It's tough watching

Doug Martin running in a TD, and thinking about Wilson might have been....
Yeah totally
B in ALB : 8/17/2017 8:34 pm : link
especially when TB picked before the Giants in 2012. Stupid Giants. Couldn't re-order the draft to pick Martin. Jerry Reach couldn't trade up and use his crystal ball to know about Wilson's eventual health issue? Idiots.
Not sure how many here
mrvax : 8/17/2017 8:56 pm : link
are aware of this fact: When the 2012 draft started, a NY Giants insider emailed Eric From BBI the Giants favorite pick they thought might be there at pick #32. His name? David Wilson.

I liked what I saw from DW and really thought he'd be a great RB. Sure he needed to work on his blocking and yes, he had 3 career fumbles with 115 carries. Damn that kid was phenomenal with KO returns and just needed a little more time.

Life sucks sometimes.

BTW: DW was a need pick. At the time of the 2012 draft, the Giants had only a crippled Bradshaw signed as a RB.
He had great potential.
yatqb : 8/17/2017 8:57 pm : link
A shame that his career ended before it really began.

Pretty sure he was saying it's tough seeing a RB from that class succeed and not think about what Wilson could have been for us if he didn't have an unfortunate injury.

Thing something is getting lost in translation here ......
It's also..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/17/2017 9:13 pm : link
tough to hear people talk glowingly about Martin while last week they acted as if Sammy Watkins was an invalid on one leg who has never been healthy.
Thinking about what DW might have been...
manh george : 8/17/2017 9:13 pm : link
is a horrible, disgusting activity.

1) It requires thinking.

2) It includes a counterfactual. Counterfactuals are evil. Fake memories.

I remember but have always wondered if in fact they would have taken Martin. The insider could have come back and said "Gosh, no one thought Martin would fall that far".

If I had to guess, I'd say Martin was more TC's kind of back although JR may have liked Wilson better.
I don't get wistful feelings about doug martin
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/17/2017 9:28 pm : link
Nice player. What's the big deal?
Martin had one
BigBlueDownTheShore : 8/17/2017 9:31 pm : link
Good year. Stop fucking whining like a pussy about it. The kid is always injured. If anything we should have grabbed a lineman of some kind with that pick because the line just fell apart after that draft.

Jesse. Yes, I get it. But the comparison is nonsense. One guy got hurt, the other guy is pretty good.

And if you think there's not an overtone of what-if, I'm not sure what to tell you. There were tons of people on BBI bitching about trading up to take Martin.

And I'll submit that Wilson was by far the more explosive back with way more potential. His medical ruined it. Can't use hindsight on that.
that draft
bluepepper : 8/17/2017 9:37 pm : link
was a nightmare and the beginning of our post-46 downward spiral. In hindsight, we should have begun re-stocking the OL. And some good ones were available - next 2 off the board were Mitchell Schwartz and Cordy Glenn.

The OP was NOT making a comparison. He simply said that seeing Martin (because they were in the same draft class) made him think about David Wilson.

Oh ok. Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea.

What's tough is watching Blake Bortles play quarterback, and knowing that he is a millionaire.

Mike Nolan said last season on Sirius that Bortles is terrible and will never be more than average at best.
Bortles is busting before our eyes
Overseer : 8/17/2017 10:19 pm : link
forget the 35 TDs he threw a couple seasons ago. He's not good and Jacksonville will once again be looking for a QB very shortly.

Organizational trainwreck.

LOL. He's bad. He fooled a lot of people 2 seasons ago when he racked up a ton of garbage yardage late in games. He's the Brandon Myers of QB's.

Allen Robinson hates him.
Cordy Glenn should have been the pick.
Optimus-NY : 8/17/2017 10:32 pm : link
Word is he was in the same row as Wilson. He should have been the pick. The guy has been a very productive player in this league and would have strengthened the OL immediately and going forward.
Wilson struggled in many facets of being a lead RB
Jimmy Googs : 8/17/2017 10:49 pm : link
and very well might never have been comfortable it. He cetainly didn't give his coaches a whole lot of confidence.

Solid KR. Supporting RB role yes, lead guy...ehh?
David Wilson was an EXPLOSIVE running back ...
Manny in CA : 8/17/2017 11:15 pm : link

He was going to be the next LeSean McCoy. Remember ?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gl4djQM56Pc

Problem with Wilson, he was damaged goods (history of neck injury in college); the scouts failed to check him out well enough.- and there you have it a blown 1st round pick !

For sure. First round RBs should be game changed no doubt about it guys. Don't think Wilson fit that bill. It when Glenn, Bobby Wagner and Janoris Alshon and Mitchell Schwartz were all there.
Bortles
Go Terps : 8/17/2017 11:37 pm : link
This guy is proof that just because someone is an NFL GM, or scout, or coach, it doesn't mean they know what they're doing.

To follow up Gabbert with Bortles... Give me a fucking break with this joke of a franchise.
I think Bortles is going to turn it around
allstarjim : 8/18/2017 8:54 am : link
I really do. I am biased however. Bortles is a graduate of my high school, so I root for the hometown kid.

He also has the tools to succeed. He just has the yips and needs to get through it. He's the Chuck Knoblauch/Mackey Sasser of the NFL right now.
If he can't make it work now I don't see it happening ever
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/18/2017 9:02 am : link
He's got a fine WR, a workhorse RB and at worst a league average OL.
It would be nice for a Giants RB to see these kinds of holes
pjcas18 : 8/18/2017 9:03 am : link
again, but I admit Wilson's speed had me dreaming. The early fumble stalled his rookie year and the injury ended it.
