Giants are $9.7 million under the cap after the Thomas pay cut, according to the NFLPA records.
Can now take on a Joe Thomas/Joe Staley type contract.
I wonder what the 49ers would want. I assume picks are a hot commodity to them given next year's draft pool and their dearth of anything resembling NFL quality at the position.

ok this should hold off the BBI money hounds for a few weeks
Usually, a reduction that big is accompanied by a partial guarantee. Otherwise, there isn't much incentive for the player to sign it: he's better off asking for his release. If a significant portion is now guaranteed, it's an indication that Thomas has a pretty good shot at the final roster.
Of course, the Giants might have squeezed him by threatening to delay his release until September, making it much more difficult for him to find a new team; but that's not the way this organization generally operates.
This seems like good news. No downside, really. A healthy Thomas provides versatile depth and a lot of value on special teams.

But if he's healthy, they would have no excuse to keep him out of practice. And if he practices, he could tear an ACL. And if he tore an ACL, the Giants would be on the hook for the whole $3M.
I'm sure his agent made some phone calls and nobody was offering anything more than the minimum. Better for him to stick with the team and the defense he knows.
...and that Thomas has little chance of making the team, despite the reduction? Or are you just making stuff up to be argumentative?

Well, OK - that might have been a concern. But it's pretty easy to limit a player's reps to the point where he would basically have to pull a Derrick Ward (tripping on the steps after practice) to qualify for injured reserve. They don't need an "excuse" to drop a player to the bottom of the depth chart and make him a spectator. See the 49ers' handling of Kaepernick after they wrote him out of their plans.

I have no idea if any of it is guaranteed or not. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if $100K-$300K is guaranteed and my guess is that he'll make the roster if he can stay healthy through the remainder of the preseason. I always thought the Giants would be on the lookout for a veteran LB following cut-down day, but with Thomas at an affordable salary, they won't need to.

It's not as easy as you think with the NFLPA wise to such a tactic. If that was their plan, they would be better off leaving him on PUP until September before giving him the ultimatum.
But no need to explore hypotheticals at this point. This played out as well as could be expected for the Giants.
But no one knows a damn thing about this guy. It's like he has been here for years and has never fucking played. A damn farce. But Casillas turned out to be a player after an extended intro, so maybe we will catch lightning in a bottle again.
I love it when a plan comes together... - ( New Window )
He's not that good. Not that may weaker 4-3 WILLs.
Cap space numbers from the two different sites before this deal takes effect:
OTC: $6,297,245
Spotrac: $5,328,055
JT was due 3 mill with 4 in dead cap space.
So this saves at most 3.2 mill
Saves 2.2 mill at most
Quote:
Sources: Giants LB JT Thomas has taken a pay cut from $2.975M to $775K, with a roster bonus of $20k and $400k if he plays 70% of the snaps.
Saves 2.2 mill at most
that's 2.2 mill more to spend on.. a future camp cut?

He's probably the best LB in covering a TE. If he's healthy and can stay that way, he's an upgrade
Good then on passing downs Robinson and Thomas as the linebackers and then bring in a 3rd safety or corner and stop guys like Witten and Reed !

to be able to pay OBJ down the line?
There's a lot of people to pay besides just OBJ.
Good point.

Recall, he was playing with patches all over him, when he was finally forced to retire.
IF JT can play, he's terrific (I remember how he tore us up when he was with JAX).
If he is done, for sure, I think it will be evident very soon {to the Giants and HIM). I truly hope for the team sake and him that he's OK.
Plus he had the tackle of the year last year on fourth down during that Ravens game. Knocked the blocker back and finished the play. That was amazing.
