NFT: Yankees Rule-5 Draft management

Beer Man : 8/16/2017 1:24 pm
A lot of Yankees fans (including myself) have expressed concern over the upcoming Rule-5 Draft and the potential roster crunch that the Yankees could be facing. The linked article provides an interesting read on how the Yankees are managing it, and will avoid the Dec roster crunch.
SB Nation - Jason Cohen - ( New Window )
Good summary,

thanks for posting it.
That was an excellent job...

it will recur next year, but I'm sure Cash will figure it out. And we could end up with a very deep IFA crop this year because he "sold" prospects and otherwise for pool money.
Thanks for

that. Helps clear things up.

Interesting read. I wasn't aware that Chance Adams does not have to be protected this year. That's music to my ears

He doesn't need to be protected, but this team has to seriously consider adding him to the roster. If not for the home stretch this year, then as a starter next year.
I think Adams is a prime trade chip in the winter

His value will never be higher and the Yankees are going to have to find young top of the rotation starters if they want to compete for championships going forward. Adams could be a major piece in a trade for an established pitcher. I think Csshman has been smart not exposing him in MLB yet.

Wow- is this off base.

The reason that Adams isn't in the big is because he is NOT Rule 5 eligible this winter- thus putting him on the roster now would force the Yanks to expose a prospect that they do want to protect.

Adams will be in the rotation next year for two VERY simple reasons. One- he has at least mid-rotation potential with the upside for more- a MUCH higher ceiling than Montgomery. Two- he's cheap. Why pay millions to a SP who is unlikely to outperform a minimum salary SP?

The Yanks have an overabundance of OF and relievers- THAT is the pool they will draw from to make a trade if Tanaka opts out and leaves.

The rotation next year starts with:

Severino
Gray
Adams
Montgomery

They only need one SP if Tanaka opts out. If he stays, the Yanks likely won't even bother with looking for anything more than spring training and AAA depth.

This would be a major mistake.

First, Adams is almost at his IP count for the year. Depending on where the Yanks have set the limit, he will only throw another 20-30 innings total in 2017. Why bring up a guy to make a couple starts and then shut him down?

Second, since he does not need Rule 5 protection, if they bring him up, that means that he will be taking away a roster spot from a prospect that the Yanks DO want to and need to protect. That's just bad roster management of the first order.

Yeah, hard to find info. I've only posted that information on this site about a dozen times in the last month.

Not sure that is so. When George was running the team, that would probably be a given. But throughout all the recent trade negotiations, Cash told teams that 5 players were as close to off-limits as can be: Torres, Fraizer, Florial, Adams, and Sheffield. I think he plans to hang onto Adams

Yep. You were spot on with your analysis.

I thought they should have brought him up a long time ago. He is far better than most of the arms they brought up to fill in when the injuries started; and each of them is on an innings limit.
Tanaka
Marty866b : 8/16/2017 9:02 pm : link
Yankees can't count on him next year no matter if he opts out or not. Why would he opt out? No one is going to pay him more then what the Yankees will be forced to. Wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see Tanaka again this year.
