Custom from a podiatrist used to be the only option, but there are a lot of good OTC orthotics now. I've had luck with Superfeet. They have several models for different arch levels. Dicks sells them and has samples to try in store.
You would have to wear it at night and it could become very uncomfortable, but it really helped the healing process. Also make sure do a lot of stretching. Definitely get a pair of orthotics. I usually spend $300 every few years.

go to zappos and find sneakers with big arches.
In an instant I went from not being able to walk to barely any pain.
Be careful. Plantar fasciitis can occur from either really flat feet or too much of an arch. I am the latter. I got these arches that are big. Initially they really helped out the pain I had. However, now just from waking up my feet hurt and take time to start walking again. If I don't wear the arches I have my feet will kill me. I try wearing slippers around the house or different shoes and I am in constant pain.
Plantar hurts like hell when you wake up in the morning or when you've been sitting around too much. There's a muscle on the bottom of your foot that tightens up from nonuse (like sleep). Agree with the post above that a good pair of orthotics will help but you'll still have pain until it runs its course. You really need to stretch out the bottom of your feel gently to expedite the healing. Eventually this will go away on its own unless you screw it up & need surgery.
Google plantar exercises. What helped me were 3 things. If I was sitting for awhile, roll a tennis ball under the foot from front to back & side to side. Gently will help loosen the muscle. I also took a strap or towel around my toes and pulled the foot back slowly. Everything slows& easy. Good luck
I had it bad, to the point where I would fall down if I got out of bed to quickly. It sucked. Some one turned me onto Aline Insoles. They completely cured me of Plantar Fasciitis. They helped ease the pain right away. I HIGHLY recommend them.
1. The night splint. There are hard plastic ones and soft ones, but it doesn't really matter which one you use. Be sure to use it every night.
2. Stretching. Especially if you're going to play a sport. Stretch before and after. Also, as soon as you wake up.
3. Anti-inflammatories. Whether aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen. Take it every day.
4. Shoe inserts. There are heel pads and there are heel and arch pads. I used the heel and arch pads. Use them whenever you have shoes on, which should be all the time. Do not walk barefoot.
Take a plastic standard water bottle and freeze it and when it's frozen use that and roll the bottom of your foot. Do this 3 times a day if possible. Foam roll and stretch your legs as well. Wear sneakers with a lot of arch support.
I am a HUGE fan of Kurus for plantar fasciitis. I ran a lot of marathons in my 20's, spent most of my adult life on my feet (as a classroom teacher) and in my 50's suddenly developed a case of PF. I'm a cross country and track coach, so I knew the symptoms.
Out of desperation I tried Kuru's and within a few days, I noticed the difference in the mornings. After 2-3 weeks, things were completely back to normal. A couple of years later, back in my "original" shoes, the PF flared up again, and Kurus returned things to normal. Now I teach in Kurus almost all the time and I haven't had any trouble at all.
I recommend them highly, though I wish they weren't so "stylish," as my preferred style is Bland. Kuru shoes - ( New Window )
the same shoes within 48 bours. Rotate your shoes so as to never wear the same shoe or sneaker within 48 hours
This is def the best advice. I have been able to manage PF flare ups by getting shoes that allow me to "feel the ground". Minimual shoes (NB, Merrell, Keens) and the pain usually goes away in a week or a little more, AND DOESNT COME BACK FOR MONTHS.
Changing how your foot muscles interact with your foot landing is essential. Minimus, Keds, Vanns or Chuck Taylors arw an inexpensive solution to the problem that wont make you look like a schmuck. All these shoes with radical arch support are only good until you turn abruptly and strain the PF.
Believe what you. Want. I have had it for years. It wasnt until I went to shoes with no "arch support" that I felt relief. And by relief, I mean I notice it every 3/4 years.
gave me orthotics and night splints. I use the splints at night while relaxing on the couch. It does a great job stretching out my calves, heel cord, and bottom of my feet.
They're difficult to find but if you search "Plantar Faciitis Asian Remedy" you should be able to order a pair. Well crafted and helped me tremendously.
