Head Coach Ben McAdoo

August 19, 2017

Q: What are you looking to get out of the second preseason game?

A: We want to stack some success with the way the game management went last week. We had 11 guys on the field each play, and that is easier said than done in the first preseason game. And just keep continuing to build. Go good to great on defense. Offense, be more productive. We are going to have everybody in the mix there and special teams, continue to improve.

Q: “Everybody” meaning everyone on the roster?

A: All of the guys who aren’t out.

Q: How much do you want Eli Manning and the starters to play?

A: We would like to give him a big chunk of playing time into the second quarter. We will take a look at it as it goes. We will handle it very similarly to how we handled it last year.

Q: Do you want to get all four quarterbacks in there?

A: Ideally, yes.

Q: Do you know who will be the second quarterback?

A: Yes.

Q: Can you share that?

A: No.

Q: Is it a feel thing or a number of plays when determining how many series those guys get?

A: You want to take the number of plays into consideration. That is always important. But also that we have three games in 11 days, that factors as well with some travel in there in two out of the three games. We want to take a good look at some guys in the middle and the bottom end of the roster and give guys who are competing for spots and jobs an opportunity to prove themselves.

Q: Does success with the starters weigh into that, too?

A: Yeah, every time you step on the field, you want to be successful. We are not going out there to be anybody’s scout team.

Q: Does that factor into their playing time? Will you pull them out if it looks like they are doing a good job?

A: We will take it on a series-by-series basis as far as that goes.

Q: You said a good chunk into the second quarter, does that apply to all of the starters, and a guy like Odell, who did not play in the first game?

A: We are going to be consistent. We are going to treat everyone differently.

Q: We have seen LB B.J. Goodson play in some sub packages, is that just to expose him to it or do you really think he can play that role?

A: We have had some linebackers who have been nicked up, so it’s been a great opportunity for B.J. to get out there and play base and sub.

Q: What have you seen from him in the sub?

A: That it is not too big for him.

Q: Did LB Keenan Robinson suffer another concussion yesterday?

A: Keenan is back in the protocol.

Q: Was there anything specific that prompted that?

A: That’s the information I got from the medical staff.

Q: So, he was cleared, practiced, and then went back in?

A: Yes.

Q: LB J.T. Thomas seems like he has been doing the same things he has been doing since he’s been on PUP?

A: He’s progressing, he’s progressing.

Q: Are all the guys who didn’t practice yesterday, specifically WR Darius Powe, not going to play?

A: Darius looks like he’ll be out at this point.

Q: WR Dwayne Harris?

A: Dwayne Harris looks like he’ll be out.

Q: CB Eli Apple?

A: Questionable, we’ll see.

Q: Are you guys working on anything for the Cowboys? How early does that planning start?

A: I won’t give you that information.

Q: The team that’s on Hard Knocks this year, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, do you have anybody in the building looking at that and trying to take advantage of it?

A: We have a lot of HBO fans in the building. I’m sure we’ll have a couple breakdowns on them and Game of Thrones.

Q: If given the opportunity to be on Hard Knocks, do you believe most of the team would embrace it?

A: This doesn’t have anything to do with the game this week.

Q: Are you interested to see how your tackles hold up against a talent like Cleveland’s Myles Garrett?

A: Yeah, I’m excited. We have good competition going at the offensive tackle spot, and Cleveland has some good rushers. So, I’m excited to get out there on a big stage for a preseason game and see how we perform.

Q: What do you know about Myles Garrett?

A: Talented young player. Very rangy, tremendous skill set. First pick in the draft, that says a lot.

Q: Even though it’s a preseason game, with the trappings of a Monday night game, can you take something out of that because you have a lot of primetime games?

A: One thing we talked to our guys about early on, we talked about this out here, that this is a schedule we all dreamed of. We have five weeks where we really have a similar-type schedule, everything else is kind of a little bit different. We’re going to embrace that. It’s a great opportunity for us and we’re excited to play football on big stages.

Q: How much do you want to see from the rookies? Do you try to get them in more during preseason because you feel like they need the snaps?

A: No, I mean, you play some guys a little longer than other guys. Basically, the guys who are all fighting for jobs, you want to give them an opportunity to earn a job. Age doesn’t matter there.

"We had 11 guys on the field each play..."

They're part Big Bill, part Little Bill, part TC with a level of western PA respect. The answers have little value as they should. I predict years of success for Coach Mac.
One of his best PC's ever. Nice balance of insight, humor

and discipline. Despite having plenty of opportunities to be sarcastic or dismissive towards the reporters, he seemed to say things with a smile.
