September 2nd cuts

Thinblueline : 8/16/2017 9:22 pm
There will be a flood of players cut on this date and there WILL be a few players available that will be better than what'll be on our roster. What positions do you think the Giants will be scoping out.? What players do you think might not make thier current squads and will be cut based on the team having a lot of depth at the position?
OL
Carl in CT : 8/16/2017 9:26 pm : link
If any shake loose. LB and maybe FS.
I think Jonathan Casillas is one of the worst Linebackers in the NFL

I hope they can find a good weakside linebacker somewhere, because I have never seen him make a good tack.e
Backup

OL, S, and LB.

What? He was clearly the best LB on the team last year.
The Giants are more talented than all but a few teams
BillT : 8/16/2017 9:36 pm : link
There might be a 5th CB out there. There isn't a starting OL or a RB or a LB or probably even a backup OL that they can claim that would be any better than what they have.
Power RB

I'm hoping the Steelers try to squeeze James Conner on to the PS. We should snatch him up!

I'd argue that was Robinson

Here's a link to Carl Banks showing you the video of Casillas making plays you missed.

Maybe a 5th CB

Developmental type? Thats the biggest need. And Adams and Thompson are locks for FS. Not there. Also think theyblike their LBs. Munson should replace Herz. Doubt it but her should. And they arent cutting Casillas.

We need better depth at safety.
I see potential for a trade....
George from PA : 8/16/2017 10:08 pm : link
We have extra DE which are valuable.

Veteran OL is what I want.....stabilize all these kids

I just do not see us finding better S nor corners....

Good counter point. But Casillas was also calling plays. I think you could successfully argue your point
In terms of cut players

5th CB and FS backup

I liked James Conner coming out of school, but I'm not sure he's going to be very effective at short yardage in the NFL, particularly if the OL isn't opening holes. He needs some time and space to build up momentum. He doesn't just explode.
It's going to be interesting
PEEJ : 8/16/2017 10:44 pm : link
to see, if the one cutdown will result in s flurry of low level trades, e.g. (I trade the WR I was going to cut for your CB that you were going to cut)

FS back up is either Adams or Thompson. One is the starter and one will be back up. Do you(and the others) think they will cut Adams for someone?

Roster cuts
Big_Pete : 8/16/2017 10:56 pm : link
Firstly we will look at options across all positions.

but the positions that I think we will most look to upgrade are CB, LB and RB. These are the positions that seem to have the most opportunity on the back end of the roster.

As much as I would like OL upgrades, that is only likely if a decent vet shakes loose. Even then they are more likely to be a backup/depth guy.

The way the Giants are situated with depth of talent (barring injury), we will almost certainly be shedding guys we like, particularly at WR, DE and TE.
Someday, the rumors about GB cutting Don Barclay will be true.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/16/2017 11:53 pm : link
This could be the year, as an ankle injury is costing Barclay valuable reps and opening the door for younger alternatives. McAdoo and Solari know Barclay well. They may not like him, but they know him.
Having nightmares
Dankbeerman : 8/17/2017 7:29 am : link
already of watching Valentino Blake covering anyone i a real game.

I would say we are 2 corners short, maybe a CB and a guy that can give us a S/CB backup like Hall did last year.
I'd
AcidTest : 8/17/2017 8:43 am : link
like to see if we can trade several players for one player or even a low round draft pick.

Absolutely, Perhaps they can trade a TE for some safety depth. Adams is a lock and a solid backup but the Giants need to find a better option than Berhe.
Not sure there will be any upgrades available
mavric : 8/17/2017 9:16 am : link
Possibly a veteran CB or power back, but I doubt it. Giants blew it when they didn't find a way to get Blount on the team (IMHO)
Cuts most likely to be improvements
Watson : 8/17/2017 9:24 am : link
5th CB & back-up SS.

What I most wish for (realistically) Vet Swing Tackle.

Power RB would be great but someone worthy of a roster spot probably would require at least a low level trade imo.

He was a 3rd round pick, they aren't going to try to sneak him onto the practice squad. If they thought he was that undervalued by the rest of the league, they would've waited until later in the draft to select him.
I like Casillas
mrvax : 8/17/2017 10:46 am : link
and his only negative I see is that he tends to tackle high which can be an issue with stronger players.
For me,

Yup. Although Conner was a mild surprise at #105, the Steelers took him there for a reason, and not just for hometown pride.

In the same genre, 7th rounder Elijah Hood has generated some buzz in Oakland. I doubt he'll see the waiver wire either, though the 242nd selection is never safe. The Raiders took Hood with the pick immediately after the one NYG dealt to move up in round six for Bisnowaty.

Big UDFA backs more likely to hit waivers include De'Veon Smith (MIA), Corey Clement (PHI), and Tion Green (DET). I'm not sure any of them are better than Khalid Abdullah, who appears headed for the Giants' practice squad, at best.
Not suggesting Abdullah can fill the power back role.

Just using him as a benchmark for the bottom of the current RB depth chart.
