Cut Down Will Be a Killer This Year

Samiam : 8/19/2017 12:28 pm
Every year here for a few years people comment that the Giants will be losing talent on cut down day even though the team was not any good. This year looks like it will happen unless a bunch of guys will find their way to the PS. And even then, some veterans not eligible will probably be cut.

I don't remember how cut down went in the years after the 2 last Super Bowls. Did we lose anybody we wanted to keep? I think this year just might be the most talented in a long time except for the OL but that's a different thread.
Yes it will
Jay on the Island : 8/19/2017 12:33 pm : link
be worse this year than in years past. At least two out of Devin Taylor, Kerry Wynn, Odi, and Jordan Williams will be cut along with either Gettis or Brett Jones. Will Tye is looking like the odd man out at TE. There is only 1 WR spot for Darius Powe, Roger Lewis, and Jerome Lane.
I'm going to argue that
gidiefor : Mod : 8/19/2017 12:43 pm : link
Defensive End cut downs - will see us lose one or two potentially reasonably good players -- in the other areas -- eh -not so much.

Tye, while reliable, is a bubble player. The WRs are flawed after our first 4
We don't have enough depth at CB, S or LB for it to be a worry
LaCosse -- eh maybe
RBs -- no
OLine - no
QBs -- not really

The only issues I see are DE and possibly WR.
robbieballs2003 : 8/19/2017 1:01 pm : link
After that there really isn't an area on this team where I would be concerned with losing a player like Tye.
Its a good

problem to have.
I'm thinking that we may have to add to LB position
idinkido : 8/19/2017 1:12 pm : link
which may cost the Giants a lost of depth at another position, even QB.

Can't see them adding to LB. After the top 4 of Kennard, Goodson, Castillas and Robinson there isn't much. Two of Herzlich, Thomas, Skinner and Munson but why add another.
As tough as the cuts are we could use depth
larryflower37 : 8/19/2017 1:51 pm : link
At Linebacker, TE, and RB.
I wish they would only keep 2 QB's.
If Manning goes down we are not winning with any of the current back ups so just keep the kid and free up a spot for another position.
After the starters,
Doomster : 8/19/2017 2:03 pm : link
there is not much depth on this team.

The cuts will only be hard in the sense, those those cut are close in talent to those that manage to survive....

This is one thing that will make the preseason interesting -- if Webb can be effective not only out of the shotgun.

Maybe LB but TE and RB! Really? TE might have the best depth on the team and Perkins, Vereen, Gallman and Darkwa and similarly deep. You could make a better case for needing depth at WR or S.

And sure if Eli is gone so is the season but what about gone for only one or two games. A decent backup might win one instead of giving that away with a rookie. That's all they would need.
If you don't have any leftovers,
KeoweeFan : 8/19/2017 2:35 pm : link
you didn't make enough food!

You probably have to be Italian to understand how that saying applies to this post ;-)

(Nona Jerry is saying "Mangia, Mangia; don't blame ME if you go away hungry!")
If you want to find out just how good the players are that get cut
Sy'56 : 8/19/2017 2:37 pm : link
Simply look to see if they get picked up by someone else

As I mentioned above this is just nonsense. There is some very good depth on this team. The WR with King go 5 deep, the TE go 4 deep, RB 4 deep as well. The D is even more well stocked. The DE go 5 deep and may keep 6, the DTs are 4 deep, at CB 4 deep as well. At S last year's starter is a backup so at least 3 deep there. Heck, given they play with 2 LBs the great majority of the time having 4 that can play isn't that bad either. If this team isn't considered reasonably deep no team in the league is.

Really. TE Is deep. First time in years DE is very deep. Or since they had Osi Tuck and MS have they been this deep.

CB. ? Two All Pro types a Apple looking like a stud and Hunter doing very well by all accounts how many teams have that level of depth there.

And not many teams have depth beyond one or two guys begin the starters?
There is no depth anywhere in the league, to be honest.
Ten Ton Hammer : 8/19/2017 2:47 pm : link
. One team's 'depth' can alternatively be seen as players who we haven't actually even seen play.
I see two rounds of cuts around the league:
TC : 8/19/2017 3:55 pm : link
In the first round, teams cut to 53. In the second round, they cut more players to pick up players at PON cut by other teams.
Giants should just keep
NikkiMac : 8/19/2017 7:46 pm : link
Eli and Webb at the QB position, everybody else is playing their rookie QB's every time I turn on NFL network I see Peterman ,Mahomes, Dobbs etc .put him in and let him play more in the preseason we are going nowhere with Johnson or Smith this will open up Shane Smith for FB at least
BillT, Not sure if our 4 best LBs can stay healthy
idinkido : 8/19/2017 9:15 pm : link
We may need to pick up a cut vet from another team and may need an extra LB if Giants are concerned about injury issues.
BillT, Just saw your last point
idinkido : 8/19/2017 9:19 pm : link
and it is sound thinking, especially the point about using 2 LBs in passing situations.
I'm for keeping just Webb to backup Eli
TommytheElephant : 8/19/2017 10:11 pm : link
If the unthinkable should happen - is Geno/Josh Johnson going to really take us to where we need to be?

I think DE Wynn & Taylor make it; Odi is the odd man out due to his issues and lack of overall development.
Lane s/b an easy cut
Bob in Newburgh : 8/20/2017 8:06 am : link
You want this player on the PS this year, not the roster.

Based on draft status and unspectacular athleticism, it is unlikely that a waiver claim would be made.
I'm fine letting Webb focus on development
UberAlias : 8/20/2017 8:07 am : link
We're hardly talking about a difference maker in the last man on the roster. Webb figures to be Eli's successor and franchise QB if all works out. His development is far more important.
I will preface this by saying I really like Tye.
Matt M. : 8/20/2017 8:15 am : link
But, the reality is he is anew OK backup who was forced to start. It isn't a great loss to cut him and he isn't the type of player who seems likely to be the one who got away on another team.

I also don't get the love for Lewis. I am not enamored with his speed because that is his only plus. He has shown inconsistent to bad hands, still needs a lot of work running routes, and also struggles with making adjustments. I am 100% fine letting him go. He is another one who isn't going on to start for anyone.
A few positions have some tough decisions
UConn4523 : 8/20/2017 8:25 am : link
but I wouldn't describe it as killer. Maybe compared to a few years back when it seemed like the talent was minimal, but the cuts we are facing now should be normal.
way more with UConn than Jay
ColHowPepper : 8/20/2017 8:43 am : link
Jay, those WRs you list as at risk, really? They're marginal players more or less on a par with each other, that's the only tough part of selecting whom to cut.

Other than TE, a shocking change, and DL, I don't see the angst. Agree with poster above (Bill, or SGMan?) that OO is likely gone, just a host of issues, injury prone, little improvement (in part due to not being able to stay on the field), and whatever personal issues he is fighting through. Take time off young man for yourself.

And Jones vs Gettis and rest of the OL backups, we just hope that the coaching staff reads it right as to who develops over time, but it's not as if there clearly is a budding star we'd hate to lose.
Agreed shouldn't be a killer, and what a nice problem to have
Jimmy Googs : 8/20/2017 8:43 am : link
if you feel it really is.

We are finally behind all of those awful post-Super Bowl drafts and the roster is clearly improved at the starter level, as well as pretty good a few rungs down at a bunch of positions. But to get to 53 it seems like the Coaches, imv, only have "tough" decisions at maybe:

- Defensive End: which of these backups are contenders vs pretenders
- Wide Receiver: who can continue to develop while sitting
- Cornerback & Safety: who would be the least embarrassing if they had to play
- Linebacker: needs changeover concentrated to youth
