the off-season. Sure, we can try. But there is an advantage to having him on the team and resigning him versus trading him away and then trying to bring him back. There is a reason why it's not very common. If they want to, I expect it to be more difficult and more expensive. Two things that the Mets don't like.

This is absolutely true. Here is an advantage if a player stays. However, if Bruce stayed the Mets would have offered a QO that he would have declined. Idk, Mets have about 70 million bucks to spend this offseason. They are going to have to spend it somewhere. We will not have a 75 million dollar payroll in 2018.
Also the return for Bruce is Ryder Ryan
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 12:41 pm : link
We don't know what the return is for Walker/Grandy yet.
Payroll
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 12:44 pm : link
figures to be 120-130 currently it's 58.5 + (these are rough estimates)

+6 for Blevins (58.5 doesn't include his option just his 1 million buyout), potentially
+ 6.5 for Cabrera (if they pick up his option)
+ 8 for Ramos
+10 for Familia
+3 for TDA
+1 for Wheeler
+5 for Thor
+7 for Harvey
+700,000 for Robles
+3.5 for Wilmer

So roughly they have

58.5+45 committed without Cabrera and 51 with him so they have a lot more money committed than people realize. They don't have oodles of money to spend
No
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 12:47 pm : link
idea the accuracy but a Brewers site with a supposed insider claims it'a Clint Coulter, was a 1st round pick that moved off catcher and never developed. If it's him he's organizational filler. Not a top 50 prospect in their system on one list, and 35th on sickels Brewers list
I'm just asking but
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 12:52 pm : link
Familia is getting a 10 million dollar raise off of what he's already making this year? Some of those figures seem high.

In any event, I think Cabrera is either traded or his option is not picked up. We might also come to a settlement with Wright.

Mets will sign a minimum of two bats and maybe a reliever.

10 million dollar Raise? No. He's making 7.4. That's a raise of 2.6 million. The Mets 2018 payroll commitment counts the arbitration eligible payers as 0 dollars + 10 million is 2.6 more than what he made this year.
What
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 12:58 pm : link
seems high? If anything I went low based on what players usually get. those aren't raises, that's their total salary which again is counted as 0 when talking about 58.5 committed.
I didn't realize your figure(58.5) wasn't accounting for any
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 1:02 pm : link
arbitration players. Obviously, those numbers would seem high if you were only listing raises. Thanks for clarifying.
58.5
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 1:04 pm : link
accounts for Cespedes, Wright, 2 for Cabrera (buyout), Lagares, Blevins 1 million *buyout). Nothing else

Also, this might be nitpicking but your numbers add up to 103.5 (without Cabrera) and 109.5 (with Cabrera). Where are you getting between 120-130 million? Finally, the Wright situation distorts things a bit. I think he either retires and we give him some sort of buyout similar to Cuddyer (it will be more obviously) or he sits out again. If he doesn't play and we collect insurance we arent paying 20 million for him either way.
Never mind... I guess you are adding
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 1:10 pm : link
another 10 or so to fill out the roster on minimum guys. Got it.
They
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 1:16 pm : link
will have some money to spend for sure but it's not a massive sum. Largely in part to the paperweight that David Wright has become. Wright+ Harvey+Lagares (Lagares when healthy is still solid but 6.5 is high for his role) = almost 35 million, that's quite a bit
Woah
DanMetroMan : 8/19/2017 1:19 pm : link
and I missed Degrom too. oof
Man. 7 million for Harvey almost seems
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 1:19 pm : link
absurd too. I wonder if they choose not to offer arbitration or if they work out a trade?
So

add about 6 to that total I stated.

super annoyed TJ Rivera went down when he did. This would have been a golden opportunity for him.

At least Nimmo should play every day now.

Im on board with a full tank from here on out. A top 5 pick would be pretty awesome.
Ditch Cabrera...
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 1:47 pm : link
1.) Nimmo
2.) Cecchini
3.) Conforto
4.) Cespedes
5.) Smith
6.) Flores
7.) Rosario
8.) TDA/Plawecki

deGrom, Matz, Montero, Gsellman, Flexen (I'd consider shutting down deGrom early)

True. lol. Im just saying, I dont even care if they shut down deGrom in September or flat our release Cabrera at this point. Suck for a top 5!
the payroll issue is so overblown
CMicks3110 : 8/19/2017 1:55 pm : link
there aren't that many players to spend on that are worth spending on? I 've checked teh Free Agent list, we can spend on Moustakas, Cain, or maybe a pitcher like Lance Lynn, and possibly a reliever - though given the investment in minor league arms I think they are hoping that a few develop, plus they will probably move gsellman to the pen which migiht be good for him. Next year's roster right now is

C-d'Arnaud
1B-Smith
2B-TBD/Cabrera
SS-Rosario
3B-TBD/Cabrera
LF-Cespedes
CF-Conforto/TBD
RF-Conforto/TBD

SP-degrom
SP-Syndergaard
SP-Harvey
SP-Matz
SP-Wheeler
SP-Montero*
SP-Lugo*
SP-Gsellman*
SP-Flexen

RP-Familia
RP-Robles
RP-Blevins
RP-Smoker

C-Plawecki
IF-Flores
IF-T.J. Rivera
OF-Nimmo/Lagares
OF-

So, we really need to sort out our starting pitching because I have no idea what we can expect from the likes of Lugo/Matz/Gsellman/Harvey/Wheeler/Flexen, the only two reliable starters are deGrom and Syndergaard who both can be aces, and the others it's a complete crapshoot, they all have talent but are so incredibly injury prone or inconsistent, it's hard to plan.

I think we re-sign reyes as he seems to be a good clubhouse guy, is versatile, has speed, is beloved by the fan base, and by all accounts wants to be here.

So, in terms of expenditures, where do we spend?

Moustakas? eh
Cain? maybe
Bruce? I wouldn't be against it, not sure he would sign back
CarGo? 1 year maybe he was dreadful this year?
Gomez? Pass
Todd Frazier? Pass

There is just no supply of players to spend on. And our farm system is barren at this point.

The team really has no options but to hope that certain players performance improves back to historical levels (cespedes, harvey, matz) and that some players take a leaps (rosario, smith) and others continue to blossom (conforto)

Otherwise, I see a .500 team with no particular direction.

From the Way their deals are going, they likely would have dealt for lesser prospects and cash. They are an embarrassment.

ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 2:18 pm : link
Bruce, Moose, and Joe Smith and I'm good to go.
I have a hunch a few pitchers are going to finish the year strong (Montero, Flexen, Gsellman, Matz) making filling out the backend less of a concern. If that doesn't happen then it would be preferable to sign another SP. I know Yu Darvish is a pipe dream...

Eric on Li : 8/19/2017 2:42 pm : link
Bruce would be ok at a discount price, but I really hope they do a few creative things this winter to find younger more athletic players. Cain is by far the best FA fit, but the age/contract length will determine whether or not that's a smart move. At 3B I think we're going to see some combo of Cabrera/Flores/Rivera, and I don't think that's the wrong move. Cabrera's proven he can play here and get big hits, plus last year was as good as any year of Moose's career until this year - it's always risky buying off a career year price.
Im not a big Moose fan either
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 3:05 pm : link
But I badly want a stabilizing presence at 3B. No more adventure throws. Flores/TJ/Cheech can compete for 2B.

Wish him nothing but the best.

Is here!
The Mets position is very similar to the 2014 Braves team
Jay on the Island : 8/19/2017 5:01 pm : link
They were a declining team with a weak farm system. They were caught in a tough spot on whether to compete for 1 more season, as Justin Upton, Evan Gattis, and Jason Heyward were going into the final years of their contracts, or to go all in and rebuild. The Mets don't have the luxury of trading away guys like Simmons, Kimbrel, Heyward, and Upton but they could get a very nice return for Degrom and perhaps Cespedes if they went all in. They could focus on building around Thor, Conforto, Rosario, and Smith as the Braves did with Teheran, Freeman, and Albies.
Sorry
Jay on the Island : 8/19/2017 5:03 pm : link
Gattis was not going into the final year of his deal.
The Mets teams is actually too young
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 5:12 pm : link
The entire rotation is under 30 and that includes about 9 guys. The entire pen is young outside of maybe Blevins. The lineup tonight has 6 guys in it that are well under 30 and all home grown outside of Cespedes (soon to be 7 when Cheech replaces Cabrera). The Mets already had their rebuild. It allowed them to acquire chips like Syndergaard and wait on their first-round picks to all hit the stage like Conforto.

I see no reason why we would need to go on another rebuild. If anything we need to get older. This team will badly need some seasoned vets sprinkled in next year to help guide all these youngsters.
The hardest building blocks to get
ZGiants98 : 8/19/2017 5:17 pm : link
The Mets already have heading into next year.

They have two of the top 10 aces in all of baseball heading up their rotation.

They have a top 5 closer.

They have a nasty one two punch in the middle of the order in Conforto/Cespedes

They have what appears to be a world class young SS.

They just need to fill in the roster with good role players and complementary players and get some luck in the health department for once. It shouldn't be impossible to get us back competitive again in 2018.

I'd bring back Reyes for no more than a million bucks for the bench.

Cabrera would already be gone if he wasn't such an abomination. -0.9 fWAR makes him arguably the worst player in all of baseball. Sandy cant unload him. Nobody wants him and they certainly dont want to pay to buy out his option. I think Cabrera is gone next year one way or the other. Sandy will buy it out if he has to but he's likely praying somebody will want him before the months out first.

I don't think I'd call Familia a "top 5 closer" right now - I'm not even sure he was that before he got hurt. Now he's got to re-establish himself.
we need another big bat int he middle of the order
CMicks3110 : 8/19/2017 5:24 pm : link
IMO, and a third reliable starter, which is why i would spend for Lynn in the off-season. I would also try to sign another bullpen arm and then let the remaining slots compete, hoping a few of the bazzillion rhrp prospects turns into something.

He was in 2015/2016 statistically. Of course he has to prove himself again but I don't really see how a blood clot is going to derail him. Guess we'll find out soon.

And No way are they picking up Cabreras option.

So that is about 21.5 million more. But I think Dans point still stands: Mets are likely not going to be big players in free agency.

In regard to Moose, Sandy is a big fan of lefty power hitters but I just don't see them spending what it will take

Frankly I think you're generally better off waiting till January and hunt for some bargains. Usually some good players have ended up without a landing spot.

For 2017 off-season 2018 season or just in general. 2017 off-season for 2018 season I agree, bargain hunting, short-term deals should be the only consideration. shore up the BP, maybe get a CF or 3B on a one-year deal and roll the dice again.

But I'd like to see the Mets make a push for Machado after next season.

Such a good fit, missing piece at 3B, and could become a FA.

Otherwise if you trust your talent evaluators then sure bargains can be had in January.
