DL Jordan Williams - Player to Watch?

gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2017 9:05 am
In the past week Jonathan Casillas did an interview with Patti Traina and Ed Valentine where he predicted that Jordan Williams (another Jets castoff) will be surprise player of the season -

- today Jordan Raanan writes that he has a legit shot to make the roster

Quote:
He’s more than just the awesome first name. Williams has been a play-wrecker this summer. He’s flashed a quick first step and strong pass-rush ability. This is what the Giants' defense needs, a lineman who can provide pass rush from the interior. Williams has a legitimate chance.

Williams, 24, was undrafted in 2015 out of Tennessee. He has spent parts of the past two seasons with the Dolphins and Jets. He dropped weight this offseason and “feels faster.” It’s showing on the field. He had three tackles and a sack in the preseason opener, when he thought he looked more comfortable. He’s a player to watch as the preseason progresses.

in the Pitt game.
Agreed.

I had Jerome Lane as my top sleeper but Jordan Williams is "the guy" on the other side of the ball. He jumps out. Apparently he was impressive for the Dolphins too but lost out to a stacked DE rotation.

I didn't like what I saw from Okwara last week. Glued to blocks, no pass rush. No special power. Just like Lewis, King and Harris need to be careful of Lane, Okwara needs to be careful of Williams.

Okwara isn't good enough to loaf through the preseason and he really wasn't all that great last year. Just showed promise. If he can't build on that, see ya later.
Okwara

came from nowhere. Hadn't played much at Notre Dame, undrafted, put into the lurch and showed well in his second year. Seems reasonable to expect improvement from him and I wonder if this doesn't make OO a sure goner and if it's not Wynn who goes on the bubble.
We have got to cut the plays the Vernon and JPP are on the field for. Many people think that JPP's injury was from playing too many minutes. True or not, it has to be concern.
But I still think Okwara will be part of the answer and not the problem.
Can only be a good thing

This guy has some versatility as well, he can long snap and that's pretty intriguing because Deoisse , great guy and all, is just a long snapper and does nothing else.

Definitely a chance to get more out of a roster spot, although Deoisse is very good at what he does and a great citizen off the field as well.

DeOssie does way more than long snap -- he excels on all special teams - he's often in on the tackles on KOs and PRs
Make the roster instead of who?

I find it hard to believe any of the top five of OV, JPP, Okwara, Moss and Wynn could be in jeprody. He could make it as sixth DE over Taylor. 10 DL, 6 LB, 9 DB is 25 for the D. That leaves 25 spots for the O which is pretty standard but probably makes them choose between a fourth TE and a FB. Certainly doable. That's quite a dark horse on a unit as loaded as DE. Interesting.

I don't think that Wynn is a lock. Wynn did have a good game in the opener but he was also playing against 2nd and 3rd teamers so of course he should play well. If Williams shows pass rush ability then I would rather go with him and his upside over Wynn who only has 0.5 sacks over his past two seasons combined.

Wynn - like Hertzlich - keeps sticking around. He does a lot of things right -- and especially on special teams -- do not overlook the value of his role on special teams -- there are players that make the team solely on their special teams ability and if they offer other position play - it's a bonus. Wynn is one of those special teams guys and it will be very hard to unseat him.
Wynn & Okwara

could have trade appeal to a team like NE that just lost a top draft pick that they were relying on to play a lot of snaps at DE

We need help at OT, LB, CB

Maybe it is time to start looking to trade quality depth at positions of strength for quality depth at positions of weakness

Pat Graham is our DL coach and started out in NE so maybe that could help out the process if we did want to trade with NE.

Williams has an Ease of movement

That others don't have. Wynn, I think, would be the guy displaced. If he gets some burn against the ones, we know he's got a chance.
Williams seems like a PS guy

No?

His one big play sack he wasn't even blocked. It's not like he had to battle for that.
