With apologies to superspynyg, I thought I'd start the Yankees thread today.
Great win last night, I feel asleep watching Band of Brothers for the 45th time and woke up the bases loaded in the 8th. Wheesh. By the time I got mlb.tv to boot up, Robertson got the K.
Good god does Sanchez have an arm. Nailing Holt after the WP was basically end of the game. Funny I read it was only 86 mph. Think it was mentioned in RAB. I think Coney thought 95+. Whatever - dead nuts perfect placement - knee high just in front of the baseline to Didi. Holt basically slide into the tag. Surprised Farrell didn't at least try a review.
What to do with Tyler Austin?
If Bird comes back he is the starting 1B. Do you think Joe goes Austin vs lefties and Bird vs righties?
Same platoon with Headley and Frazier? I don't think they have enough room. Wade goes back after Castro is done with rehab.

Total 26?? Who goes?
**- Holliday odd man out ?
CC on extra rest is better, despite his protests.
I like rotating Betances, Robbie and maybe Chapman. I think Chapman's problem is 80% mental 20% mechanical. Think he is not used to people making solid contact with 100+, but because the average Joe pitcher hits 98+, that heat is not so outlandish. He will have to elevate the heater more and get better command of his slider/BB. It may not be this season. Something he will need to work on over winter (maybe get a change up too).
Sanchez still needs to work on blocking balls in the dirt. He improved dramatically after he was "benched" after working with Pena. Just needs a touch more refinement. He looks quicker and more solid, but Coney said he needs to anticipate a little more on sliders that the ball will be in the dirt. Perhaps set up more to the break side???IDK
Disagree with Joe on Judge Batting 3rd at this time. He is a black hole and costing runs each game. Move him to 5 or 6 until he starts hitting.

They are not releasing Todd Frazier. Come on now. They would send Austin down until September 1
Why come on now? Frazier sucks and is not in their future plans. If Bird is healthy and playing well, Headly can move back to 3B or Torreyes can with Castro back at 2B. Headley and Austin can then both backup 1B (or platoon) and 3B is covered.
Well first of all, the Yankees obviously don't think Frazier sucks half as much as you do. And secondly, again, rosters expand in a couple of weeks. You honestly think they are going to release their starting 3rd baseman when they don't have to? There is no numbers crunch here. Besides that, yesterday there was an entire thread dedicated to shitting all over Austin after he was called up. Now, after one good game, he's good enough to release the starting 3rd baseman? Jeezus
Yes most of us realize that Sept 1st is looming and frankly that will aid the Yankees immensely having Clint Frazier, Austin, and Holliday as pinch bats and will also allow Judge to get a break more often.
Castro cannot be brought back too quickly this time. Cannot let that hammy go south again. Torreyes has been great filling in and is not a hole in the batting lineup, but Castro is legitimate power.

Getting frustrating now.
Stop it. People clamor for the team to go with young players and then have no patience when they inevitably struggle
WTF?
I hope that's not the case and he gets hot again or at at least half as hot because the kid is a terrific athlete and I love him but more then one person has started to wonder If he is the next Kevin Maas. I certainly hope not but it sure doesn't look good right now.

Remember that the rosters expand on September 1, so the Yanks could carry 40 guys on September 1 if they want.
Castro and Bird should both be in NY no later than the end of the way- probably sooner than that.
However, Holliday is still down rehabing in High A Tampa, which is usually an indicator that the team intends to bring him back more slowly. It might not be 11 days more slowly, but if the rehab stint lasts to next week, expect the activation to be delayed to next Friday (September 1).
Don't overthink things- sometimes the calendar allows you to do things without any other actions on your part.
Nobody is overthinking. It is more with an eye on a 25 man post season roster.
If that is the case, then people are overthinking it even more than I thought.
Teams DO NOT carry 5 man post-season rotations. Max 4 guys, maybe 3 depending how the schedule falls out.
The Yanks likely SP:
Severino
Gray
Tanaka
(if needed) CC
Remember that other SP then get bumped to the pen, but because you essentially get a free "long man" from the SP, that requires one less spot in the pen. Likely to carry a pen of:
Chapman
Betances
DRob
Kahnle
Warren
Garcia
Green
Starters, assuming everyone comes in healthy (this isn't a batting order, it is just the regulars starting with C and going through RF, then DH)
Sanchez
Bird
Castro
Didi
Frazier
Gardner
Hicks
Judge
Headley (DH)
The likeliest bench:
Holliday
Romine
Austin
Torreyes
That's 24- the final spot would likely depend on the opponent. Notice there is no Montgomery on the list above. He will be the most likely dropped to carry Garcia and CC into the post-season, not due to performance, but because his innings cap is rapidly approaching.
Assuming the Yanks are the Wild Card, and win the Wild Card game, they would go play Houston. That probably requires an extra bullpen arm. Likely a guy like Shreve.
If the Yanks win the division, the likely opponent would be Cleveland. In that case, since their pen is a strength, you might want an extra position player to PH/PR late in the game. Maybe Ellsbury.
Whether you like it or not, Ellsbury is gonna be on the postseason roster unless he gets injured.

True, to a point. But the team is not allowing for him to adjust/get better by moving him down in the order. In the meantime, it is hurting the team. And it is hurting him by putting pressure on him each time he is up with RISP.

Now you're stalking me? Lololololol. I love that I've made you my little bitch. Coming to a Yankee thread? Haha, you have no idea how embarrassed I am for you. Absolutely pathetic display. Cringe worthy. Kudos! Now come shine my shoes.

Because they rarely do well against offspeed/junk ball pitchers.
Why is anyone surprised?
Judge looks complete lost against him though.
Judge looks complete lost against him though.
We know these type guys and Porcello today look like they should be crushing it. Hicks keeps swinging like it is a FB and swinging over the change or slider - WTF. Think he might have figured it out by now.
Judge is just freaking lost.
Is it another attempt to pretend they are blue collar and lovable?
And the difference between the sox and yanks stu is the sox have a little more experience .... and Chris sale and rick porcello. Also Kimbrel has been a more consistent reliever than chapman or betances (he will blow this now that I said that)
There's very little difference in the Sox and Yankees this season. Nearly identical run differentials (Yankees is actually a bit better). Sox have been better closing out games in the 9th, as mentioned, which plays a big role.
It is frustrating to see them go so quietly so far today. Like it's a Sunday in April.
He needs to get this monkey off his back.
Kahnle again refusing to use his FB...
Kahnle and Chapman are messed up.
What's the temp up there?
The offense has been comeplete garbage for over two months now .

Have a couple beers and enjoy the rest of my afternoon. What a shit show from this offense today.

High 70s. It's beautiful today. Like picture perfect.
They put up the graphic...Austin was hitting something like .538 against the Sawks.
As far as Ellsbury making the postseason roster, I think he is a slam dunk to makr it and anybody who says it should have been otherwise is just wring. Still a very good CF, Excellent base running ability, not a horrendous PH option. Postseason experience.
Look, we're spenfing the money anyways, I would rather have him off the bench than most of the other options.
“Fastballs get hit,” Rothschild said. “It’s amazing to me to see guys throwing in the upper 90s and they get hit. I don’t know how these guys do it. That’s how good major league hitters are. They have adjusted to velocity. To hit upper 90s, you have to gear up for upper 90s. So hitters are going up there to gear up for velocity. And when they do that, they can hit it no matter how hard you throw.
“The other thing is fastball command. If you don’t have great command with your fastball, these hitters are so good they’re going to hit it. Not every pitcher has great fastball command.”
The Yankees are leading a change in baseball by abandoning a principle of pitching - ( New Window )
