. She showed none of the symptoms they said she'd have with this ailment, but they said it could take a while to show up.

Also this ailment is more common in the south (and we rescued our dog from Alabama, but that was three years ago, so not sure what to think).

nexguard?
old vet vs new vet?
BS to make me buy antibiotics?
Where are you getting fleas?
Bubba : 8/16/2017 1:52 pm : link
If its your yard many lawn care companies offer flea and tick applications. Its far safer for the dogs than any pills or collars etc. We have our yard treated 2-3 times a year and have not seen a flea or tick. We have 5 dogs BTW.
Gut feeling only, but I don't know how much I trust those

stool samples. I spent plenty of time and money pumping the poor little guy full of Panacur because they said he had giardia. Back and forth, 3 stool samples.

Finally, I gave up. The medicine didn't agree with him, it seemed like he was fine, I said let's see how this plays out. He gets another stool sample 3 weeks later and he's clear.

Not that I think the vet was trying to rob me, but I wonder what the efficacy of the testing is, and whether they just sometimes say 'close enough, medicate'.

That's what my gut said too, my dog shows no symptoms of anything and the old vet said she had no issues with the stool. New vet says she's got some rare disease, I might get a second opinion.

Slightly off topic but PLEASE don't EVER use any Hartz product to treat fleas on a cat . Hartz flea products have killed and hospitalized thousands of cats for many years and they refuse to take the garbage off the shelves .
yikes

gotta find out about this -- I may have the wrong name -- I purchased these pills from the vet

Anyone even THINKING about using a Hartz product on their pet , please take a moment to check out the hartzvictims.org website .

Hartz nearly killed one of my cats a few years ago . When I sent them a letter of complaint along with my vet bill , they reimbursed for the vet bill with the stipulation that if I cashed the check they sent me , I would agree not to sue them .

It is obscene that this poison is still available to unsuspecting pet owners .

A 3 to 4 year old Shepherd. Became very lethargic and wouldn't eat starting a few hours after applying it, died within two days.

Recently moved so that may be a factor. Also take the dog to my fiancé' parents house fairly frequently and they have 3 dogs -- so that may be a factor. Regardless, I've been pretty consistent w the Frontline application and even throw in a flea bath here and there. Still chewing and I found 2 fleas on her last night.
That for the Rec's guys
