Well written piece on Eli Manning by ESPN's Ian O'Connor

Quote:
Eli Manning has not won a single postseason game in 66 months, about the same amount of time it took Tolstoy to write "War and Peace." Manning is 36, and the New York Giants have acknowledged preparing for life without him. For the first time they have drafted a quarterback, Davis Webb, who could be a legitimate threat to take Eli's job.

Manning's 51.8 Total QBR last season ranked 27th in the league, five spots behind Brock Osweiler and four behind Colin Kaepernick. Manning ranked 17th, 14th, and 27th in his three preceding seasons. What does this all mean?

Eli Manning has you right where he wants you in 2017.

A Giants title in 2017? Hey, it'd be peak Eli (again) - ( New Window )

Thoroughly. Now go out and prove 'em all wrong once again Elisha.
Great

article. Thanks. But I still think the Giants were right to draft Webb, especially in the third round. There's just no guarantee that any QB is going to be playing, and still be effective even if they are, at 40, or even in their late 30s.
good piece

had a laugh at this one:

Marshall said Manning will emerge from the showers wearing only a towel and suddenly start giving him signals for calls at the line of scrimmage. "He's probably the most detailed quarterback I've been around," said the 12-year veteran.

Nice job by O'Connor

on this one...
I think the article
PaulBlakeTSU : 8/18/2017 11:42 am : link
paints Eli as too much of a Forrest Gump figure and doesn't do nearly the job to explain the disastrous offensive line/run game situation that would cause any QB's numbers to look pedestrian.

Not me. I knew what we had in mid to late 2005. Defended him constantly as an up n coming young QB that was winning games. As he won more and more the cries lessened but even now fans still critique this guy as if he needs to justify his play.

IN short, many fans are dumb.
I agree with Paul ^^^

To my eyes, Eli has not deteriorated at all. The Oline simply does not provide enough time for him to throw a pass and go through his progressions.
It almost never happens in the NFL...

But I had no idea Eli had a no trade clause.

You have me by 2 years. Eli started to BECOME special to me after the 38-35 loss to the undefeated Pats in '07 regular season-ender

Probably the easiest talking point of Eli's last contract. If we traded you the fans will burn the place down. Hell the Giants probably just threw it in for him, out of respect. I'm kinda joking of course, business is business, but unlike a lot of players I'm sure it wasn't too hard to accept that clause.

Good article. Thanks, gidiefor.

Scepticism,

about young, developing players, like there was against Eli, is still a feature of this site. Landon Collins saw it. Bradshaw saw it. And Flowers is seeing it full blown. But despite this thoughtful article, not reflective of what is in all the annuals and fantasy predictions this summer, Eli has never completely made it past the doubter cohort. Even so, he remains unruffled, game after game meeting difficulty, and producing at a consistent pace, year after year, with low points, true, but with such grace that we all rejoice when he succeeds. This year we can hope for, the 209th start moving past big brother, the third Brady bust SB, some running game, and with Marshall, Engram, Shepard, and OBJ, a passing breakout. A 4000 yard season would be nice. Well worth watching.
It was kind of a vanilla article.....
Doomster : 8/18/2017 12:34 pm : link
But I do agree on one thing.....because of the OL's he has had in front of him, Eli has perfected the chuck and duck move, which has allowed him to keep that consecutive streak alive....I think he has more completions that he has never seen, than any other qb....

Sorry man, would have been there for you if could have been there for you. But I'm firmly established around here with my "Eli is the greatest Giant" ever claim. LT is a still the best football player ever, but he's a huge stain on the organization character wise. Eli's as good as it gets in a pro athlete. Don't know him personally, but he seems like a fine human being as well. I intend to enjoy every single minute that's left of his career. Pretty sure I won't live to another Giant as great as Eli.

You left out Sinorice Moss, Marvin Austin, Andre Williams, Damontre Moore, Reuben Randle, Jerrel Jernigan, Clint Sintum, Ramses Barden, Tim Carter, Travis Beckum, etc, etc, etc....

1000%. Basically what i was saying in the other thread, summed up more nicely by you.

Normally "well written article by Ian O'Connor" is an oxymoron.
still curious
mdc1 : 8/18/2017 1:55 pm : link
if Eli were paid less, what other areas of the team would strengthen. Have a look at the defense as an example, money spent and you go from last to front.

I fear he will be under intense pressure this season as we cannot run the football. Any team that does not max pressure us are foolish.

Don't get me wrong I wasn't guaranteeing future greatness mid 2005 or saying he was a lock to win one let alone two SB titles but I thought the heat he was taking from fans was unfair. He was winning and producing. You can't expect a young QB to come in and dominate no matter how highly he was touted or drafted.

Been saying that all last regular season and this offseason.

He's the same guy. Everything around him has changed. His stats even reflect it other than his TD numbers being down a tad.
