Roster Sleeper - WR Jerome Lane

BigBlueWhale : 8/18/2017 1:08 pm
Every year you get to the preseason games and guys jump out. Happens organically. Sometimes they turn into Cruz sometimes Corey Washington. It's only been 1 game but the guy who jumped out for me was Jerome Lane, who I hadn't given a 2nd thought.

Lots of separation, built like a truck and a bull after the catch. Caught smoothly, away from his body. Came back for the ball. Doing all the little things good football players do. The 3rd string CBs on the Steelers wanted nothing to do with him.

The #6 WR is primarily about special teams. At the Combine Lane measured 6'2" 226 lbs. Average speed (4.6) but excellent quickness (6.87 3-Cone, 4.12 ss). And that's what translates to the field: big, strong and quick. Like Shane Smith, his background as an ex-LB gives him immediate special teams value.

I think Harris/King/Lewis are 4/5/6, but I have a feeling Lane is going to steal one of their spots if he keeps it up.
I think that Powe will beat them all out for the 6th spot, and that

Lane and Randolph will be candidates for the PS.
Why Lewis

He stinks.
yeah, I actually think
santacruzom : 8/18/2017 1:33 pm : link
that neither King nor Lewis are locks.

Agreed. I don't see King as a lock. Certainly not Lewis. Whether Lane can make the roster is of course an entirely different discussion.

speed. he's got issues but our team speed is not good. whoever can run gets an extra look.
I think Beckham and Engram pretty much

fill the need for speed on offense. Not everyone needs to be fast.

I'm already growing tired of Lewis' mental mistakes and concentration issues.
King if he doesnt get healthy

Will not be guaranteed a spot, though I like him. I want nothing to do with Roger Lewis on this team. He dropped far to many passes in move the chain situations last season. Move on
Stranger things have happened.

None of the Big Three will play much in preseason, so there will be opportunities for a dark horse to distinguish himself. The way other candidates have been dropping, Lane might have a shot.
Lewis is a frustrating player.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/18/2017 2:33 pm : link
There have been so many NYG receivers who couldn't get any separation against NFL corners. Lewis does that, which is supposed to be the hard part.
You have OBj, SS, and Marshall.....
Doomster : 8/18/2017 2:42 pm : link
After that, there is a HUGE drop off in talent.....whoever makes plays in the preseason, makes it....but sometimes, it doesn't mean anything...I remember a player named Calhoun, who caught one long pass for a td in preseason, and made the team....he did nothing the rest of the year....

It would be great if a diamond in the rough could be found....we know the limitations of Lewis and King.....hopefully someone outshines them....
Simply put, Lewis has bad hands for WR
Jimmy Googs : 8/18/2017 3:47 pm : link
and that is why he doesn't deserve the spot...
I liked both Lane and K. Johnson in the game.

But Lane is very raw, and whether he can get coached up enough and show enough in the preseason to make the 53 is a long shot. But he's got some things other WR's don't have. As physical as Marshall and Powe are, Lane is a bull. He appears to have Heinz Ward level physicality, with soft hands and good instincts to boot! And if he can play specials too, I hope they can find a spot for him.
Lane way too

I agree. Cut him now. I hope we can see more of KING.

Devin Thomas was never a good WR but his ST value saw that he make the team.

That's why I'd keep him. And then I'll be banging my head against the wall if and when he drops a crucial pass.
The Giants don't need a 6th WR
Milton : 8/19/2017 5:12 am : link
There isn't even a need to dress the 5th WR on Sunday so why have a 6th WR on the 53 man roster? Keep the 6th and 7th receivers on the practice squad as insurance against injuries. These guys are all interchangeable and I don't see any of them becoming the next Victor Cruz.
I like Powe over King and Lewis for the 4th spot.
Ira : 8/19/2017 7:30 am : link
After that Lane has as good a chance as anyone.
Bad hands for a WR = FATAL FLAW
Bob in Newburgh : 8/19/2017 9:02 am : link
It really does not matter what else Lewis can do. He is actually a pretty easy cut.

Unless Lane is a special teams star, or our WRs get decimated by injuries, he has no chance for a roster spot, but is a prime PS candidate, and this is a good thing.
