The Mets need to rebuild most of their bullpen plus add another veteran SP for depth. A guy like RA Dickey would be ideal but the Braves are likely to pick up his option. The NL East should also be much tougher next season as the Phillies can't get worse, the Marlins have new owners who will actually look to spend some money to improve, and the Braves will see the arrival of several of their top prospects including CF Ronald Acua, SP Mike Soroka, SP Luiz Gohara, SP Kolby Allard, SP Max Fried, RP AJ Minter, and possibly SP Touki Toussaint, and SP Kyle Wright.
Again...
ZGiants98 : 8/20/2017 11:48 am : link
I really dont think the Mets need a "depth guy". Matz, Harvey, Wheeler, Gsellman, Montero, Flexen, Lugo... How many more "depth guys" do we need?

I maintain that if we lose deGrom or Syndergaard again we are going to be in trouble. I only see the rotation really upgraded if you can somehow add a TOR starter to hedge against a disaster happening again. Guys like Lynn/Cobb make me nervous also. Both guys coming off major injuries not having the best years. They just sound like more of the same and I think Lynn is going to cost a lot.

At this point, I'd probably just stand pat on the rotation.

Adding one big reliever would make our pen dominant on paper.

Famila
McGee
Ramos
Blevins
Sewald

Harvey, Wheeler, Matz, Lugo, Gsellman, Montero, Flexen (Yes some of these guys will end up in the pen) PLUS all the guys we just added like Callahan and Drew Smith...

I just don't understand why you would want to go into next year in the same position as you did this season. Matz has struggled and once again been injury plagued. The same with Harvey and Wheeler. Gsellman took a huge step back this season. Lugo is injured and he wasn't pitching well for the Mets not to mention his limited upside. Montero has been one of the few bright spots but is he a sure thing? What happens if he returns to being the pitcher that he was prior to this recent string of success? Flexen has some potential but he has back of the rotation potential and he obviously isn't ready for the majors. Degrom and Thor are the only sure things and if one of them goes down the Mets would be finished.
Yes deGrom and Syndergaard are the only sure thing
ZGiants98 : 8/20/2017 12:34 pm : link
And they are both aces.

For one, Montero and Flexen weren't factors heading into 2017 so you've added two more options than you had before. Gsellman literally just had his 24th birthday and was a rookie this year. He also doesn't have an arm injury issues. He had a rough start but Im not convinced he couldn't at least be considered backend depth. Matz is going through a horrid stretch but his "stuff" is there. We've also seen much longer dominant good stretches from him. We'll see how that shakes out. Harvey and Wheeler shouldn't be counted on anything but the reality is they do likely factor in somewhere.

You have 9 starters all with varying degrees of talent. Yes some have a lot of injury issues but they still likely offer as much upside as some of the backend options people are suggesting on the market.

Also for the record, Im not opposed to improving the rotation. I just think a TOR does a lot more than a backend guy.
Lynn 4.78 FIP just missed a year to Tommy John
ZGiants98 : 8/20/2017 12:39 pm : link
Cobb 4.38 FIP just missed two years to injury ala Wheeler.

I just feel like as soon as we sign these guys everyone will be saying... Cant count on any of these injury prone players! Crucify Sandy!

Yup and that's the kind of "depth move" I could get on board with. If I see value that he could do well in the pen and still add rotation "depth" at the same time, it could be worth it.

Or maybe he's just a heavyset guy. Not everyone's got the same metabolism. It's possible that it's just tougher for him to keep weight off without working very hard at it. I understand the criticism because you don't see pro athletes struggle with weight a lot. At least in baseball (more common with pitchers, of course).

BS. He will go stretches when he's losing and minimize fried. But that's a bunch of bullshit lol
I'd be fine with Liriano
pjcas18 : 8/20/2017 2:07 pm : link
too, but the price difference between a guy looking to be a starter vs a guy who figures to be a LOOGY is probably different.

Liriano is pitching in the pen now with HOU and not sure he's dominating.

but he's the kind of player the Mets are likely or should be likely to gamble on.

He lost 24 pounds in the off-season but packed most of it back on in-season. He was never heavy before going pro. He's acknowledged a poor diet in the past (loving Mexican food) and having his mom and sister move in with him to cook for him when he was in St. Lucie to improve how he ate so I think this is all about eating habits. You just don't see 6'0 245 pound players very often (I've heard he's more like 5'10-5'11) not that it matters.

He made it sound like the Mets aren't the ones pushing him to get into shape, that it's for him (that's fine of him to say) but you know the Mets have spoken to him as well. I suspect he comes into camp next year looking much better, lets hope he can stick with it.

don't mind all these bullpen arms, yes I'd hoped for more, but whatever, I don't mind these high velocity lottery ticket guys even if winning the lottery means you get a 7th/8th inning guy. I'd be a hypocrite for railing against the bullpen construction and then criticize getting 5 or 6 flame throwers (or at least a few) with visibility to the majors. I just had loftier expectations for fixing the pen and loftier expectations for return on guys like Duda, Reed, and Bruce at least.

I do mind Merandy Gonzanez for AJ Ramos and his likely at least $8M price tag in 2018 that will probably prevent the Mets from signing a different (better) reliever and with all the injuries in the minors Merandy was probably the best healthiest pitcher left.

I will always look at the entire deadline as a whole. If 2-3 of these guys hit out of 6 I will consider it a very successful deadline, especially with how expensive relievers have gotten.

I'll never get caught up in the one for one value of particular players. The plan was clearly to acquire a bunch of upside guys and see if a couple stick.

Several of the bullpen prospects that they acquired for the veterans need to be added to the 40 man to avoid losing them in the upcoming rule 5 draft.
Today's Mets lineup
pjcas18 : 8/20/2017 2:53 pm : link
7 out of 9 Mets draftees/IFA's.

Only Cespedes and TDA not originally drafted or signed by the Mets.

Which of course is meaningless if you're in last place, but good if these guys create some energy, excitement, and momentum (while still losing) heading into 2018.

3 1st round picks in the lineup with Conforto, Smith, and Cecchini), would have been 4 if come on if Nimmo got the start over Lagares.
Figures Stanton
pjcas18 : 8/20/2017 3:05 pm : link
goes off this year. If he could have waited one more year I think he might have been unloaded for cheap (ish).

Now Jeter and co, have a dilemma on their hands, I think his contract is ridiculous, unless of course he does the team a favor and opts out, but how can you ever get fair value back for a guy like Stanton?

they really don't seem to value that position at all. All these trades and they couldn't have gotten one 3B prospect?

I'm not crazy about a platoon at 3B. As much as I love Flores, I'd rather see him at 2nd. Rivera isn't much of a fielder. And, really, I'd just like some stability at 3B...something we haven't gotten in 2 or 3 years.

The Mets are sure acting like relief pitching is their only issue (at least as of this trading deadline/waivers).

Patchwork 2018 (Mark Reynolds on a 1-year deal? Fat Panda on a 1-year deal?), Machado in 2019.

The Mets were not going to get a legitimate 3B prospect for any of the players that they traded away especially in this market. After catcher 3B is the next thinnest position around baseball in terms of prospects.

Collins wants Conforto to finish stron g
spike : 8/20/2017 4:45 pm : link
"
With Curtis Granderson out of the Mets' clubhouse, Michael Conforto has emerged as the new voice of leadership, per NY Daily News' Daniel Popper.

Though this is only his third season in the majors, Conforto is now one of the more experienced Mets in the locker room. Granderson joined Lucas Duda, Neil Walker, and Jay Bruce as veteran to be sent off to contenders this year.

However, manager Terry Collins believes Conforto should just focus on finishing out his season strong instead of worrying about leading at the moment.

"I think Michael really needs to focus on just finishing the year strong," Collins said. "There's enough going on right now with him that he needs to go just play. We'll worry about the leadership at another time. But he's got to show up and go do his thing and finish strong."

"I think ultimately down the road, in the big picture, he will be a huge force in the clubhouse. But he's got enough going on to finish the last two months the way he's came into the last two months, and that is playing well, swinging the bat well and finishing with great numbers. And then we'll worry about all the other outside, off-the-diamond kind of stuff later on."

Conforto has already been leading by example on the field, and Collins views that as enough for right now. Collins has already spoke to Conforto about leadership, and he understood the message loud and clear. "

Well really only Callahan and Rhame fit this mold. Bautista was having a rough go of it in A ball, Sox almost certainly could have kept him around/gambled with losing him. Now that he's pitching well in A+ the Mets will certainly add him. Smith, Nogosek, Ryan are not Rule 5 eligible. Rhame perfect inning yesterday in his debut.

Unless they get Machado after next year. So stop gap IMO is only ok if they have a LT plan for 2019.

And like I said yesterday, if Machado is just not a move the Mets will consider (likely a no-go if Sandy is still in charge) then I'd pursue Moose this year, on a 4 year 75-80M deal.

Something like that.

think Vientos a whole lot but kid is 17 years old and if we are beyond lucky we will see him in 4-5 years so if/when I neglect to mention him just know it's not a knock. Gimenez may have the chops for 3b but I think it would be a waste of his glove and I don't think his bat would be all that special at 3b. I doubt they move him off SS anytime soon anyway.

Shouldn't Gimenez be moving off SS soon though anyway because of Rosario, unless they plan on trading Gimenez, where as a SS he probably has more value.

You "never" see pure SS's in A ball pulled off the position. Gimenez will remain at SS as long as they can possibly keep him there in large part due to trade value. Gimenez is a sum of parts type as it is. His value would be greatly diminished at say 3b. Even at 2b, it's a far less valuable defensive position. No knock on the kid AT ALL but he's slugging .359 14/22 SB's, you put him at 3b and he's suddenly not a very interesting prospect. Obviously the MAJOR caveat is he's 18 and things change. Just to be clear he's my #1 prospect in the system, not knocking him at all.

What does Jeter do? And will Jeter have any influence?

With an ownership change I feel like they have the leeway to dump Stanton as the other owners mistake or they can keep him as the other owners mistake.

Could really go either way IMO.

Good question and they are already framing it as Jeter's first major decision. No idea if he's actually the one making that call.

I'm just saying it's realistic for Gimenez to be in AA at some point next year, from there the majors becomes reality/projectible

Like with Rosario (who was admittedly a couple years older) it might make sense next year to start getting Gimenez a start at 2B or 3B once per week, something like that.

It's unlikely he breaks in with the Mets at SS. I can see keeping him where his natural position is until he gets to higher levels, but AA makes sense to me.

19/20 years old in A+/AA is probably when Flores moved. Now, I'm not comparing Flores and Gimenez glove, but just saying best case is Gimenez is not a SS with the Mets.

general feeling is a good defensive SS can move over to 2b without much effort. As I noted his bat likely doesn't play at 3b. Maybe it develops more than expected but he's not the freak tools type Rosario is. He's likely a slow burn type. Think a better early career Ruben Tejada type. Martin Prado etc.

Hit: 55 | Power: 35 | Run: 60 | Arm: 60 | Field: 55 | Overall: 50
When teams acquire young international talent, as the Mets did by giving Gimenez $1.2 million to sign in July 2015, it often comes with the understanding that while the raw tools might be plentiful, it might take time for them to be refined and the player to mature. When a teenager shows tremendous skills and beyond-his-years maturity, that's when an organization thinks it might have someone special. And that's how the Mets feel about Gimenez.

During his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League, the Venezuelan shortstop finished second in batting average and third in OPS, and the Mets feel the numbers are legit. That's largely because of his advanced approach, one that saw him walk twice as often as he struck out in 2016. The left-handed hitter has plus bat speed with the chance to be a 60 hitter when all is said and done. While he's never going to have a ton of power, he's not a slap hitter, either. Gimenez is definitely a shortstop long-term, using his above-average athleticism and speed well in the field as well as on the basepaths.

While Gimenez might not be the pure tool package that Amed Rosario is, he has the chance to be a really good up-the-middle player. Because of his off-the-charts makeup, the Mets felt comfortable pushing him and he had a solid United States debut in the full-season South Atlantic League in 2017 at age 18.

(Gimenez "best case" is an all-star at 2b for the Mets or a trade chip in a major trade).
I'd say perfect case scenario
Shecky : 8/21/2017 10:47 am : link
Is Gimenez rockets through the system and pushes Rosario to 3rd in two years. That's if all the stars align.

3B being empty prospect wise is mostly true. System has Thompson and Tiberi in the system, who again if everything somehow broke perfectly (which it's all broke worst case scenario for both so far) is one kinda enters the Murphy/Legares level of prospect. Overlooked, nothing more than a backup role expected. But turn into a serviceable starter for a period of time until an upgrade is found. Both are also in that two years away window, Thompson could miraculously be ready in a year. Both unlikely.

The only thing going for e club iwith s 3B is full of retreads around baseball. my assumption would be they will ignore 3B the way the Bp has been ignored and hope they build strengths elsewhere and hope they catch lightening in a bottle to fill the position for a coup,e years. Just a guess.

Agreed all around. I'm not saying Tiberi/Thompson have NO shot at starting MLB games at 3b, rather there is noone you can confidently say "at worst" is a big leaguer at 3b. Thompson/Tiberi both are potential big leaguers if things break right but "unlikely" starting MLB 3b.

I said, I'm very high on Vientos. I think he has the highest upside of any current minor leaguer. Gimenez is "safer" and will be the #1 prospect on almost every list when the season opens but Vientos could be a pretty special offensive player if all breaks right. When I speak of not having 3b prospects I'm talking about someone who is there within the next 2-3 seasons.

I was just posting related to your Vientos comments, and sharing the tweet without commentary.

When are the GCL league games that he already homered in the 4th inning on a Monday?

Are they not spectator games really?

GCL has 10 am, 12 pm starts. They play in the same ballpark as the FSL teams so they need to play earlier games. Tickets are free (or least were previously)
I think they get a CF this offseason, make due at 3rd until next year

the more I've read around, the more it seems like either Cain or Dyson would be targets they could have interest in. Both would upgrade the defense, add speed, and hopefully give another option for the top of the lineup. Dyson would obviously be more of a thrifty short term move, possibly platooning with Lagares, Cain probably more likely takes a Dexter Fowler level contract. If they go the trade route maybe they buy low on someone like Pollock (believe he's a FA in 19).

This year there's just not a markedly better 3B option than Cabrera other than Moustakas, who for a lot of reasons just doesn't seem like a fit.
Dyson
DanMetroMan : 8/21/2017 11:47 am : link
should be very interesting. Quietly a good/very good player who is already 33. Ideally you'd get him for 2 years but usually FA ends up giving a player 1 more year than you'd like.
here's a random trade proposal
Eric on Li : 8/21/2017 11:58 am : link
AJ Pollock
for
TDA and 1 of Lagares/Gsellman

TDA and Pollock are both 1 year from FA having down years and injury prone. Pollock's upside is obviously way way higher, so Mets would likely need to add. A potential back end starter like Gsellman could be enough or if they want a CF option Lagares could make sense.
GCL games are a MUST for the truest diehard fans
Shecky : 8/21/2017 12:03 pm : link
Everyone talks about spring training being a bucket list item for die hard fans. As much as I agree that's true, there is no experience that can beat a GCL game for the truest die hardship like many here. I'll paint the picture.

There's a charter bus. Under it will be some coolers, with black marker written saying "minor league kitchen"
No fans. The only fans you will see there are the players who don't fit into the dugout. They are huddled wherever they can find shade.
Why? 12pm in the middle of a Florida summer day is no fun.
Bathrooms? Well, it shouldn't be plural. One portapotty for both teams to share.
The field. A really nicely kept, larger version of a little league field. Grass. Dirt. Chain link fence. Small bleachers. That's it.
Who sits on the bleachers? Recent HS draft picks who aren't playing yet. That includes the first rounder...
Foul ball? The least senior player has to go chase it...
So there you are. Feet away from the future of MLB. It is an absolute must for any true hard fan out there.
It's not only literally a step down from a HS game. It's literally a step down crowd wise from a tee ball game at your local little league park lol

Oh, tickets were mentioned. Not necessary. Anyone can walk around, pop up a chair, sit, watch, etc.

The Mets would need to include more than that to get Pollock. Sure he is having a down year for him but he is still young enough to turn it around.
