Game day active roster question

bigblue1124 : 8/19/2017 9:42 am
With all of the added emphasis regarding injuries, concussions and player safety why has the NFL not allowed the game day roster to be the entire 53 rather than only dress 46? I would think with added depth on the bench it would help decrease injuries as well possible long term effects with head injuries?

IMV a large amount of players with injuries and more importantly mild concussions go back into the game when they shouldn’t. Knowing regardless of the position fake it or attempt to pass the protocol because they know the drop-off from them and their backup and do not want to let their teammates down. In addition teams would be even more hesitant taking a chance on putting a player back in the game knowing they have more option available.

I am curious what others thoughts are on this and why the game day roster is cut down period? It really makes no sense to me not dressing everyone unless it's about money?
Simple

Money
I agree that if your on the 53 roster

you should dress and be eligible to play in games.

Money? Huh?

It is simple. You answered your own question. If more players are hurt then it throws off the competitive balance. You think it would be fair for one team to dress 46 and another team to dress 53?

Apparently you feel different than I.
We all know every team has healthy scratches on game day some more than others. I get what you are saying in regards to multiple injuries on some teams but again how does that change anything in regards to health and safety? 46 or 53 really does not mean anything does it? It is still the same amount of players for every team just more available.

And on that note

If said team has a large amount of injuries I guess that should bring into discussion practice squad players and the ability to bring them up and play rather than cut or IR someone to make the room for them and the ability to place them back if needed rather than cut the player.
I think you are missing the point.

The reason that there are 46 players dressed on game day is because they know some players will be banged up. Yes, sometimes there are healthy scratches but sometimes injured players are dressed because they need to get to the 46 players. I am not talking about like an ACL injury but just a player banged up. If it is severe enough a player will probably go to IR and another player signed.

The reason this rule was implemented was to keep the game as fair as possible. I don't understand the confusion here.
The 46 has nothing to do with health amd safety.

It is purely to have an even playing field. The NFL cannot just changes rules whenever they want. The solution would be to expand rosters but if you expand rosters it isn't that simple. One of the big hold ups during the last CBA was what percentage of money the players get. If rosters expand then the players are going to want more money. It isn't a simple solution.
Excuse My Ignorance,

but does a healthy scratch receive the same compensation as an active player?
I think the best safety issue

is to limit the number of plays in a game.. The passing game has lengthen the game with incomplete clock stopping.... If one team has 46 healthy players and the other 53 I don't think matters... Plays is the issue, less plays less chance to get hurt... I think 1 thing overdue is eliminating the 2:00 Minute warning....

As just answered, yes, generally speaking, although a veteran's contract can be structured in such a way that gameday bonuses are the majority of the compensation, as was true of Victor Cruz last year.

Even presuming we are talking of the general case, money still plays into the issue. That's because proposals for expanding the gameday active list have proposed allowing practice squad players to fill in to prevent an injury situation from creating an inequity. And practice squad players do not get paid regular gamechecks, in the normal course.
