Joint Practices?

Tony in Tampa : 8/16/2017 2:30 pm
Are the Giants having one this preseason? Seems like it's the thing to do now since it's closer to live action and you can work on stuff that you may not be able to get to in the pre-season games.

Has Mac/Reece's stated a position on holding joint practices with other teams during the pre-season? Obviously they have to be scheduled well in advance. Sorry if this was discussed and I missed it.
Camp is over.

The shorter camps will be the end of joint practices.
Patriots have had joint practices
pjcas18 : 8/16/2017 2:53 pm : link
with 2 different teams this training camp: the Texans and Jaguars.

If Belichick is doing it, there's a good reason and without knowing anything else I feel like others teams should do it too.

He's got that much on everyone else, I need no further explanation.

Yeah, but with Belichick there could always be another reason

He's not the only coach that holds joint practices and never has been.

Thanks. Did I say he was?
Seems that they stopped them
Gman11 : 8/16/2017 4:38 pm : link
after the Jets acted like they were playing in the Super Bowl instead of having a practice.

I don't get the whole "BB is a super genius because he has some joint practices" thing.

All teams used to do them. Over a long period of time. Decades. Some still do.

You don't get it because no one said i he's a super genius because of it.

Under the current CBA practice time is limited, Belichick determined that he could better prepare his players by giving them as much exposure to other teams or more than their teammates who they'll practice against on a daily basis.

I like it and I think it makes sense.

So Belichick is a genius (period) and still holds joint practices, as often as he can, not because of it.

I believe other coaches should too.

Hopefully that explains it for you and prevents you from jumping to strange conclusions that were never written.

He's probably making Manchurian Candidates out of the opposing coaches and players.
OK ...
Beezer : 8/16/2017 5:08 pm : link
maybe the "super genius" hyperbole was lost on you.

But this indicates that you think he's a step above because he holds joint practices: He's got that much on everyone else, I need no further explanation.

He's a great coach. No denying that. My point is that there's really nothing special, imo, about scrimmaging other teams in your practices.

Are you being intentionally obtuse?

I don't think he's a "step above because he holds joint practices"

I think he's a step above the other coaches in the league (at least one). I think his methods, his approach, his game preparation, his adjustments are just better than anyone else in the game today, maybe ever. Period. Hard stop. Let all the thoughts leave your brain (shouldn't take long).

AND

during training camp he holds joint practices and seems to feel like it better prepares his team.

therefore it is my opinion other coaches should also hold joint practices (as many as possible).

I do not think he's a step above anyone because he holds joint practices.

This is complex, if you don't get it that's ok.

we let go? He would be great a "joint" practices.
Like anything else, it has its benefits and its risks
Marty in Albany : 8/16/2017 5:43 pm : link
We had them all the time, but found out about the risks when we practice with the Jets, whose practice goals were not on the same page as the Giants. The risk of injuries was not worth the benefits

Kinda surprised we wouldn't have had one with a team like Pitts, especially since the two organizations have the family relationship and share the same sense of professionalism.
No. Not intentionally obtuse.

You said "I feel like other teams should do it too." They do. Sorry for misreading you, but why would you phrase it as if you thought this was a unique thing?

Ben has said (Newsday asked him at the combine) that he isn't opposed to the idea of joint practices, but that he'd have to have a sufficient comfort level with the other head coach if the Giants were to have them again.

He didn't get specific, but I interpreted it as it's probably Packers-or-bust for now. The Giants haven't played an NFC team in the preseason since I've been covering the team, so I wouldn't count on it.
