I need a good recommendation for a bday gift. He is a educated Scotch drinker. Looking to spend around $50. I am looking for 2-3 recommendations just incase the I can't get one or the other.
The Highland/Speyside choices above are all perfect.
If he's looking for a different flavor profile (ex: peaty), Lagavulin and Laphroig are in your range, and Talisker from the Isle of Skye is different as well.
and came to enjoy it so much that I now buy it on the ground. It's a 12 year aged, sherried Speyside single malt. Reviews quite well compared to some of the usual suspects in the 12 year range and comes in around your price point.
An interesting choice that's not exactly mainstream but holds up well, IMO, and is eminently drinkable. I love Islay whisky but am not always in the mood for a very peaty Scotch. Glenfarclas 12 year - ( New Window )
First question to be answered is: Does he drink single malt or a blend?
Personally, as a blend drinker, I enjoy Johnny Walker Black - far below your price range but extremely popular and enjoyable. If he likes a blend but something higher end, you can go with Green or Blue. If he wants a single malt, go with some of the recommendations above.
you first need to know if he drinks it straight (with maybe a little ice) or mixed with soda or water ... if straight then you go with a single malt (ie Glenlivet); if mixed then any of the upper end blends (JWB, Chivas 12 or Dewars 12) make fine gifts.

Its actually a Highland - that site is incorrect. But I agree, its my go to on United and is a solid pick.

Are you sure it's a Highland? I'm pretty sure Ballindalloch is along the River Spey.
Fabulous medium priced scotch. Prices all over the lot. I just got a case for $39.99/bottle. I have seen it for $70. I like Acnoc, but imo, this is much better.
balvenie 12
Oban
the 12-year should be in your price, range, maybe 14 on the Oban (or maybe just outside your range)

Would also recommend Monkey Shoulder (its a blend) but its really good bang for the buck.
