he may be our only reliable OL heading into next season, depending on how this year plays out. Big decisions will have to be made regarding Flowers, Richburg, and Hart next year.
would like to see Pugh resigned (if healthy). Unfortunately, with the salary cap and the $s that he will probably be seeking, it probably won't be economically possible. Even more so when you consider the money the team is going to have to spend to keep OBJ.
But hearing and seeing how much better Pugh is relative to every other OL on this team, I'd rather keep him than anyone else right now. Richburg looks like a guy who can never be an elite center at this point. Pugh can be elite.
Richburg really has to show up to make the decision harder.
Agree - Pugh has also clearly become the vocal leader
of the OL - and his consistent presence makes Flowers better. How much so, debatable, but it's definitely a factor in the question of who the the Giants plan to spend OL money on next season
Pugh has made it known that he wants a massive contract
1. He stinks. 2. He has a terrible injury history including concussions 3. We actually have a few good players, Collins and Beckham, who will require new contracts soon.
I think the Giants resign him, in part because he can play tackle should the occasion arise. Richburg is purely a center and strength seems to be a problem for him, especially lined up against a NT
I used to think they would not resign him but you cannot let two starters walk on the unit entrusted with keeping Eli safe
go into next year without both him and Richburg (because I'm presuming it will cost a bunch to sign each of them)? How do you compete for a championship when you have Flowers, Hart, Jerry and then two new guys at the only positions of competence on the OL?
We will have to restructure some contracts down the line, as well as shift costs to later years for all of the guys we re-sign, whether the offensive linemen or Collins and OBJ. That's just what's done. I'd rather worry about later cap hell than give up the chance to get another SB in a period where we have such an outstanding defense.
Their two best young players, Beckham and Collins, will no doubt be looking for new deals and their two best OL, on an already shaky unit, set to hit the market. Reese will earn his paycheck for sure.
I think it's fair to say that they'll need to bring back at least one of the two, even if they have to overpay a bit. Which one? Who knows. Waaay too many variables at play right now. Even beyond what Pugh and Richburg do, it will depend on what the market looks like for a G vs C and how our other young OL progress. It also depends on whether or not Flowers or Hart can transition to Guard if they fail at their current positions.
Next year will produce more question marks than this year.....
First, Pugh and Richburg, and even Flowers, have to be healthy all season or this OL is in trouble....it is much easier to replace parts at RT and RG....
Second, why did the Giants use the option year on Pugh? Because they question his health and did not want to get locked into a long term contract last year...
As for Richburg, we are using the excuse that it was an injury that affected his performance last year.....or was it film, that showed him weak with a man right over center?
We judged Flower's poor performance because of his ankle his first season.....no ankle problem and he looked the same last year....
So out of those three draft choices from the first two rounds, who is the lock? Who do you want to build this line on? It's going on 7 seasons with no end in sight....
They'll likely be the best, or among the best, available at their positions. They're young, + starters. Pro Bowlers don't make it to the open market unless they're old or injured.

I think the idea is you can get a guard who can start right away in the second round or at the end of the first
You also have Brett Jones to play center next year. So you draft s center in the mid rounds to be the
Guy longterm
If you sign Pugh, you likely have to cut DRC and it is a lot easier to find s decent guard in the draft than a good CB
More than as T which is what he was touted as. And since teams are over
Paying it's a tough situation as Richberg is up as Mentioned. My guess is whoever they can re-sign at what they seems fair will be back. It not be both. Next years desft has to be very OL heavy. Huge
Issue.
was a shitty pick at #1 and has age and health against him
he will probably not be resigned
Pugh was not a shitty pick. He's been an abv. average G and borderline pro bowler had it not been for his injuries. He's a solid player on OL picked in a draft where more than 50% of the players picked above him have already busted out of the league or well on their way. Including both Joekel and Fisher who went one and two, respectively.
There's only one or two guys I'd at her have over Pugh in that draft and only one I'd rather have who went after he was picked at 19.
He's missed too much time in the last two seasons for me to be comfortable investing 11-12m per for the next 5 years.
Why did you stop at "the last 2 seasons"? Were the games he missed with a bruised thigh acceptable? Fact is, he has only played 16 games a season his rookie year. He misses games that others might play through. Or he has missed more games that others have come back from sooner.
I think he's fragile, an overachiever who has built up his body so it exceeds his frame.
And he's not a monster, not the real rock that you can build on. Nice player, good guy, give you all he has, but not elite and not worth the money he's going to be asking for.
If he was what we thought we were drafting he'd be at OLT now.
I think yu can go into free agency and pick up folks nearly as good for less money...it's OT's that are rare.
Even mere serviceable Olinemen are getting mega bucks.
Richburg really has to show up to make the decision harder.
You are looking at 10-12 million per year potentially. Still have to pay Beckham and Collins coming up...it is hard to pay a guard that much
It seems like the only given is that John Jerry will be back at RG.
A better question is.. is Justin Pugh a player you're willing to overpay in order to keep? Because that's likely what it's going to take.
I think you can draft a start right away center late in the first round.

OT is a bit more difficult.
