But, damn, Sandy is really cleaning house, which is smart imo.!Get rid of the stench of 2017. Get the young guys playing time and don't let mail it in vets serve as bad role models late in a meaningless part of the season
and solid contributor go. Understand he needed to go but it's never any fun saying goodbye to a guy like that.
Sadly I will not be able to root for him to win a World Series is my hatred for the Dodgers is nearly as great as my hatred for the Yankees. Sorry. Play my dad who was a New York baseball Giants fan as a kid. Just the house I grew up in. LOL. Hoping that Granderson those great the rest of the way and that they lose and heartbreaking style in some way along the path. 😃
Beez same here grew up in Brooklyn but as a Giant fan

Cab is probably staying as insurance for 3rd base. The option is reasonable
I've never seen a team empty their useful players for a bigger collection of junk. Can't wait to see what low A ball, crappy relief pitcher we got for Grandy.

They were not resigning any of the players they traded away.
It's a smart move to get something for them even if it is a low A relief pitcher

True, but just because they weren't resigning the players doesn't mean they have to give them away. The Mets always seem to sell their players for cents on the dollar. Time for a regime change.
Brought back great prospects. This just isn't the year. JD Drew was traded for garbage also and he's a better hitter than anyone we traded. It is what it is this year. Saturated market for power bats.
and Dickey was the Cy Young winner. Big difference.
I agree that it's just not the season but I still feel like Mets always sell low on their players. Maybe it's just the recency effect of our shitty fire sale this season but I'm tired of making these deals that are centered on saving money. But it is a business I guess.

The only player I fault the Mets for trading is Bruce. IMO they did not get a good return for Reed and we have yet to see what the return for Bruce is but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Bruce could have been a key player for the Mets next year especially at 1B if Smith doesn't improve. The Mets lost a lot of offense by trading away Bruce, Duda, Walker, and Granderson that they won't be replacing with prospects. This will put a lot of pressure on them to add several bats to the lineup which they won't be able to do. I am not looking to get into any arguments but I think the Mets are going to be lucky to win 80 games next season.
for Beltran. He was having a great year and rentals were more valuable then. Wheeler looks like a bust.
Wheeler was an incredible return for a Beltran rental. That was a win-win trade as Beltran was a key player in their championship run. Wheeler had FOR potential but will never be that pitcher due to all the time he missed due to injury.

Wheeler was the number eleven prospect in baseball and I'd hesitate calling any player that made it to the majors a bust. I also seem to remember people being over Beltran. He was coming off multiple injury plagued seasons, could no longer play CF.... the consensus was he was at the end of the line and we stole that trade. Yes, then Beltran went on to have an amazing bunch of years between 35-40 but it was unexpectedly IMO.

If they stand pat you are absolutely right but why can't we sign Bruce in the offseason? He was pretty vocal about loving the team and fans. Mets are going to sign back at least two veteran bats. I think Bruce will be considered.
What does being over Beltran have to do with the return
people expected for him. He was having a great season and was one of the premiere outfielders in baseball. He should have netted a big return. And I do view Wheeler at the time as a big return. I was fine with that trade.
You can't expect a big return on walk year players anymore
Teams that traded for them used to be able to reap 1 or 2 high draft picks as compensation when they left in free agency in the offseason. Essentisly teams were trading for the player PLUS the picks. That drove offers higher.
Now they get no picks. So it's just the math on what a two month rental is worth.
We have no idea what these returns are going to amount to
the off-season. Sure, we can try. But there is an advantage to having him on the team and resigning him versus trading him away and then trying to bring him back. There is a reason why it's not very common. If they want to, I expect it to be more difficult and more expensive. Two things that the Mets don't like.

Fair point

I'm just saying I didn't expect Beltran to have a lot of value. Yes, he was having a bounce back season but I thought he was considered injury prone. I think he even missed a couple weeks prior to the deadline but I'd have to check.

This is absolutely true. Here is an advantage if a player stays. However, if Bruce stayed the Mets would have offered a QO that he would have declined. Idk, Mets have about 70 million bucks to spend this offseason. They are going to have to spend it somewhere. We will not have a 75 million dollar payroll in 2018.
figures to be 120-130 currently it's 58.5 + (these are rough estimates)
+6 for Blevins (58.5 doesn't include his option just his 1 million buyout), potentially
+ 6.5 for Cabrera (if they pick up his option)
+ 8 for Ramos
+10 for Familia
+3 for TDA
+1 for Wheeler
+5 for Thor
+7 for Harvey
+700,000 for Robles
+3.5 for Wilmer
So roughly they have
58.5+45 committed without Cabrera and 51 with him so they have a lot more money committed than people realize. They don't have oodles of money to spend
idea the accuracy but a Brewers site with a supposed insider claims it'a Clint Coulter, was a 1st round pick that moved off catcher and never developed. If it's him he's organizational filler. Not a top 50 prospect in their system on one list, and 35th on sickels Brewers list
Familia is getting a 10 million dollar raise off of what he's already making this year? Some of those figures seem high.
In any event, I think Cabrera is either traded or his option is not picked up. We might also come to a settlement with Wright.
Mets will sign a minimum of two bats and maybe a reliever.
10 million dollar Raise? No. He's making 7.4. That's a raise of 2.6 million. The Mets 2018 payroll commitment counts the arbitration eligible payers as 0 dollars + 10 million is 2.6 more than what he made this year.
seems high? If anything I went low based on what players usually get. those aren't raises, that's their total salary which again is counted as 0 when talking about 58.5 committed.
I didn't realize your figure(58.5) wasn't accounting for any

Also, this might be nitpicking but your numbers add up to 103.5 (without Cabrera) and 109.5 (with Cabrera). Where are you getting between 120-130 million? Finally, the Wright situation distorts things a bit. I think he either retires and we give him some sort of buyout similar to Cuddyer (it will be more obviously) or he sits out again. If he doesn't play and we collect insurance we arent paying 20 million for him either way.
will have some money to spend for sure but it's not a massive sum. Largely in part to the paperweight that David Wright has become. Wright+ Harvey+Lagares (Lagares when healthy is still solid but 6.5 is high for his role) = almost 35 million, that's quite a bit
Sadly I will not be able to root for him to win a World Series is my hatred for the Dodgers is nearly as great as my hatred for the Yankees. Sorry. At least Nimmo should play every day now.
Im on board with a full tank from here on out. A top 5 pick would be pretty awesome.
2.) Cecchini
3.) Conforto
4.) Cespedes
5.) Smith
6.) Flores
7.) Rosario
8.) TDA/Plawecki
deGrom, Matz, Montero, Gsellman, Flexen (I'd consider shutting down deGrom early)
At least Nimmo should play every day now.

Whether you're on board or not they are in full tank mode now lol.

True. lol. Im just saying, I dont even care if they shut down deGrom in September or flat our release Cabrera at this point. Suck for a top 5!
