NFT: Sunday Yankees Discussion Thread

section125 : 8/20/2017 9:02 am
With apologies to superspynyg, I thought I'd start the Yankees thread today.

Great win last night, I feel asleep watching Band of Brothers for the 45th time and woke up the bases loaded in the 8th. Wheesh. By the time I got mlb.tv to boot up, Robertson got the K.

Good god does Sanchez have an arm. Nailing Holt after the WP was basically end of the game. Funny I read it was only 86 mph. Think it was mentioned in RAB. I think Coney thought 95+. Whatever - dead nuts perfect placement - knee high just in front of the baseline to Didi. Holt basically slide into the tag. Surprised Farrell didn't at least try a review.

What to do with Tyler Austin?

If Bird comes back he is the starting 1B. Do you think Joe goes Austin vs lefties and Bird vs righties?
Same platoon with Headley and Frazier? I don't think they have enough room. Wade goes back after Castro is done with rehab.

OF:
Judge
Gardner
Hicks
Ells
(4)

IF:
Headley
Frazier
Didi
Torreyes
Castro
Austin
Bird
(7)

Catcher:
Sanchez
Romine
(2)

SP:
Tanaka
Severino
Gray
CC
Garcia
(5)

RP:
Warren
Kahnle
Green
Betances
Robertson
Chapman
Shreve
Mitchell
(8)

Total 26?? Who goes?

**- Holliday odd man out ?

CC on extra rest is better, despite his protests.

I like rotating Betances, Robbie and maybe Chapman. I think Chapman's problem is 80% mental 20% mechanical. Think he is not used to people making solid contact with 100+, but because the average Joe pitcher hits 98+, that heat is not so outlandish. He will have to elevate the heater more and get better command of his slider/BB. It may not be this season. Something he will need to work on over winter (maybe get a change up too).

Sanchez still needs to work on blocking balls in the dirt. He improved dramatically after he was "benched" after working with Pena. Just needs a touch more refinement. He looks quicker and more solid, but Coney said he needs to anticipate a little more on sliders that the ball will be in the dirt. Perhaps set up more to the break side???IDK

Disagree with Joe on Judge Batting 3rd at this time. He is a black hole and costing runs each game. Move him to 5 or 6 until he starts hitting.
Gardner(Ells)
Hicks
Didi
Sanchez
Judge
Headley
Austin
Frazier
Torreyes

When Castro is back:
Gardner(Ells)
Hicks
Didi
Sanchez
Judge
Bird/Castro
Castro/Bird
Frazier/Headley
Austin/(One of Headley/Frazier/Bird)

Anyway some random thoughts.

Didi is the best hitter on this team
Justlurking : 8/20/2017 9:13 am : link
he has to hit 3rd. Judge should be dropped to 5th or 6th. Not sure why Girardi is so fucking ridiculous with his rigidness.

I imagine Austin draws the short straw but he shouldn't. He murders lefties.
also bet Judge gets today off
Justlurking : 8/20/2017 9:16 am : link
unless Gardner does.

Gardner
Hicks
Didi
YoSoyGary
Headley
Frazier
Ellsbury

Torreyes

I doubt either Judge or Gardner sit. Joe will want his best against the Sox. Ells starting over Gardner makes more sense if someone needs a rest. They need this game.

Definitely agree with Didi batting 3rd..The guy always gives a professional at bat and gets big hit after big hit.

Agree on Didi. I would even consider Judge hitting 2nd (although Hicks is flourishing there). I just think the 2 hole might force Judge to approach ABs differently. But, ultimately, I think Gardner, Hicks, Didi, Sanchez, Judge should be the everyday 1-5.

I think either Austin gets sent down

Even Austin he doesn't pan out, they have so many young bats to choose from. The only drawback is it may require moving a guy to the 40 man roster earlier than wanted to carry him. But, at this point, with the success they have been having, I think they need to keep bringing up the kids.

That's why I didn't love getting Frazier and I would like to see him released.
Was looking at it last night
Stu11 : 8/20/2017 10:38 am : link
Today's game is huge. If we manage to leave Boston down 3 after all the injuries, blown leads and dealing with the horseshoe Boston has had lodged in their ass for weeks now, we really would be right in the thick of this for the division. The schedule is very favorable for us going forward. After we finish the Tigers series we will have played 12 more road games than home. Bird had 2 more hits last night including a double and Castro's return is right around the corner. the team is almost completely whole again and ready for the stretch drive. Today is huge though.Leaving Boston down 5 would be tough to make up.

That is a possibility on Holliday, but I doubt it unless he doesn't start hitting in A ball. Can't see Cash and Joe giving up on Holliday, especially at $13 mill. Next year for certain because Clint will be back.

The list I have above has 26, so to me the odd man out is Austin, unless they decide to drop one of the RPs to SWB.
People are overthinking this
rich in DC : 8/20/2017 10:53 am : link
Remember that the rosters expand on September 1, so the Yanks could carry 40 guys on September 1 if they want.

Castro and Bird should both be in NY no later than the end of the way- probably sooner than that.

However, Holliday is still down rehabing in High A Tampa, which is usually an indicator that the team intends to bring him back more slowly. It might not be 11 days more slowly, but if the rehab stint lasts to next week, expect the activation to be delayed to next Friday (September 1).

Don't overthink things- sometimes the calendar allows you to do things without any other actions on your part.

Nobody is overthinking. It is more with an eye on a 25 man post season roster.
Last week it looked like Judge may have been starting to adjust
Matt M. : 8/20/2017 11:05 am : link
with some opposite field hits. But, this weekend he has again been pulling off the ball with nearly every swing. The K last night was an outside fastball that he was trying to deposit over the monster. If you are going to swing at a high fastball that is also off the outside part of the plate, you should at least be looking to take it the other way.

Austin goes for sure. Holiday's leadership in the playoffs could be huge for these rookies. He has won a few WS with the Cards.

If that is the case, then people are overthinking it even more than I thought.

Teams DO NOT carry 5 man post-season rotations. Max 4 guys, maybe 3 depending how the schedule falls out.

The Yanks likely SP:
Severino
Gray
Tanaka
(if needed) CC

Remember that other SP then get bumped to the pen, but because you essentially get a free "long man" from the SP, that requires one less spot in the pen. Likely to carry a pen of:

Chapman
Betances
DRob
Kahnle
Warren
Garcia
Green

Starters, assuming everyone comes in healthy (this isn't a batting order, it is just the regulars starting with C and going through RF, then DH)

Sanchez
Bird
Castro
Didi
Frazier
Gardner
Hicks
Judge
Headley (DH)

The likeliest bench:

Holliday
Romine
Austin
Torreyes

That's 24- the final spot would likely depend on the opponent. Notice there is no Montgomery on the list above. He will be the most likely dropped to carry Garcia and CC into the post-season, not due to performance, but because his innings cap is rapidly approaching.

Assuming the Yanks are the Wild Card, and win the Wild Card game, they would go play Houston. That probably requires an extra bullpen arm. Likely a guy like Shreve.

If the Yanks win the division, the likely opponent would be Cleveland. In that case, since their pen is a strength, you might want an extra position player to PH/PR late in the game. Maybe Ellsbury.

Why come on now? Frazier sucks and is not in their future plans. If Bird is healthy and playing well, Headly can move back to 3B or Torreyes can with Castro back at 2B. Headley and Austin can then both backup 1B (or platoon) and 3B is covered.

Well first of all, the Yankees obviously don't think Frazier sucks half as much as you do. And secondly, again, rosters expand in a couple of weeks. You honestly think they are going to release their starting 3rd baseman when they don't have to? There is no numbers crunch here. Besides that, yesterday there was an entire thread dedicated to shitting all over Austin after he was called up. Now, after one good game, he's good enough to release the starting 3rd baseman? Jeezus
Austin
PaulN : 8/20/2017 11:50 am : link
Goes down until 9/1, simple. This will be the last season the yanks keep a DH, they need to carry Ellsbury, he will essentially be the 5th outfielder, next season Frazier will be in left with Gardner, unless they trade Gardy, then no need for the DH, besides, it makes it much easier to rest the players in the DH hole at times, plus they will save the DH salary. Todd Frazier just hit homers in back to back games against the Red Sox, he is a great defensive player, he is going nowhere, if he gets hot he will make a lot of you feel foolish you ever thought it, and he is due, just like Sanchez was due.
Frazier is a better 3rd baseman than
section125 : 8/20/2017 12:02 pm : link
Headley and he is starting to hit some - 2 hrs in two games against the Sox. Big power in the 8th spot is nice. It would be real nice to have rotational 1st and 3rd baseman vs lefties and righties, but a luxury on a 25 man roster.

Yes most of us realize that Sept 1st is looming and frankly that will aid the Yankees immensely having Clint Frazier, Austin, and Holliday as pinch bats and will also allow Judge to get a break more often.

Castro cannot be brought back too quickly this time. Cannot let that hammy go south again. Torreyes has been great filling in and is not a hole in the batting lineup, but Castro is legitimate power.

True, to a point. But the team is not allowing for him to adjust/get better by moving him down in the order. In the meantime, it is hurting the team. And it is hurting him by putting pressure on him each time he is up with RISP.

This clutch hitting thing is such a myth. It comes and goes. Right now it's a bad stretch but it tends to even out.

There's very little difference in the Sox and Yankees this season. Nearly identical run differentials (Yankees is actually a bit better). Sox have been better closing out games in the 9th, as mentioned, which plays a big role.

It is frustrating to see them go so quietly so far today. Like it's a Sunday in April.

What's the temp up there?
Who is talking about situational hitting
RetroJint : 8/20/2017 5:25 pm : link
when you get 3 hits total? Also Kimbrel is elevating his fastball, which means it is hopping, because he is healthy . And Chapman is not . Another no show by the New York White Sox and Gray broke first again. Not an ace-like performance . A big part of this game remains getting on the board first . Gray broke early . It's time to root for first wild card .

so why put him in the lineup today

They put up the graphic...Austin was hitting something like .538 against the Sawks.

As far as Ellsbury making the postseason roster, I think he is a slam dunk to makr it and anybody who says it should have been otherwise is just wring. Still a very good CF, Excellent base running ability, not a horrendous PH option. Postseason experience.

Look, we're spenfing the money anyways, I would rather have him off the bench than most of the other options.
I'm not sure if this comes from Cashman

or it's a Rothschild thing. But here's why the Yankees keep throwing change ups.

Quote:
I asked New York's pitching guru, coach Larry Rothschild, to explain this new world of pitching.

“Fastballs get hit,” Rothschild said. “It’s amazing to me to see guys throwing in the upper 90s and they get hit. I don’t know how these guys do it. That’s how good major league hitters are. They have adjusted to velocity. To hit upper 90s, you have to gear up for upper 90s. So hitters are going up there to gear up for velocity. And when they do that, they can hit it no matter how hard you throw.

“The other thing is fastball command. If you don’t have great command with your fastball, these hitters are so good they’re going to hit it. Not every pitcher has great fastball command.”

The Yankees are leading a change in baseball by abandoning a principle of pitching - ( New Window )
Austin hits lefties
xman : 8/20/2017 10:55 pm : link
his 538 is a small sample size like 8 for 15. How many of those hits were vs lefties I can't say but Joes hunch didn't pay dividends today. Wrong guy for the game. Should have gone with Els
