Hypothetical Situation with the Offensive Line...

M.S. : 8/20/2017 8:38 am
...Ereck Flowers goes down (that's not wishful thinking), what's the Giants move:

(1) Slide Justin Pugh over to LT and plug in Adam Gettis (or someone else) at LG?

(2) Leave Pugh at LG and put the next man up at LT (Chad Wheeler), or someone else?

(3) Some other re-arrangement of Giants line, such as...?

Interested in viewpoint of BBIers. Thanks in advance!
Down goes Flowers! ...Down goes Flowers!

I think
RetroJint : 8/20/2017 8:55 am : link
they would try the backup & leave Pugh where he is . Theory being don't disrupt 2 positions . Leave the G-C-G triangle in place. So many pressures come up the middle now. Plus the opponent's DC will anticipate that the Giants will favor helping Flowers. If he's out even more so. It is easier to give help on the edge than inside .

Then if that guy blows up ( Wheeler-whoever), Pugh moves out . They worry about these scenarios all the time . As far as judging the depth players from pre-season games alone, pretty much everybody in the league is in the same boat. Because of lack of reps and continuity , the second units usually look like shit and the threes look like longshoreman and warehouse workers.
Unless Wheeler improves
section125 : 8/20/2017 9:05 am : link
dramatically, he is likely not on the final 53, but to PS if passing waivers.

Pugh goes to LT. Jones or Gettis or Fluker to LG.

IMHO
Reese would make a lot of panic phone calls

The only position other than QB where they don't have some backup protection.
I seriously doubt that they are going
Gman11 : 8/20/2017 10:28 am : link
to plug in a UDFA as his replacement, especially one that did not impress in his preseason game. They'll probably move Pugh there are fill in for Pugh with Gettis, Jones or somebody.
Don't know what they would do but I would be interesting in seeing

Which is the same story around the league. You think Seattle has a LT that was just sitting on the bench waiting for their chance?
right now - if you asked me who I'd rather have on the roster
gidiefor : Mod : 8/20/2017 11:14 am : link
Fluker or Wheeler -- I'd do a lot of hemming and hawing -- Fluker is a very, very limited bull-like one year rental -- he does have forward power, limited intelligence to diagnose and react; he does not have any real upside to him -- while Wheeler has some growing to do with real upside potential, and is definitely a good Left tackle prospect -- he is much more natural at it than Flowers and has excellent balance and footwork.

personally, I'd rather see Wheeler make it
I don't think Wheeler is an option
grizz299 : 8/20/2017 11:39 am : link
In a year where OT's were scarcer than a Giant running game, Wheeler was
undrafted. OLT is a positon so nuanced and demanding that all pros like Smith and Orlando Pace spent their first year at guard or ORT.
This kid may never be ready, but he's sure not ready now.
Not an option.
Wheeler
PaulN : 8/20/2017 11:56 am : link
LOL, he will never be the left tackle this season no matter what happens. I think they would add a player, but then would need to figure out the best OLine the team could put out and it is very possible that Pugh would be the man, in my opinion he should be right now, they have wasted 2 years, Pugh should be the left tackle and Flowers the right guard, why they never did this is puzzling to me, other then to keep Reese happy. Pugh would be an immediate upgrade to Flowers, don't know if Flowers could play right guard though, but I think he would have a better chance to be successful there.
If Flowers goes down for an extended period
Sy'56 : 8/20/2017 1:23 pm : link
Pugh has to be the guy that fills in.

I like Wheeler and his long term potential if he puts his best foot forward...but I can't imagine he will be ready this year. But lets see how he responds in these next 3 preseason games...because week 1 for him was very rough
Simplest explanation is sometime the best

Giants have had Pugh in the organization for 4+ years.

Could it be, that contrary to the experts at BBI, that they just do not see a solid, NFL LT there?
Better hope this starting five,
Doomster : 8/20/2017 3:08 pm : link
as average as it is, stays healthy....
Our starting give, imperfect an all, MUST stay healthy
SGMen : 8/20/2017 5:13 pm : link
If Hart went down, you could shuffle Petitgout to RT (yes); Fluker to RG; and Jerry to LG possibly. Yes, you'd be moving 3 players BUT you'd be moving them to their best positions (IMHO...).

Look, we lose two starters this year we are screwed. Jerry is the least valuable due to depth. Pugh next in the sense that Fluker can at least start RG and Jerry LG admirably, a bit below average but serviceable veterans.
I think this scenario is the main reason Adam Gettis is still a Giant.
Big Blue Blogger : 8/20/2017 5:14 pm : link
Pugh --> LT. Gettis --> LG.

By all accounts, Gettis has acquitted himself well this summer, and left guard is his natural position.

I guess you could move Jerry to LG, but there isn't much reason to believe Jerry+Fluker > Gettis+Jerry, and that option disrupts three positions for little clear benefit.
draft a guard in round 1 and a center in round 2

If Flowers goes down
Jay on the Island : 8/20/2017 5:39 pm : link
Pugh will move to LT with either Fluker, Jones/Gettis moving to LG. I am a big fan of Wheeler's but he will not be strong enough to contribute this year. He needs a season to get stronger and improve his technique. Bisnowaty is even further behind in terms of strength and technique so he isn't much of an option early either.
I thought we had amazing depth

Orlando Pace never played guard or RT to start; he began his career right at LT. Why do you continue to just make stuff up when the information is readily available to you (and anyone else)?

Tell us all again about being incompetent.

One or two injuries on the O-line for an extended period
of time and were toast . Brutal schedule the wins are not
going to come easy and we need to win the division .
Neither Wheeler..
FatMan in Charlotte : 8/21/2017 1:50 pm : link
nor Bisnawaty look like they are anywhere close to contributing this year.

They will make the roster (if they do) based on future potential, but we shouldn't expect them to take snaps and if they do, we should expect the results to be bad.

xman : 8/21/2017 3:08 pm : link
he is said to be a good pass blocker but horrible run blocker; so why can't we try him at tackle? Or is he said to be a good pass blocker relative to his atrocious run blocking?
